37 “I CAN ODULE RALLY” 1: THRO ”I CAN RALLY” PRACTICE ACTIVITY O1 MODULE 1: THROW TENNIS 4 Rally Ball Goal: To consistently exchange the ball. Rules of the Game: Players are in teams (pairs) and cooperatively rally back and forth to each other. Players must recover to “home base” between every shot. Team with the longest rally wins. The rally is over when: The ball bounces twice The ball goes out of the designated play area or in the net After a set time or, a specific number of rallies, the player must switch with the one waiting behind. Note: This is the standard formation used for players to practice groundstrokes TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements. Tactic: Keep the ball in play through consistent rallying Reception: Set-up: Groundstrokers must receive the ball in a sideways body position with the racquet prepared. Movement: Players must recover to “home base” after every shot. Grip/Impact Point/Hitting Zone: All of these can be reinforced during this activity. I am a Good Sport: Cooperate with partner Note: It is recommended to “flip flop” back and forth from the Red Throw and Floor activities to this activity multiple times in a lesson. Rules of the Game: Players are in teams (pairs) and cooperatively rally crosscourt back and forth to each other. Players must recover to “Home base” between every shot. Team with the longest rally wins. The rally is over when: The ball bounces twice The ball goes out of the designated play area or in the net Start with FH cross courts and then switch to BH. TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements. Tactic Moving an opponent around Reception: Set-up: Groundstrokers must receive the ball in a sideways body position with the racquet prepared before the ball bounces. Movement: Players must recover to “home base” after every shot. Hitting Zone: Help players direct the ball by understanding the ball goes wherever the racquet face is “looking”. Make the racquet face extend towards the target for a long distance during the stroke. Grip/Impact Point: These can also be reinforced during this activity. I am a Good Sport: Cooperate with partner KEY: Instructor Player Marker Drop Down lines Ball flight Red Court Net 39 “I CAN RALLY” ”I CAN RALLY” PRACTICE ACTIVITY O3 MODULE 1: THROW TENNIS 4 Cross-courts & Down-the-lines Goal: To understand moving the opponent around by placing the ball. Reinforce the tennis terminology of “cross-court” and “down-the-line”. Rules of the Game: Cooperatively rally the ball back and forth to each other. One player sends the ball only crosscourt. The other sends the ball only down-the-line. One point is gained if a pair completes a sequence of 2 cross courts and 2 lines. Switch roles. Do FH only then BH only. The sequence doesn’t count if the ball goes outside of the Orange court area. Recover to “home base” between each shot. TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements. Rules of the Game: Players in teams (serving team and returning team). Each time a server comes up they can serve the ball anywhere in the Orange service box. Server gets 2 chances to put the ball in (Reinforce the concept of 1st & 2nd serve). If they miss both serves they lose the point (introduce the concept of ‘Double fault’). If the serve goes in, the returner must place the ball back anywhere in the Orange court. If they do, no point for either team. If they miss, the serving team gets a point. After the point, the next players on the serving and returning team come up. First team to get 5 points wins. Switch teams. TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements. Tactic: To understand starting the point with consistency. Set-up: Server starts in proper serve location (behind Orange baseline). Returner starts on Orange baseline in ready position. Impact Point: Server tosses the ball up and impacts at full upward extension. Returner sends the ball back into the servers’ court. The returner can respond with either FH or BH (depending on serve placement). Returners should impact the ball: Waist level Out front (in front of body) Comfortable distance from body I am a Good Sport: Keep the score out loud KEY: Instructor Player Marker Drop Down lines Ball flight Red Court Net 41 “I CAN START A POINT” PRACTICE ACTIVITY O5 Serve to Targets Goal: To understand starting the point with an advantage. Rules of the Game: Players are in teams. Each time a server comes up they attempt to serve the ball to a target on the BH side of the court (use big targets like a chair, tennis ball box, etc.). Each server gets 2 attempts per turn. 1 point for every target hit by a team member. Once every player on the team has had a turn, the team on the other end of the court serves. 1st team to 5 points wins (the team that is behind gets 1 serve per team member to try to catch up). TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements. Tactic: To understand gaining advantage by serving with placement. Set-up: Servers start in proper serve location (behind Orange baseline). Grip: A FH grip will allow the players to angle the racquet face easier. If the player has control over the racquet face, a continental grip may be possible. Impact Point: Server sends a ball with an overhand serve. Ball impact should be with racquet at full upward extension Hitting Zone: To direct the ball to the target, the racquet face must “look” at the target through the impact. I am a Good Sport: Pick up balls quickly KEY: Instructor Player Marker Drop Down lines Ball flight Red Court Net 42 “I CAN PLAY NET” PRACTICE ACTIVITY O6 Throw to Cross-court Volley Goal: To reinforce any volley technique. Rules of the Game: Split the court into 3 lanes. 2 players in each lane (one volleyer, one feeder). The “feeder” cooperatively throws underhanded to the volleyer. The volleyer must send the ball to a designated crosscourt target which gains one point; Volleyer in the FH lane only uses FH volley and volleys crosscourt to the centre lane. Volleyer in the BH lane uses only BH volleys aimed crosscourt into the centre lane. Volleyer in the centre lane alternates FH volleys to the BH lane and FH volleys to the FH lane. Extra players pick up balls. Rotate in a big circle 2 positions to the left (big circle) after 2 minutes. Player with the most points at the end wins. TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements. Tactic: Gain advantage by volleying to the open court. Reception: Set-up: Volleyers must receive the ball in a sideways body position with the racquet prepared. Grip: Reinforce the continental grip. “Catching action”: Reinforce that the basic volley has the feel of “catching the ball” (avoid “hitting”, “punching”, “blocking”). Impact Point: Impact ball at chest level, out front, at a comfortable distance from the body. Hitting Zone: To direct the ball to the target, the racquet face must “look” at the target through the impact. I am a Good Sport: Pick up the balls quickly KEY: Instructor Player Marker Drop Down lines Ball flight Red Court Net 43 “I CAN PLAY NET” PRACTICE ACTIVITY O7 Groundstroke to Volley Goal: To reinforce any volley technique. Rules of the Game: Players are in teams (pairs). One player is the “feeder” and cooperatively sends groundstrokes to a partner at net position hitting volleys. Volleyer uses FH & BH volleys to maintain a consistent exchange. The team with the most rallies in 1 minute wins. Everyone moves one position to their left (big circle). Rules of the Game: Players are on 2 teams. Each team gets one Orange court and has players in the following positions: Positioned at the side of the court. Toss a light ball underhand that lands just in front of the service line. Baseline player moves up to hit the tossed ball as an approach shot (use FH first then BH). They then move to the net and attempt a volley to groundstroke exchange. One player is at the baseline on the other end (receiving the approach shot) and tries to maintain a groundstroke to volley rally of 2 shots. The team gets one point if the volleyer and groundstroker complete the approach/groundstroke/volley sequence (3 shots). TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT During the activity only highlight one technical element. The activity may be repeated multiple times to cover other elements. Tactic: Gain advantage through coming to the net and volleying. Reception: Set-up: Volleyers must receive the ball in a sideways body position with the racquet prepared. Movement: Players “walk-through” their approach shot and must split step after their approach shot. “Catching action”: Reinforce that the basic volley has the feel of “catching the ball” (avoid “hitting”, “punching”, “blocking”). Grip/Impact Point/Hitting Zone: All of these can be reinforced during this activity. Rules of the Game: Players are split into two teams. Each team has a “base” (designated by a marker) at the side of the court. Players from team 1 always play on one end of the Orange Court. Players on team 2 always play on the other end. Matches do not start until Instructor yells, “GO”. Choose a "STOP" target, eg first to 5 points. All players start at the same time and the first player to reach that target shouts "STOP" to stop all the matches. In every match, the player who is leading when “STOP” is shouted gets a win for his or her team. If matches are a draw when "STOP" is shouted, one more point is played to find a winner. Rotate players and play again. Example from the ITF Competition website: www.tennisplayandstay.com/competitions/stop.html TACTICAL/TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT Reinforce all the techniques and tactics previously learned. Note: Instructors need to use the play times to evaluate skills for Certificate of Achievement Tactics: Keep the ball in play to win points with consistency Move the opponent around to help them miss (use cross courts and Down-the-lines) Place the serve to gain advantage Play the net to take the ball earlier Techniques: -Movement Cycle -Grip -Impact Point -Set-up -Hitting Zone -”Catching action” on volleys -”Throwing action” on serves -Service position -Bodywork/rotation on groundstrokes I am a Good Sport: Shake hands after the game KEY: Instructor Player Marker Drop Down lines Ball flight Red Court Net 46 “I CAN COMPETE” PRACTICE ACTIVITY O10 Orange No-Ad game Goal: To Play tennis (serve, rally, score). Rules of the Game: This is a standard game of Orange Tennis. One player serves for the whole game. Each game is regular tennis scoring except a “sudden death” point is played at 40-40 (No Ad scoring). The returner gets to choose to play the point on the Deuce or Ad side. If there are more players than courts, each player plays one game and then rotates off. Rules of the Game: Players are placed in teams of two. The first player plays 2 points against an opponent from the opposite team (they serve one point, the opponent serves one point). They then ‘high five’ their partner who comes in and plays for 2 points. The score is continuous regardless of which partner plays. Play up to 7 points. To not play the same opponent, one Tag team can have players stay for 3 points (while the other plays 2).
