Customer Success Story: Irish Dairy Board | October 2010
BUSINESS Exporting Irish dairy produce The Irish Dairy Board is one of Ireland’s biggest exporters, distributing dairy products to countries around the globe. Founded in 1961, the organisation is a commercial co-operative comprising 36 member manufacturers and dairy companies. Its aim is to generate maximum return for Ireland’s dairy producers. The Irish Dairy Board has seven offices throughout Europe and has a distribution arm in the US. The organisation is currently focused on further growth through mergers and acquisitions.
CHALLENGE Ensuring the availability of critical information To prevent disruption to the business and staff activities, the Irish Dairy Board needs to ensure that critical business data is continuously available, particularly important emails, HR and accounting information stored on file servers, and EDI (electronic data interchange) order data. Tim Crowley, Senior Systems Administrator at the Irish Dairy Board, comments, “We need to ensure that all our documents and data are easily accessible at all times – even if they have been archived, accidentally deleted, or corrupted as a result of a hardware failure. For example, if our CEO needs to check an email from six months ago to verify contract terms with a customer, we need to provide rapid and efficient access to the message.” For disaster recovery purposes, the Irish Dairy Board’s production storage attached network (SAN) automatically replicates to a secondary SAN environment, however the organisation also needs a simple and reliable solution for day-to-day tape backup and data restores. “It is not often that we need to restore data from tape, but when we do it is vital that we can do so quickly and with minimal technical resources,” comments Crowley.

Customer Success Story: Irish Dairy Board | October 2010
The organisations had used arcserve Backup for nearly 15 years to facilitate tape backup and restores. As the Irish Dairy Board increasingly adopts server virtualisation, it needs a solution that offers the same ease of use and reliability across its hybrid IT environment.
SOLUTION Simple and reliable backup and recovery After evaluating a number of recovery management solutions, the Irish Dairy Board discovered that the latest version of arcserve Backup r15 was best suited to its needs. As Crowley explains, “Arcserve Backup r15 is designed specially to work in combination with VMware’s latest server virtualisation technology. Plus, it proved to be cost-effective as the modular structure meant we only had to pay for the functionality we needed.” The arcserve solution was implemented in August 2010 by the Irish Dairy Board’s inhouse IT team. “The solution was very straightforward to deploy, and as it offered the same user-friendly interface as the previous versions, so we didn’t need to invest in any training,” adds Crowley. Arcserve Backup is used to protect data across 40 Windows servers at the Irish Dairy Board’s head office, including email, file server, EDI data and business intelligence reporting systems. In total four terabytes of data is backed up to tape every weekend with differential backups running throughout the week. Crowley comments, “Arcserve Backup r15 offers greater performance and faster backup than the previous version, which means we can protect more data within the same backup window.” Backup tapes are transported to an offsite storage facility approximately four miles away, from which data can be restored in around 1.5 hours depending on the age of the required information. The arcserve solution also provides at-a-glance reports to enable the Irish Dairy Board’s IT team to quickly verify backup status and take remediation action if a failure is flagged.

BENEFIT Increasing efficiency and reducing risk Arcserve Backup integrates seamlessly with the Irish Dairy Board’s server infrastructure, which is now 99 percent virtual. Crowley comments, “Arcserve Backup is extremely reliable and requires minimal manual intervention.” By migrating to the latest version of the solution, the Irish Dairy Board has been able to: •
Increase IT efficiency
•
Reduce the risk of data loss
•
Enhance staff productivity.
“Protecting and accessing archived, deleted or corrupted files is now quick and easy, providing us with peace of mind and enabling us to focus our efforts on expanding the business,” concludes Crowley.
