ISSUE MONTHLY JOURNAL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TechTalk 01 January 2010 this issue HDMI™ 1.3 or 1.4 HDMI™ Comparisons Compare the New HDMI™ Cable Revision The past two HDMI™ revisions changes are: HDMI™ 1.3: Deep Color From 8 bit to 48 bit or more. Auto Lip Sync Realign audio to be in sync with video – like former professional video recording. Dolby ® TrueHD and DTS ® HD capability HDMI™ 1.4: Ethernet Channel Gateway for internet access to your TV. Audio Return Channel Select HDMI™ input on your TV; now digital audio is available to your compatible external A/V controller or AV receiver without switching. 3D Over HDMI™ Currently there are no existing 3D stereoscopic standards for TV displays, nor displays or content have been developed for this standard. Future development is needed for such a standard to emerge; even so, will the industry embrace this 3D as a standard? 4KX2K/24 display format Four times the resolution compared to standard 1080P, but presently used ONLY for DVI and Data Port professional productions. HDMI™ 1.3 or 1.4? What is the true call? HDMI™ LLC. Association will soon announce mandatory labeling for all HDMI Rev 1.4 cable products, to go into effect ASAP. The recent announcement of HDMI™ Rev 1.4 has resulted in many firms reacting with their own creative labeling. Although the HDMI™ 1.4 non Ethernet cable is essentially the same as 1.3, all Rev 1.4 approved products will require the correct labeling. You cannot just label an HDMI™ product as Rev 1.4; it must follow HDMI's standards nomenclature. The supplier has this and should implement it when ordering HDMI™ Rev 1.4 products. If any Rev 1.4 products are ordered, they must make sure that the correct nomenclature is printed on the cable and the package. If you think your supplier may not have this information, please review these details with them. Other than that, HDMI 1.4 cables are fully compatible with HDMI 1.3 installations (minus the Ethernet capability). The Ethernet addition has no influence on the cable or the interface Myth: Many people have been erroneously told that HDMI™ 1.4 bandwidth was increased. Fact: BOTH Rev 1.3 and Rev 1.4 have bandwidth of 3.4 Gbps. Both 1.3 and 1.4 are extremely adaptable and intelligent systems. But it will take a while for the industry to adapt to 1.4’s many new capabilities. Most products in the market today are NOT compatible or cannot make use of them; therefore, our customers will benefit from using the 1.3 in nearly every case, for now. The past revisions have brought us much greater capability, such as higher resolution and much greater color depth for more accurate high-definition pictures. The latest revisions offer powerful new capabilities such as Ethernet and audio return, which reduce cable clutter and open new dimensions to simplified installations. http://www.ecdcom.com 4747 Westpark Houston, Texas 77027 281.605.4395 800.392.5156
