Zebra Technologies is pleased to offer a versatile desktop solution designed to improve your distributed printing needs and maximize your application flexibility. The EPL-based desktop label printers are now offered with optional internal ZebraNet PrintServer II. These printers, when equipped with internal ZebraNet PrintServer II, combine the benefits of the Zebra desktop products - - economic and compact ease-of-use - - with convenient and flexible networking connectivity. The EPL-based printers with internal ZebraNet PrintServer II option will integrate seamlessly into a company network, eliminating the need for a dedicated PC connection. The internal ZebraNet PrintServer II is very easy to use and configure on Ethernet networks. It supports a wide range of networking protocols and is compatible with Zebra’s suite of print server management software, ZebraNet Utilities v 7.0. The internal ZebraNet PrintServer II option enables you to simply connect the label printer to the network via the Ethernet port – no need to use a bulky external hardware device. This optimizes the compact space-saving design of the 2800 series printers as well as reduces a potential point of failure by reducing the cabling requirements associated with an external device. With the option List Price of $249 (US), the internal ZebraNet PrintServer II is the most cost-effective internal Ethernet connectivity solution for a desktop printer on the market. The internal ZebraNet PrintServer II is easy to configure using the ZebraNet Utilities: View software which is included at no charge. This software is GUI based and the point and click interface allows easy set-up and installation. ZebraNet Utilities: View is a set-up and configuration utility which can search the network to identify online Zebra printers, including devices that have not been configured. Configuring new printers to the network is just a click away. The PrintServer is DHCP capable so that IP addresses may be assigned dynamically within a network using TCP/IP – the administrator does not need to know which IP addresses are available on the network and does not have to assign a static IP address manually. ZebraNet Utilities: Alert monitors status and activity of all Zebra printers on the network – This utility alerts the administrator when there is an error condition, for example if the printer has run out of media. This immediate notification reduces printer downtime and increases application efficiency. Alert status for the EPL-based products can be detected for paper out condition, as well as either on-line or off-line status. Web Admin: The internal PrintServer II can also be managed remotely via the internet. Using a standard web-browser, the ZebraNet PrintServer II can be set up and monitored from one central location – the administrator does not have to be local to the network – it’s as easy as surfing the web! Flexible With internal ZebraNet PrintServer II installed, a wide range of application flexibility is available. The ZebraNet PrintServer II supports a wide range of operating systems and the most popular protocols. Operating systems supported include Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, Unix/Linux and Novell Netware. The PSII also supports TCP/IP and IPX/SPX protocols and can print from AS400 via TCP/IP. The ZebraNet PrintServer II is also configurable with HP JetAdmin™ and HP Web JetAdmin™, allowing administration from HP utilities. Even when equipped with the optional internal PrintServer II, the EPL-based printers also feature connectivity interfaces for USB and RS-232 serial communications. Enhanced Management and Control. The ZebraNet View utility allows IT managers to control rights given to administrators so that they see only the printers they manage, there is no need to browse the network to locate other devices. ZebraNet software utilities offer enhanced network printer management advantages such as individual device and event filtering, alert settings, prioritized error settings, log creation and report generation. ZebraNet View allows unlimited users, so costly additional licenses do not have to be purchased as the network grows. Rev. 2 2 08/18/03 Competitive Performance Zebra’s internal ZebraNet PrintServer II option guarantees competitive value and performance. Notable competitive features which set Zebra’s solution apart from desktop competition such as Cognitive include the following: The internal ZebraNet PrintServer II includes as no-charge comprehensive full-featured ZebraNet Utilities v7.0 which allows superior PrintServer management. Cognitive desktop printers with internal Ethernet offer very basic software tools with the printer, but then require costly upgrades to ‘premium’ software packages to obtain many of the features that are standard with ZebraNet Utilities. Additionally, ZebraNet software supports unlimited users – This is a unique advantage over the Cognitive solution which requires limited-number user licenses to be purchased that can cost over $1000. ZebraNet supports DHCP dynamic IP address assignment which the Cognitive products do not - the IP address for their printers must be assigned manually with their solution, which is a time-consuming administrative chore. Furthermore, the Zebra printers, when configured with internal PrintServer II offer standard serial, USB and Ethernet ports for maximum connectivity flexibility. The Epl-based printers with internal ZebraNet PrintServer II option are web-enabled solutions allowing remote administration via a standard web-browser. Printers can be monitored from the convenience of a local desk or from another continent. Cognitive printers with internal Ethernet are not web-enabled so the administrator has to be local to the network. Are there any differences in functionality between a ZebraNet Print Server II with an EPL based printer and with a ZebraLink enabled ZPL printer? YES: Using a web browser: a) In a ZebraLink environment, with either a web browser or with the ZebraNet Utilities: View software, there are a variety of web pages which display a wealth of status information regarding both of the: ZebraLink enabled printer and ZebraNet PrintServer b) However, when used with an EPL based printer, the web pages displaying printer status are not available at this time, only the web page showing status of the PrintServer II will be displayed. The PrintServer II can be easily configured, allowing the network administrator to select protocols used and to choose status reporting methods. Alert messaging can be sent to the following destinations: a) A ZebraLink enabled ZPL printer can be set-up to send alerts to the following destinations: Serial port Parallel port E-mail TCP/IP - Virtually unlimited combination of alert addresses and conditions can be configured with a ZPL printer UDP SNMP b) EPL printers can send alerts using the following protocols and destinations: IPX/SPX TCP/IP – up to 5 IP addresses SMTP e-mail Printer status reporting: a) A ZebraLink enabled ZPL printer can report one or all of the following printer status/error conditions: Paper out Ribbon out Head too hot Head cold Head open Supply too hot Ribbon in Rev 2 6 08/18/03 Rewind Cutter jammed Printer paused PQ job completed Label ready Head element bad Basic runtime Basic forced Power on b) EPL printers can report the following printer status/error conditions: On line Off line Paper out 2) Can I upgrade an existing EPL-based printer with an internal ZebraNet PrintServer II option? No – the internal ZebraNet Print Server II option is factory installed only, use the external ZebraNet PrintServer II, via the parallel port on existing printers. 3) Can the internal ZebraNet PrintServer II option work on a computer network that is running both TCP/IP and IPX protocols simultaneously? Yes. The ZebraNet PrintServer II runs all of its available protocols simultaneously. This means that the ZebraNet PrintServer II can run on mixed networks such as a network using Microsoft, Unix and Novell NetWare as operating systems. 4) Will the ZebraNet PrintServer II allow connectivity to anything other than a P.C. network? Yes. The ZebraNet PrintServer II allows connectivity to systems such as IBM’s AS400, provided that it is configured using TCP/IP. 5) Will the ZebraNet PrintServer II option work on a 100 megabit per second network? Both the internal and external ZebraNet PrintServer II options are 10Base-T print servers. This means that the data cannot travel any faster than 10 megabits per second. The ZebraNet PrintServer II can be deployed on a network that is utilizing 10/100 hubs, but the ZebraNet PrintServer II will operate only at 10 megabits per second. 6) How can I order an EPL-based printer with internal PrintServer II? Refer to the custom configuration pages for the relevant printer in the Zebra Desktop Price List. Rev 2 7 08/18/03
