Cost effective variable-speed power generation has been a goal of industry for many years. Engines have optimal running conditions, where fuel consumption and engine wear is minimized. These conditions vary from engine to engine and most often are different than a wound-field generator’s synchronous speed. Recently, this important subject has been receiving greater attention worldwide, as the industry recognizes the need for greater fuel savings, a smaller and lighter overall system, and lower maintenance costs. The variable-speed benefits have traditionally been offset by high initial investment. With the introduction of low cost and high efficiency permanent magnet generators, coupled with advanced power electronics, the equation is now swinging in favor of variable-speed.
