However Swedish recommended themselves from the best side in production of home audio equipment as well. In January 2007 descendants ot Vikings presented their own electronics: CD-player and amplifier – CD One and Amplifier One. Producers, naturally, recommend using this pair in a set with M66 acoustic systems. So what if we try this combination regarding sound? Solid design of the entire stereo system strikes the eye at once. Silver-color front panel of the player with fluorescent screen cut-in in the middle shall be appropriate to be seen in any interior scene (by the way, fashionable black “finish” color is also available). Control buttons for main modes are located to the left from the screen — besides Eject key, which is located to the right from the screen, excludes its erroneous pressing. Two unbalanced and balance outputs as well as digital (optical and coaxial) outputs are located at the rear panel of the player. The player has no tone control unit, for this reason only loudness and inputs changeovers are present on its façade. RCA- and XLR-inputs are located at the rear panel besides connection clamps for acoustic devices. “Vinyl” lovers should have to buy phonocorrector additionally. M66 acoustic systems are made according to so called principle of two and a half band — second full range speaker acts as woofer. Delivery set comprises spikes, which should be better mounted at once, because speakers feel more self-confident during playback of very dense bass. Diffusers of bass/mid-range speakers are made from aluminum; membrane of tweeter from cloth has increased caliber (28 mm against usual 25). Acoustic clamps are extremely comfortable – there are no problems with bringing cable under screw, and if “banana” plug is used — all the more. Vented enclosure is brought to rear panel of the speakers, which supposes their distance from a wall to be at least 0.3–0.5 m. We are entitled to wait from the system built from components of one manufacturer ideal coherence, and in this case this is not an empty expression. In particular, “songfest“ of the player with the amplifier is conditioned, not after all the others, by use of the best elements and technology solutions allowing to achieve proprietary concept titled Super Natural Sound, which is implemented in both electronic devices. The question is about ideology declared by founding fathers of the company: the sound should be comfortable, not causing tiredness. The following fact is well known: live sound is absolutely deprived from non-linear distortions, from which, in fact, discomfort rise depends. So “Super Natural Sound” translated into the technical language may be treated as sound without distortions. Generally, while speaking about stereophonic effect, extremely large meaning of a source should be noted. In this case this is an all-purpose player, which “understands” CD-Audio, DVDAudio and Super Audio CD. Accurate CD-transport and precision DAC from Burr-Brown exactly provide wonderful division of sound information between channels, premium dynamic range and phase stability. Electronics management takes place quite easily “from hand” and with the help of all-purpose IR-remote control R4U, which is delivered in a set with the player and the amplifier. The control device is very comfortable as it was created with strict taking account of ergonomics — the most popular buttons automatically become within reach of the thumb. Apparatuses from the country of Vikings recommended themselves in operation from the best side proved, not revealing brightly expressed musical preferences. And still we would recommend the given system first of all to worshippers of classics and, however paradoxical it may seam, – to addicts of the heavy rock. The fact is that accented bass, which is so frequently met, for example, in jazz compositions, may be not quite exactly transmitted by a full range speaker. Instead, M66 excellently managed with quick energetic bass parties, which are customary for heavy and electronic music. In this view we would like to expostulate for absence
of the tone control unit in Amplifier One — possibility to decrease bass drive here would not be excessive. On the other hand, strive to go along no-compromise way, so as to bring to a listener sound of “the source” is worth to be praised. Perhaps, the system may not be called all-purpose, however, according to our opinion; this is the very case when it is necessary, empirically, to find a reasonable boundary between dimensions of premises for listening, sound level and genre of reproduced music. In fact, it deals about studio approach – one time set “sliders” and forgot about adjustments. We would like to note that DLS Company, as an alternative to impressive floor speakers, propose classical M60 rack-mounted systems – two-band monitors were always attracting attention of experienced melomaniacs. If you have decided to acquire M66 speakers, we advise to practice their thorough “heating”, placement in a room and volume grading.
