THX: Certified superior cinema Star Wars creator George Lucas introduced THX in 1983 as a set of specifications to guarantee uniformly excellent sound across cinemas. The same principle was later applied to home cinemas. No system is awarded THX certification without meeting the strictest standards for the creation of thrilling and highly realistic movie playback. Teufel Audio became the first German company to produce THX certified systems in 1996 and is currently Europe’s leading manufacturer of THX certified home cinema systems. Uncompromising sound An elaborate system of measurements was applied to the system’s 3 identical front speakers in order to fulfil the THX specifications. Flat membrane midrange drivers placed flush along the front minimize phase shifting and distortion. Two dipole speakers with a 3-way driver arrangement are employed as surrounds. The diffuse playback they produce across the entire frequency spectrum approximates the realistic atmosphere professional cinemas use an entire back wall of speakers to create. Each speaker contains two midrange drivers, a tweeter and a woofer for a full spectrum of sound that blends seamlessly over to the subwoofer. The dipoles were also calibrated to harmonize perfectly with the front speakers. Integrated wall mounts facilitate setup and room integration. May the bass be with you Most surround sound systems use a single subwoofer to cover the low end of the frequency spectrum. The System 6 THX, however, isn’t your everyday home cinema set. The system employs two relatively compact subwoofers to produce bass that doesn’t distort, even at high levels, and which reaches every listening position with equal power. The two expertly designed subs have a 25 Hz (-3 dB) low end and play all the way down with precision. A wireless option (available separately) does away with the need to run a cable between the A/V receiver and each subwoofer, making them even easier to place. Colossal sound, subtle design Compared to the ground-shaking, thrilling performance they deliver, the System 6 THX speakers look positively graceful. Each front satellite measures just 31 x 20 x 15 cm; the dipoles with integrated woofers are slightly larger at 31 x 35 x 18 cm, but still quite compact. Delivery includes two grilles per speaker. The fabric covers add an elegant touch whereas the metal grilles offer more protection.
