This guide describes the requirements needed to install and run the Replibit appliance and agent software.
Replibit offers the freedom to choose your appliance hardware; however, there are some minimum hardware requirements. We recommend that you verify that the hardware is compatible. You must confirm that your complete server and/or individual components are compatible with Ubuntu 14.04 (“Trusty Tahr” LTS) 64-bit. Before installation, please check http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/
It is highly recommended that the Replibit Appliance software be installed on bare metal so you can take advantage of automated backup verification booting. For deploying Replibit as a VM, see Running the Appliance as a Nested VM in this guide. Here are the minimum hardware requirements: For 1 to 5 protected systems: 8GB RAM 2 CPU Cores (i5 or better) Processor must support “Hardware-Assisted Virtualization” (Intel VT, AMD-V) 2 physical hard drives are required For every additional 5 protected systems, add 4GB RAM and 2 CPU cores.
Hard drive Must have 2 hard drives: 1 for OS and 1 for storage
Recommended max individual hard drive size: 2TB drives or smaller
OS hard drive needs to be at least 250GBS in size
RAID Processor OS volume RAID Processor must support: recommendation: Use a Hardware-Assisted hardware RAID controller for the Virtualization (Intel VT, or OS hard drive and configure a AMD-V) RAID 1 mirror Intel processors perform Storage volume RAID significantly better than recommendation: Unless you AMD processors are using a SAN, use the built-in software RAID
Hybrid software/hardware RAID controllers: NOT supported
To confirm compatibility with Ubuntu on a server, check http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/server/. To confirm if individual components (processor, RAID controllers, etc.) are compatible with Ubuntu, click http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/catalog/ To verify if your RAID controller is supported by Ubuntu, click http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/catalog/
High End Workstation: Dell OptiPlex 9020 MT with 4th generation i7 Processor http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201201-10382/ Mid-Range Tower Server: Dell PowerEdge T620 http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201207-11426/ 1U Rack Server: PowerEdge R620 http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201210-11906/ Mid-Range Rack Server: PowerEdge R720 http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/server/make/Dell/?query=R720&level=Any&release=12.04+LTS The complete range of Dell’s PowerEdge 12G servers are now certified with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. NOTE: The Zenith BDR with a Tyan 2912 motherboard does not support Linux.
Replibit has a Type-1 Hypervisor embedded in it; therefore, we DO NOT recommend that it be run in a virtual environment. MS Hyper-V DOES NOT support nested virtualization. VMWare ESX 5.1 functions on both the Intel and AMD platform. VMWare ESX 5.5 only works on the Intel platform. For nested VM deployments, there are edits that need to be made to the ReplibitGuest.vmx file. Server OS Windows Server 2003 R2 Windows Server 2008 Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows Server 2012 Windows Server 2012 R2
Workstation OS Windows 7 Professional or above Windows 8 Professional or above Windows 8.1 Professional or above
NOTE: Replibit DOES NOT support Linux or OS X environments. Replibit DOES NOT support Windows XP, Server 2000, or Server 2003. Replibit DOES NOT support backups of file systems other than NTFS (for example, FAT, ReFS).
Replibit supports backups for MBR and GPT partitions, but DOES NOT support instant virtualization for GPT volumes and for systems with UEFI booting. o See also http://support.replibit.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/29/0/uefi-based-systems.
Replibit only supports instant virtualization of systems where the “System Reserved” partition is on the first volume in the system.
Replibit recommends using the latest Firefox or Chrome web browsers. NOTE: If you receive a browser error message "Canvas Not Supported" after starting a VM in test mode when trying to open for VNC connectivity, it is because you are using Internet Explorer.
