A wholly good feeling that can only be increased through the cosiness of a fire. It gives us peaceful light, the tender smell of fresh wood, a soft crackling noise and this unique warmth. Comfort, however, also means carefreeness and safety. The stove regulator is a system consisting of a multifunctional sensor and different kinds of regulator elements that keeps your wood fire under control at all times. A display that is easy to read and can be operated intuitively informs you about all processes. Robust regulator elements scan the fire and control it by supplying and withdrawing air for an optimum combustion. A fire that is controlled in this way can burn almost twice as long. Or in other words, it needs less fuel for producing the same amount of energy. That alone can be a good argument for this unique technology. However, it also reflects an easy way of using wood fire. Seeing grandfather leave the table regularly to take care of the fire is something our children won't experience anymore. The display reliably informs us of the best moment to add more wood, even with an optional acoustic signal. If pleasant warmth immediately reminds you of a wood fire and comfort means easy operation to you, then you can now combine both through the stove regulator. A cosy Sunday IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII 08:15 am Breakfast is ready! There is the smell of fresh buns and the wood you just lit is crackling in the stove. The stove regulator recognises the change through the stove door switch and supplies the fire with all the air it needs to start burning quickly. As soon as a steady combustion is reached, the air supply is changed accordingly. 2 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl 12.03.2008 16:29 Uhr Seite 3 A regulator acts. It has full control over the fire and comfortably converts the energy of the wood into eco-friendly heat. unday IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII 10:00 am 01:00 pm 04:00 pm The children have already gone out into the fresh air. They want to visit the Sunday market today. Quickly put one or two pieces of wood into the fire so that you can return into a cosily heated home at noon. Because you’ve now closed all the windows, the air supply vent opens a bit more. The fire burns optimally. Wonderfully fresh vegetables are simmering in the pot. The extractor hood is turned on full power and competing with the stove for each draught. If a chimney fan is integrated in the system, it now gives the fire the necessary safety. Without a fan the chimney draught can become too weak. In this case the stove regulator would turn off the extractor hood via radio signal to ensure that no smoke enters your home. Friends come over for a coffee! Ever since you got the wood stove, people meet at your place more often. And they frequently ask why the fire burns for so long with so little wood. Everyone of your friends would like to have a stove regulator now, especially Peter and Katja. They stay a bit longer today and you have a cosy autumn evening together, with good conversations and a calmingly crackling fire... 3 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl 12.03.2008 16:29 Uhr Seite 4 UN!VE With the stove regulator air supply and combustion are always in balance. Eco-friendly heating There are different kinds of fire Fire is a demanding energy source. The wood willingly gives away the natural energy that has grown for years. However, outside factors have a considerable effect on combustion quality: To heat a fire up, a lot of combustion air is needed. To keep it burning for as long as possible and increase efficiency at the same time, the air supply has to be adjusted to combustion. Due to the stove regulator the combustion can last almost twice as long and considerably more energy can be created. For this the first wood stoves already had dampers on which people would sometimes burn their fingers during winter. Today these dampers are operated automatically and are always in an optimum position. This leads to a much calmer combustion and through this also to a smaller build-up of soot on the vision panel. Fire not only needs air, but also the right amount of it. This is regulated by controlling both the chimney draught and the air supply. The insulation of modern buildings has nowadays reached such a high quality that the reduced air circulation has to be considered when installing a wood stove. Therefore it is indeed relevant 4 whether there is an open window, a turned on extractor hood or a ventilation system. The concept of the stove regulator The stove regulator consists of a microprocessor-controlled regulator unit that receives and processes information, as well as giving information to regulator elements, such as the constantly operating supply-air damper. So the most important thing are sensors and switches which tune parameters that can be relevant for the combustion and: • measure the flue gas flow • measure the flue gas temperature • measure the flue gas flow rate • check the direction of flue gas flow • check the position of the window (open or closed) • check if the extractor hood is turned on • check if the stove door has just been opened to add wood The microprocessor-controlled regulator unit of the stove regulator knows the physical processes and uses the incoming data to calculate the ideal parameters for an efficient and eco-friendly combustion. For an optimum combustion, the unit sends the corresponding commands to the regulator elements: The supply-air damper regulates the supply of fresh air for the combustion. A draught regulator opens when the draught in the chimney becomes too strong. An optional chimney fan counteracts a weak chimney draught and if needed also operates in the heat-up phase. A radio module controls the extractor hood and turns it off if necessary. 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl 12.03.2008 16:29 Uhr Seite 5 N!VERSAL A regulated fire place offers ideal conditions for efficiency. The fire is behind glass in a completely regulated room and can’t do anything else than give its best: The entire energy of a renewable fuel! Thanks to the stove regulator these thoughts now belong to the past. There is no problem with leaving the house or letting the fire burn on its own for some time. That way you have time for your guests or for some carefree reading. Regulating is better than controlling The stove regulator acts! The results of the measurements show several minutes in advance how the temperature is going to change. Therefore it is difficult to compare it to controls. These are based on the assumption that the combustion process works optimally. As a result the assumed state may not correspond to the actual state. The stove regulator, however, is constantly in close contact with the fire and serves it in the best possible way. A small difference that contributes to a whole new quality of wood combustion. Saving energy The stove regulator optimises the combustion process for more efficiency, easy operation and a responsible way of treating our energy resources. The latter is of increasing importance with regards to the discussion of emission values, for example concerning particulate matter and CO. Impressive results can be achieved in combination with modern fire places. A fire that is controlled by the stove regulator burns much longer than an unregulated combustion and radiates heat more evenly. Comfortable operation With the stove regulator you get to know a completely new way of heating with wood. Before lighting a fire in an old stove you always had to ask yourself whether it was worth the trouble at the moment or whether there was enough time for lighting a fire before you had to leave the house. CE tested safety We all know the CE mark. We find it on many goods and often we don’t even pay attention anymore. In this case, however, it gives you a very good feeling. After all, this is about the safety of an open fire. The stove regulator complies with the strictest European regulations and has successfully passed intensive testing. A mark of safety and quality. 5 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl 12.03.2008 16:29 Uhr Seite 6 The UNIVERSAL stove regulator can be used with any make of stove, is simple to operate and effective. The UNIVERSAL stove regulator The best prerequisite for the optimum combustion Environmentally compatible technology for natural heating Fossil fuels are becoming increasingly expensive and there is no sign of a reversal of this trend even in the long-term. This is one reason for the increased interest in solid fuels. While the arguments for a traditional fireplace have previously been more sentimental, today this alternative also stands for economy, environmental awareness and state-of-the-art technology. Manufacturer independent! In principle, the UNIVERSAL stove regulator can be fitted to all solid fuel fires, such as tiled stove inserts, chimney inserts and woodburning stoves, where the fuel is added by hand. The regulator sensor measures the flow rate and temperature of the flue gas in the flue pipe and therefore operates independently of the combustion appliance being used. It represents a step back into the future, with the comfort of the today's world but with the original romance of a warm flame. Where others control, the UNIVERSAL regulates! A new sensor using a new measuring technology records the actual operating situation and passes this information on to the processor in the regulator unit. This processor compares the data with the optimum conditions stored within it. When the measured values deviate from the optimum values, the processor sends commands to the components which are connected to the unit in order to produce the desired result. The effects of the commands are checked up to twelve times a minute in order to get the best from the wood fire all the time the wood is burning. By using the automatic UNIVERSAL stove regulator from Kutzner + Weber, the optimum performance can be obtained from the combustion of manually charged fires. The efficiency of the stove is also increased. Using the regulator means that heat can be obtained for longer, emission values are lower and the heat output from the wood is better utilised for the same quantity of fuel. The reliability of the fire is also increased significantly. Everything from one source! The UNIVERSAL stove regulator is the only one which actually communicates with all the components which can be connected to it and is therefore the best prerequisite for creating the conditions for the optimum combustion. All the components are supplied from one source and therefore offer reliability, convenience and optimised combustion with only one unit. The use of additional safety devices when using the stove, such as for home ventilation, is not necessary. The regulator unit of the stove controller can be embedded in the wall. Use with controlled ventilation in the home! It is particularly recommended for use in passive energy houses in which an underpressure may result because the shell of the 16:29 Uhr Seite 7 building is sealed and this can affect the draw in the chimney. The UNIVERSAL stove regulator responds promptly against back-draught via a flow sensor and prevents harmful flue gases escaping from the chimney into the home. No additional underpressure sensor is therefore necessary. A chimney fan can be switched on or the extraction hood or monitored domestic ventilation system can be switched off depending on the operating situation. In the event of a malfunction, the control display sends out a visual and acoustic warning. Even when there is a power failure, the fault-free operation of the woodburning stove or tiled stove is still guaranteed! The effectiveness of the UNIVERSAL stove regulator 800 700 600 Temperature [ºC] 12.03.2008 The UNIVERSAL stove regulator fits in With its 4-line display, the intelligent processor controller makes it easy to adjust the woodburning stove or tiled stove to the different setup variants of the control system. (Safe operation of the stove is guaranteed at all times, even when there is a power failure.) 1h30 1h45 2h 2h15 By using the UNIVERSAL stove regulator, the duration of combustion can be extended by up to 50 % (for example, with 5.5 kg beech added at 250°C). The temperature is kept below 600°C so no uncontrolled temperature peaks occur which, in the worst case, could lead to a chimney fire. The UNIVERSAL stove regulator control display The control display provides you with information on the combustion behaviour and enables you to input the basic settings, such as the type of stove. The entire system is designed in a way that makes incorrect operation impossible. 1h15 Time [min Mode of operation of the UNIVERSAL stove regulator The aim is to achieve the optimum burn over the entire duration of combustion. From ignition to maintaining the glow, the Kutzner + Weber stove regulator consistently regulates all the components connected to it in order to provide the optimum conditions for each phase of the combustion. It is also able to detect automatically which phase of combustion the fire is in and to regulate accordingly or determine the optimum time for adding more fuel. • with regulator without regulator 0 [ 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl Combustion-air damper actuator • 2h30 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl 12.03.2008 16:29 Uhr Seite 8 Overview of all the components of the UNIVERSAL stove regulator The chimney-fan module The chimney-fan module is used for continuous actuation of the chimney fan. The module regulates the speed of the chimney fan according to the type of chimney fan and the flow rate of the flue gas. When using a chimney fan with an open cross section (e.g. KW Injekt) this can even be switched off completely. The chimney fan The KW Injekt chimney fan is installed on the chimney stack and, when necessary, switched on automatically by the UNIVERSAL stove regulator. Since it has a completely open cross section of 180 mm or 225 mm, with sufficient underpressure in the chimney, this can be switched off completely. The flue damper The tight-closing flue damper seals the flue path from the stove when it is not operating and therefore prevents the warm room air from escaping via the chimney. This effect can also happen the other way round, particularly with houses which are equipped with a controlled home ventilation system. The home ventilation system can produce an underpressure and therefore extract cold air from the outside through the stove into the home. • • • All you need for regulating comfort are the parts included in delivery and a supply-air damper that fits your stove. The installation of all other components is optional. UN!VE • The combustion air damper The continuously operating, tight-closing combustion-air damper regulates the flow of combustion air. By optimising the appropriate quantity of combustion air, the right amount of air can be supplied for each phase of the combustion. This prevents the combustion being too fast or too slow. This results in longer combustion times and better emission values. • The flue damper The tight-closing flue damper seals the flue path from the stove when it is not operating and therefore prevents the warm room air escaping via the chimney. This effect can also happen the other way round, particularly with houses which are equipped with a controlled home ventilation system. The home ventilation system can produce an underpressure and therefore extract cold air from the outside through the stove into the home. • The control display (module for setting the parameters) The control display keeps the operator informed about the current state of the stove by means of a four-line, blue-lit display. If provides information about the flue-gas temperature and flow rate and gives out a visual and acoustic warning signal if there is a fault. It is also used for setting the basic parameters for the regulator. Simply pressing the key on the display once is enough to open all the dampers and guarantee easy ignition. 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl 12.03.2008 The radio module This connection is used to connect radio modules which take over the control of the extraction hood etc. The laying of cables is therefore not required. • 16:29 Uhr Seite 9 The connection for the window contact switch The window contact switch monitors whether the window is open or closed. The extraction hood and the stove, for example, can therefore be operated at the same time without the stove malfunctioning or without having to switch on the chimney fan. • The connection for the monitored home ventilation system This connection makes it possible to connect the regulator to a monitored home ventilation system. In the event of a fault, the home ventilation system can be switched off to prevent hazardous flue gases from being extracted into the living area. The user is informed accordingly via the display. • The draught limiter The Z 150S KW motorised draught limiter is used to reduce the underpressure in the chimney if it is too high. The draught limiter is adjusted to the underpressure which is be limited (e.g. 15 Pa) by means of a weight and opens the pendulum damper automatically when the setpoint value is exceeded. If a higher underpressure is necessary (e.g. because of wind or during transition periods for lighting the stove), this is detected by the UNIVERSAL stove regulator which then closes the KW draught limiter via a motor. The KW draught limiter is also closed when the stove is not working, in order to prevent the room from cooling down unnecessarily. • • The regulator unit Different combustion scenarios are already stored in the regulator unit with the parameters set for the situation concerned. A sensor provides data on the current operating condition of the stove which are then recorded and evaluated by the regulator unit. All the components connected which can affect the combustion are actuated automatically to optimise the combustion. A control display keeps you informed of all the processes at any time. VERSAL • • The diagnostics or RS-485 interface This interface is used to connect the UNIVERSAL stove controller to the house bus system. A service technician can also read out all the important data and parameters via the interface. The wicket switch The wicket switch checks whether the wicket has been opened and, therefore, whether the stove has been lit etc. Since not all models have door switches and not every stove manufacturer provides them, the starting procedure can also be initiated on the display. • The connection for the extraction hood module This connection acts as an interface for the KW extraction hood module. This is fitted as an adapter in the extractionhood connection plug socket. The UNIVERSAL stove regulator can therefore switch off the extraction hood if necessary in order to prevent flue gases from being drawn into the room if the underpressure is too high (i.e. 4 Pa). The module is available as an accessory. • The sensor One of the most important components of the UNIVERSAL stove regulator. Apart from the temperature, the sensor also records the flow rate and direction of flow of the flue gas in the chimney. 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl 12.03.2008 16:29 Uhr Seite 10 The mode of operation of the UNIVERSAL stove regulator The mode of operation using an example A practical example is given to show how the UNIVERSAL stove regulator operates. It detects and regulates all the components which are connected to it. 10 Example: Insufficient flow in the chimney. There is a danger that flue gases will escape into the home through the stove. 1 Stove regulator The sensor detects that the rate of flow in the chimney is too small. The regulator opens the combustion-air damper fully, closes the draught limiter or switches on the chimney fan if necessary or switches off the extraction hood as well as the home ventilation system. 4 2 Display The display reports the fault visually and acoustically and, if necessary, outputs the message "Open the windows". 3 Combustion-air damper The combustion-air damper is opened fully to increase the draught in the chimney. 5 4 Home ventilation system 6 The home ventilation system is switched off if necessary in order to reduce the underpressure in the living area. 5 Extraction hood The extraction hood is switched off if necessary in order to prevent more air being extracted and the underpressure in the room where the stove is installed being increased. 6 Flue damper 2 The flue damper is opened in order to open the entire cross section of the chimney for the flue gas. 7 7 Draught regulator The draught regulator is locked when the draught in the chimney is too small. 1 3 8 8 9 9 10 Flue damper (with two combustion appliances connected) The flue damper is closed throughout the time the stove is operating and therefore turns off the forced-draught boiler. (Connecting solid-fuel stoves and combustion appliances and forced-draught burners to the same fluegas system is only permitted in some states of Germany.) Please ask your local chimney sweeper. e.g. oil-fired heating system While the stove is operating, the heating system is not operating. Chimney fan The chimney fan is actuated in order to convey the flue gases out of the chimney and increase the draught in the chimney. 8_73_Ofenst_Folder_engl 12.03.2008 16:29 Uhr Seite 11 Simply reassuring, the UNIVERSAL stove regulator A brief overview shows you the fundamental advantages of the UNIVERSAL stove regulator from Kutzner + Weber in comparison to standard products. standard product: ø Kutzner + Weber: Measurement Temperature sensor: K+W sensor: method Does not cover the different combustion cycles in detail and only measures the temperature of the flue gas.
