With so much Spring beauty in our surroundings, it is difficult to realize that there are some among us that are dealing with substantial material loss and the emotional pain of having to rebuild due to the recent tornadoes that struck Murfreesboro. I pray that each person affected by the storm be given the support and assistance they need to get back to normalcy as soon as possible. I learned a few days ago that two members of the woodturning community were directly affected. If you are aware of or involved in a clean-up effort for these two families, I would be honored to be included by lending a hand if possible. I am sure that there are a number of our members that would be willing to be of service as well. Please email me or Jeff Brockett with any dates that are set up for serving and we will get the word out to everyone. May 1, 2 & 3, we are going to be involved in demonstrating at the Annual TACA Craft Fair in Nashville at Centennial Park. There was a sign-up sheet at the April meeting and there will be one at the April 25th Turn-In at the Children's Home Wood Shop. If you would like to be a part of this fun, public event, then please be at the turn-in or send an email to Jeff Brockett or me with the day and time you are interested in being involved with manning the booth or interacting with the crowd. On May 5th we will hold our regular meeting and hopefully be able to show off our newest acquisition! I am looking forward to rolling out the new lathe! The new equipment is being purchased and deployed in response to your generosity - that's right - you! By paying your dues, attending the symposium, buying items in our auction and donating your elbow grease and time, we are able to fund these purchases and the scholarships. I am also excited to see our new Jet lathes in the wood shop for our turn-in's! We have a really good set-up and it is available to you to take advantage of, so please come on out and get some sawdust in your pockets with us on the 25th! I am working on something really amazing for the May-June 2010 time frame...I think this is going to help make 2010 a year to remember! I will elaborate a bit at the next meeting! So, plan to be there on May 5th - we may have some chips and dip for you too!
Important dates to remember: Saturday Turn In – April 25 TACA Craft Fair – May 1-3 May Meeting May 5 Saturday Turn-In- May 16

Club Meeting–Tuesday, May 5 John Jordan will demonstrate various methods he uses as surface treatment for his turnings. John is one of the founding members of our association, and has demonstrated here and around the globe at symposiums and events. His turnings are exhibited in both public and private collections, museums and galleries worldwide.
Saturday Turn-In – April 25 The Saturday Turn-In for April has been changed due to a conflict with the TBCH schedule and will be on April 25 at the TBCH workshop from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. All demonstration times except for the time period 4pm to 6pm on Saturday have been taken at the time of this writing, so we can still use a little help. Plans this year are to have three (3) mini-lathes and the grinder at the event. You will need to bring your own tools and wood.

April Demonstrator Mike Zinser introduced Gary Martin as the meeting demonstrator. Gary is a self taught turner and has developed his own style of mistakes. He learned by watching demonstrators, using library materials and asking questions. Gary was awarded a TAW scholarship and spent a week with Gramme Pirtle at Arrowmont. Gramme has developed a style of augmenting his turnings and does shaping and carving on them right off the lathe. Gary showed us how to set up a wood burner using a NAPA model 85-220 battery charger. He also demonstrated how he bleaches his turnings with Klean Strip Wood Bleach.
Barry Werner - Ellsworth inspired natural edge honey locust vase and Persimmon Vase
Monty Richards - carved hollow form and maple burl – will be displayed in state museum

Saturday Turn In March 21 Brian Clarry did a hands on peppermill workshop on March 21. Mike Zinser and Jeff Brockett assisted. Twenty one members attended. We also turned several pens for the troops.
Sawdust Trail April 4 The Sawdust Trail took us to Phil Stoner’s workshop on April 4. Phil showed us his hydraulic lift for getting big pieces of wood up to the band saw and the electric winch that he has mounted over his lathe to assist with getting the wood on the lathe. He has his big compressor and dust collector separated from the main shop and this keeps the noise level down. There were 19 TAW members who visited with Phil.
Turning and coring bowls with a new Stubby lathe. I carried a maple blank to the lathe on a scissor lift. This was one positive idea obtained from visiting Phil Stoner's shop on the Sat sawdust trail. The blank was mounted on the lathe, turned and removed from spindle. I successfully cored two bowls using the NcNaughton system. A third bowl broke when I popped it out and it ended up in my wife's flower garden along with the largest bowl which I decided not to finish. Another idea I got from Phil was to use an electric hoist to carry a heavy blank from the lift to the spindle. I bought both the lift and hoist at Harbor Freight in Antioch on sale. Ken Gaidos
Member’s Project TACA Art Advocacy Day April 14 Mike Zinser, Brian Clarry, Brenda Stein, Brevard Haynes and Jeff Brockett volunteered to demonstrate at Legislative Plaza for the TACA Art Advocacy Day. We had the opportunity to talk to members of the legislature and the public about our craft and the importance of art.
When end sealing bowl blanks, I find that a small touch-up paint roller works much better than a traditional bristle brush or a foam brush. For about $2.00, you can get a 2" foam roller, roller handle and a plastic roller tray. Be sure to wash out the roller and tray with plenty of soap and water when you are finished. Barry Turner

The Tennessee Association of Woodturners is a local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. Our purpose is to provide a meeting place for local turners to share ideas and techniques and to educate the general public regarding the art of turning. The TAW meets the first Tuesday of each month at the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home, off of Franklin Road in Brentwood, TN and periodically sponsors local exhibitions and demonstrations as well as an annual symposium
