The European Directives 2002/96/EC and 2012/19/EU The European Directive 2002/96/EC and the up-dated Directive 2012/19/EU on Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) aims to minimize the impact on the environment by prevention of waste. The Swelab Alfa, Swelab Alfa Plus, Medonic M-series, Medonic Mseries M32, Exigo and Exigo EOS hematology analyzers are labeled with the WEEE symbol (as given in the margin) and they can be subjected to waste collection and recycling of the equipment at the end of its life cycle provided that the instrument is properly decontaminated. Decontamination should be done by a professional user or service engineer using proper protective measures e.g. gloves, safety goggles and appropriate laboratory clothing. The instrument should be considered as infected and decontamination must be done before handing over to a recycler. Decontamination is done by running the Boule Cleaning Kit according to instructions, including emptying of the system, followed by removal of the liquid tubing system and connected inlets and mixing beakers. All plastic parts should be separated and incinerated whereas parts with metal may be autoclaved. If for whatever reason there are difficulties to follow the procedure contact should be taken with the local distributor.
