WHAT IS A TIU AND HOW DOES IT WORK? TIUs form part of a community heating network (CHN) that provides central heating and domestic hot water to individual properties or apartments within a single development. Traditionally in the UK, housing stocks have been built with individual gas combi boilers located in each apartment. Conversely, across mainland Europe Community Heating Networks - (or District Heating Systems as they were previously known), have long been the solution to provide heating and hot water in large community developments, with a centralised energy centre coupled with a low temperature hot water network. In recent years we have seen a resurgence of CHN developments in the UK as the available technology improves and becomes
more popular in helping comply with current legislation for energy efficiency and reduced emissions. Community heating networks operate from a single energy source (the energy centre) that distributes energy in the form of hot water circulating within a primary network throughout a building or housing development. Each individual house or apartment has a secondary network which is connected to the primary network via a thermal interface unit that heats DHW and space heating water via plate heat exchangers to meet the individual demands of the property.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS: Designed for high efficiency performance • Designed and manufactured in the UK to be fully compatible with UK heating and hot water systems • Highly energy efficient CHN systems are more eco-friendly and economical than alternative heating methods over system lifetime • Radiance TIUs are ‘Demand Controlled’ so there is only flow through the unit when there is a requirement for heat or DHW, which reduces unnecessary heat loss, lime-scale build-up and supports whole system longevity • All internal pipe work is manufactured from high quality, flexible, fully insulated corrugated stainless steel pipes which reduce heat loss and permit bespoke configurations to be made with ease • WRAS approved
Options to suit individual projects • Radiance TIUs can be configured with a number of optional extras to suit any individual projects requirements. Reliance Worldwide Corporation (UK) Ltd offer a system design support service to help Architects and Specifiers to ensure maximum energy efficiency is achieved for their projects • Individual metering options include automatic meter reading or a prepayment type meters for minimal disruption to occupants. A meter reading service can also be provided via a partner organisation if required
8
Easy to install and commission • The absence of gas or flues increase safety for occupants and reduces whole system installation costs in terms of both materials and labour time • Connections are made easy with SharkBite® push-fit ball valve connectors for an even faster installation. Ball valves with female BSP connections are also available if required • Each unit is delivered fully factory assembled and is 100% leak tested prior to despatch to ensure product performance and reduce commissioning time • The absence of soldered or brazed joints minimises contamination and leak potential eliminating the requirement for flushing prior to commissioning
Reduced maintenance • All pipe connections are union fittings sealed with washers for reliable joints and easy maintenance • Radiance TIUs incorporate a patented spring loaded expansion vessel which delivers a high performance compact size unit with extended product lifetime which is entirely maintenance free • Each unit is marked with a unique serial number, product code and production date to ensure individual product identifications/traceability for maintenance records

OPTIONAL EXTRAS Radiance® Thermal Interface Units are designed and manufactured to your individual project requirements. We offer a choice of optional extra components which can be included during assembly to meet your exact specification needs. Our in-house engineering department is available for advice on specification, system design and efficiency.
First Fix Rail (FFR) A first fix rail permits phased installation of the unit and is supplied complete with ball valves to allow for pipework to be pre-installed independent of the main TIU. The packaging also includes a handy fixing template to aid the drilling of fixing holes in the correct location. The pipe work can be flushed and pressure tested, before the unit is installed and connected to the system. The FFR is available with or without a flushing bypass valve on the primary side.
Ball Valves Connections are made easy with SharkBite push-fit connectors (as standard). Female BSP connections are also available, if required. For more information on SharkBite push-fit plumbing solutions please visit www.sharkbiteplumbing.co.uk
Thermostatic By-Pass Valve (TBPV) The thermostatic by-pass valve ensures that the temperature of the primary flow pipe will not drop below the set point by circulating water through the primary system if necessary. This enables instantaneous DHW to be available quicker than if the system cooled completely. The TBPV will only circulate water when required thus reducing the energy loss of the system.
Thermostatic Heating Control Valve (THCV) The thermostatic heating control valve offers better control over the secondary flow temperature and keeps the primary return temperature to a minimum which means the network performs at a higher efficiency.
Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV) - DHW The thermostatic mixing valve controls the temperature of the DHW and limits it to the set temperature reducing scalding risk.
Flushing By-Pass Valve An integrated connection/by-pass valve allows flushing of the network whilst by-passing the thermal interface unit.

Ultrasonic Heat Meter An ultrasonic heat meter can be installed within the thermal interface unit to accurately meter energy consumption for billing purposes. The M-Bus interface for remote meter reading is included as standard.
Mechanical Heat Meter A mechanical heat meter can be installed as an alternative to an ultrasonic heat meter to also accurately meter energy consumption for billing purposes. The M-Bus interface for remote meter reading is included as standard.
Water Meter A water meter can be installed to accurately measure water consumption of both hot and cold water for billing purposes. It also includes a pulse output to enable reading by the heat meter.
Meter Reading An M-Bus master unit is available to automatically read all meters on the M-Bus network. A wireless radio meter reading device is also available for manual meter reading. This works in conjunction with an android phone or tablet where information will be saved.
Prepayment Unit The prepayment unit takes the reading from the heat meter and will shut off the TIU when there is no credit left. The unit communicates with a central server via GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). It is also certified as an ENE3 display. A partner company is able to offer a full prepayment solution - please contact us for details.
Cover Lock A locking mechanism is available to prevent tampering with the unit settings.

DIVERSITY CHARTS Community heating networks show a high diversity on their domestic hot water (DHW) load. The diversity factor depends on how many units are connected to the network and also on the network layout. The maximum network load can be greatly reduced by including DHW diversity. This allows a reduction in the required pipe size, saving on installation and maintenance cost. The charts below give the load factors depending on the number of units connected to a branch or network.
