Sizing Flexcon expansion vessels
Static height is the vertical distance from the expansion vessel mid point (lower part of the system) to the highest point of the system above the expansion vessel.
Basic Calculation
Expansion Vessel Efficiency (VE)
Vessel System Water Content x Coefficient of Expansion Vessel Size = Efficiency = Expansion Vessel Efficiency
Max. Pressure – Min. Pressure Max. Pressure
Please note the pressure must be in absolute units (gauge pressure + 1 bar(g)) Maximum pressure = maximum working pressure at the expansion vessel Minimum pressure = expansion vessel gas charges (normally dependent on the system static height) + 0.2 bar(g) 0.7 bar(g) Please note the expansion vessel efficiency must not exceed the maximum stated by Flamco UK Ltd. Sizing charts have taken this into consideration

Maximum expansion vessel sizing (Gas charge 1 bar(g)). Coefficient 4-2 VE = = 0.5 (50%) of expansion = 0.032 4 1000 x 0.032 Expansion vessel size = = 64litres 0.5 (Use the nearest higher size. e.g. Flexcon 80/1).
Heating systems – Flexcon standard expansion vessels. Sizing to BS 7074 Heating and Chilled Water Sealed Systems up to 5 bar(g) Using the following criteria far calculations: Water content = system water content + 10% Coefficient of expansion = use system highest temperature (not mean temp) Maximum pressure = safety valve setting – 10% (e.g. for 3 bar(g) Safety valve maximum pressure = 2.7 bar(g)) Miximum pressure = expansion vessel gas charge + 0.2 bar(g) (0.5 + 0.2 = 0.7 bar(g) minimum) For elevated temperature systems it is necessary to ensure that the water at the highest point in the system does not flash to steam. An anti-Flash margin, usually 11oC, should be added to the flow temperature. The corresponding vapour pressure for this temperature should then be added to the static height of the system. This new minimum pressure must be used for the expansion calculations and will protect the system in accordance with BS 7074 part 2. If in doubt please contact Flamco UK Ltd. for advice.

Flexcon Expansion Vessels Flexcon 6.0 bar(g) For heating and chilled water installations Flexcon diaphragm expansion vessels are made of top-quality steel and come with a high gloss epoxy coating. Together with the clench ring on vessels 2litres - 80litres the design offers a high quality and reliable product. The rolling action of the Flexcon diaphragm provides the vessel with a longer life. For high specification installations consider the Flamco digital upgrade. The upgrade features include: • Max. working pressure: 6.0 bar(g) • Max. vessel temperature (diaphragm): 70ºC. • Max. supply temperature (boiler): 90ºC. • Max. working temperature (design): 120ºC. ote: Control of hot water via Remeha controls and priority kits: N • When using the Remeha controls and priority kits in conjunction with a supplied HWS immersion
sensor, fit the supplied brass pocket in the secondary return connection and connect immersion sensor into pocket. The secondary return connection should then be connected into the cold feed supply at the base of the calorifier between the safety group and the calorifier. Sensor wiring connections can be found in the boiler control wiring details
• The 2 port valve must be wired as detailed in the diagrams above, with the electrical supply coming
from the Priority Kit/Boiler controls. To ensure the correct operation of the Priority Kit set the control thermostat (connected to the 2 port valve) 10ºC higher than the boiler or controller hot water temperature
• Refer to our schematic and wiring booklet 14
