Site Prep
Substation
Site prep for the construction of wastewater treatment facilities requires highly corrosion-resistant conduit, conduit bodies, elbows, expansion couplings and liquidtight fittings.
The substation is the point in the transmission and distribution system where voltage is stepped down and power distributed throughout the facility. While some wastewater treatment plants use local power with a generator back-up, larger plants have their own substation.
Elbow Sweeps and Fittings • Non-metallic and corrosion resistant • Weigh less than metallic systems and can be installed in less than half the time
VBM Switching Systems
• Resistant to sunlight and rated for use with 90° C conductors
• Vacuum interruption and solid dielectric insulation for gas-free, oil-free operation • Provides up to 100,000 maintenance-free operations, depending on operating mechanism and control voltage selection
XJG Expansion Couplings • Integral bonding jumper protected from tampering and theft • Fast and easy installation — no disassembly required • Exceeds code requirements for long conduit runs to allow linear movement

Headworks
Clarification
In the most corrosive area of the entire plant, it is strongly recommended that stainless steel, PVC or PVC-coated products be used. The moisture in this area requires liquidtight fittings, and conduit bodies must be highly corrosion resistant.
Wastewater flows from the headworks to primary and secondary clarification, which focuses on the smaller particles still remaining. This treatment phase tends to be in the open, where it is exposed to the elements, making corrosionresistant electrical products, liquidtight fittings and hazardous area lighting essential.

Waste-Activated and Return-Activated Sludge
Microorganisms, which play a key role in the wastewater purification process, must be provided with the ideal temperature and oxygen level. When they become overpopulated, some of them are removed through the WAS and RAS processes, which are extremely corrosive and often outdoors.
Biological Treatment
Wastewater is biologically treated in the Aeration/ Oxidation Basins. Aerators pump air into the water to keep solids in suspension and provide oxygen to the microorganisms that feed on the bacteria. Biological treatment can take place in either open or enclosed tanks. Either method requires stainless steel, PVC or PVC-coated electrical products.
OCAL-BLUE ® GUA Conduit Boxes • Double-coated hazardous location fittings for extremely corrosive environments • Iron bodies with iron or cast aluminum covers, a urethane coating inside and out and PVC coating bonded to the exterior
OCAL-BLUE ® FS & FD Device Boxes and Covers • Double-coated inside and out for superior corrosion protection • Pressure sealing sleeves protect connections and conduit • Look for the distinctive T&B blue color
XP Explosion-Proof Flexible Couplings • Explosion-proof and corrosion-resistant construction for hazardous or wet locations • Ideal for confined spaces where tight bends in conduit systems are required — or for applications that vibrate

Disinfection
Motor Control Center
Some wastewater treatment plants disinfect treated water prior to releasing it into a lake or river — other plants do not. Those who disinfect may use chlorine, bleach or ultra-violet rays that destroy or prevent the reproduction of any bacteria remaining in the water. Disinfection treatment generally takes place in an outdoor setting using harsh chemicals. This creates a highly corrosive environment for all components.
Most stages of the treatment process involve keeping fluids in motion. This requires powerful electrical motors that, in turn, require a large number of connecting and supporting components. As with other areas, corrosion resistance is a key consideration in component selection for motors.
