The Emerging Trend in Monitor Displays, 4:3, 1:1, and 21:9 are the New Aspect Ratios
A 24-inch or 27-inch screen with 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios are the most common form of computer monitors we see around us. However in recent years, computer monitor aspect ratio is undergoing some transformation. This is because the number of people who are using the monitor for various purposes, from playing games and watching movies to video editing and for graphic design, are increasing - and consumer demands for monitors of different aspect ratios with varied widths or lengths are consequently increasing as well. 4:3 Aspect Ratio, From CRT TVs of the Past to Smartphones of Today If we look back into the past when CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs were predominant, 4:3 was the most widely used aspect ratio. However, 4:3 screens that once dominated small and medium sized CRT TVs faced downturn and eventually became discontinued after year 2000. This was due to broadcasters producing HD resolution contents after emergence of digital broadcasting, therefore preference for 16:9 cinematic aspect ratio also increasing.
Once-universal 4:3 aspect ratio is now considered rare, and is newly being applied to DSLR cameras and smartphones. LG Vu 3 which was introduced by LG at the end of last year, is the latest model of so-called ‘Phablet Vu’ series that employed 4:3 aspect ratio, which is
unique in the smartphone market where 16:9 aspect ratio is prevalent. It received positive feedback from users for its relatively shorter lengths and longer widths, which improved text view with ratio optimized for reading documents or e-books along with more convenient web surfing.
1:1 Aspect Ratio, the Perfect Display Choice for Multi-Tasking Another emerging aspect ratio is 1:1. This aspect ratio provides an optimized environment for enjoying contents such as games and videos that are better suited in wide screen, as well as for various tasks including working on documents, graphic design and video editing. 1:1 monitor works on the same principles as attaching a 21.5-inch 16:9 aspect ratio monitor and 20.5-inch 21:9 aspect ratio on top of each other, offering the effect of working on a dual monitor and satisfying consumers with multi-tasking needs. At the Center of the New Aspect Ratios, 21:9 Ultra-Wide Aspect Ratio
In addition to the 1:1 display explained above, LG Display has also introduced a 21:9 wide monitor and is leading the new aspect ratio trend. A 21:9 display is the best display solution to enjoy digital contents. This ratio is equivalent to 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 monitor ratio, the screen format of digital contents in general made by digital contents producers, and allows the user to enjoy movies without the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen that the person would find on a 4:3 or 16:9 monitors.
This means that the excess 5:9 monitor space of the 21:9 screen monitor can be used for additional purposes. The user can enjoy digital contents more comfortably than before, as it becomes possible to play games and search for relevant information on the game at the same time, or check TV listings while watching the TV. Also, since the user can display multiple windows simultaneously, it provides the same effect as installing dual monitors and offers optimized efficiency of multi-tasking. LG Display’s Borderless Technology, the New Standard Aspect Ratio Another reason behind the growing popularity of ultra wide displays with 21:9 aspect ratio is the increasing number of TVs that adopt 21:9 format to accommodate the digital entertainment contents such as blockbuster movies and games. The borderless technology plays an essential role in providing the same level of immersive experience as you would get when watching a movie in a theater.
The main characteristics of LG Display’s 21:9 monitor display is a differentiated borderless technology called “Thin & Narrow”. While the borderless technologies that have so far been introduced by other display manufacturers required the application of a tempered glass layer, which had to set bezel width at 18mm – but LG Display’s patented borderless technology can achieve much narrower bezel width of 10mm.
Another advantage of LG Display’s borderless products that sets it apart from products made by other companies is its exceptional light transmittance made possible by eliminating the need for a tempered glass layer. This enables LG Display to produce excellent image quality at a reduced production cost.
So far, we have learned about the aspect ratios of displays. In response to the types and characteristics of the contents produced and distributed in the market, consumer’s demands will also continue to change. The aspect ratios of monitor displays will go through a series of changes accordingly.
Regardless of how the shape of monitors may change, we envision
the new aspect ratio trending in the display market, as long as LG Display strives to provide the users with the best experience based on our innovative and original display technologies.
