Contents 5 What’s in this kit 7 Turning on your computer 7 Connect filters 9 Connecting your modem to the wall 11 Connecting your modem to the computer 16 Confirming your account What’s in this kit Check that you have the following items: 1 x black power supply cable 1 x single PC modem 5 2 x filters 1 x grey DSL cable 1 x yellow ethernet cable 6 This guide will take you through each step to set up your modem and a basic internet connection: 1 Turn on your computer • Plug the supplied filter into the jackpoint. Jackpoint Filter • Your PC or laptop needs to be located within 2 meters of the jackpoint where you will connect you modem. • If you need a longer ethernet cable, this can be purchased from your nearest electronics store. Connect filters Phone cable Phone (or other device) • You need to connect a filter wherever you have a phone line in use including phones, faxes or digital TV decoder. This will remove interference on your phone lines and improve your broadband service. • Unplug your phone, fax or digital TV decoder from the jackpoint. • If you need more filters, you can purchase them from Telecom. Call us on 0800 00 30 40 7 • Plug your phone (or other device) into the end of the filter marked ‘phone’. 8 3 Connecting your modem to the wall • Plug the black power cable into the modem and turn on the power at the wall. • Plug one end of the grey DSL cable into the DSL port on your modem. Filter with ADSL port Power plug Jackpoint Grey DSL cable Modem with DSL port Black power cable Phone • Plug the other end of the grey DSL cable into the ADSL port on the filter. 9 10 4 Connecting your modem to the computer • Plug the other end of the yellow ethernet cable into the ethernet port on your computer which has a symbol like this: Modem Yellow ethernet cable Your computer Modem Ethernet port found on your computer Yellow ethernet cable • Plug one end of the yellow ethernet cable into the ethernet port on the modem. 11 12 ! Before you continue: Check your modem On/off switch • Press the black on/off button to turn the modem on. • Check that the Power, Ethernet, DSL and Internet lights are green (USB light is not lit). This can take about 60 seconds. • Some lights flash once the modem is in use. 13 14 5 Confirming your account Your personal Telecom Broadband account needs to be activated. To activate your account: • Open Internet Explorer (or other web browser) on your computer. • Type in www.telecom.co.nz/broadbandsetup • Follow the online activation steps. 16 Congratulations! You should now be experiencing Telecom broadband. Your free premium services As a valued customer of Telecom, you are eligible to a range of free premium services, including: • Up to 11 free email accounts – everyone in your family can have their own email account • Data usage meter – you can track how much data you have used in the month to help manage your account. • A Free Telecom Security Suite, powered by McAfee for PC’s with Microsoft Windows® 2000 or higher – you can help protect your computer from internet nasties and viruses.
