Totally Guitars - Totally Guitars Generated: 11 September, 2017, 01:47 Do you still own your original LP's and albums? Posted by neverfoundthetime - 2009/09/04 19:24 _____________________________________ I wonder, who else has done this terrible deed: dumped their entire vinyl LP album collection which they had owned since childhood? I just did the dirty deed, out of sheer desperation while moving house. You see, it was a matter of necessity: no time, no space, no point, as I’d just given away my turntable. I’d never have believed it could be done of my own free will. But, I did it, dumped them all. Well, nearly all. Some had been moved the day before and survived by sheer luck. I did save a couple deliberately though. Thought they might be important or valuable some day. What survived? Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (how could anyone in their right mind dump that!) Band on The Run, In Search of the Lost Chord by The Moody Blues, Broad Sword by Jethro Tull and, for some reason, Ian Jury and The Blockheads (don’t ask!). I now have all my music saved digitally which is just brilliant and I’ve been collecting every song I ever wanted but didn’t have by hook or by crook. I have no sympathy for the recording industry when they moan or threaten in respect of copyright. I have bought most of my favourite music not just once but several times over: on vinyl on tape and on CD. I truly own that music. Why is it that a CD just doesn’t seem to be as valuable as a vinyl album? Anyway, I thought I’d ask the question: Who still owns all their LP’s and albums and which is their most precious? ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? Posted by Chasplaya - 2009/09/04 19:29 _____________________________________ I have whats left after shipping them to NZ 26 years ago, the carrier lost half my collection , insurance yep replacement nope! Lost one rare double Hendrix album, I got from a student at College who was short of money for ahem well it all went in a puff of smoke. I hear they are making a comeback and turntables are now in the shops with USB connections. The industry states they can't recreate the same quality on CD or DVD as they could on vinyl. ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? Posted by neverfoundthetime - 2009/09/04 19:33 _____________________________________ I had The Ruttles album and considered it valuable for it's rarity and satirical value... but someone nicked it! I'm never going to make a fortune on EBay now... ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? Anybody interested in buying the whole collection? One of my most prized is John Renbourn's The Hermit, autographed while he was in the basement and we were listening to Walter Gerwig playing Bach on the lute, an album from the 50s or 60s. I guess you had to be there, I'm certainly glad I was. Neil ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? Two of my favs (Skynard's Street Survivor w/ flames & Heart's Little Queen) are hanging on the wall above my organ (don't play that well either). Really feel like they're works of art! ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? They sit in a box in the garage except two that are in frames and hanging on the wall. ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? Posted by BigBear - 2009/09/04 22:28 _____________________________________ I had them all until about 6 months ago when I pitched all of them and all my cassettes (~1,000). Most had been played to death (even though I had a really good phono cartridge and stylus) and I figured evertything had gone to CD and digital. I had all of them on CD anyway! I was in a "throw out" mood that day!! ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? Posted by Music Junkie - 2009/09/04 22:57 _____________________________________ No, sadly I got rid of all my vinyl several years ago. I did rip them all to digital before tossing though. So now I get that nice little popping sound on my digital tracks.... Kind of cool. I have clean digital copies as well, but there is just something about the record type sound... Takes me back to rushing home from the store to play the album over and over and over.... Tossed all of my tapes, as they were well worn and sounded like crud anyway. CD's got ripped and are stored on my external hard drives. Two separate copies in case something happens to one of the drives. If I ever lost the collection, I would cry like a little school girl..... I did keep my "must have" CD's though. Stored under the bed. Over the last few years, my digital collection has gotten completely out of hand. Well over 30,000 files and growing. I stumbled upon 60's and 70's prog rock, and fell in love with it. Have quite a collection of obscure bands from all over the world. Sometimes, I can't even figure out what to listen to.....lol Neil: since you are a fan of prog rock, are there any must listens to's out there that you could recommend???? ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? Posted by Chasplaya - 2009/09/04 23:07 _____________________________________ From Wikipedia for those that are interested: In spite of their flaws, such as the lack of portability, records still have enthusiastic supporters. Vinyl records continue to be manufactured and sold today, especially by independent rock bands and labels, although record sales are considered to be a niche market composed of audiophiles, collectors and DJs. Old records and out of print recordings in particular are in much demand by collectors the world over. Many popular new albums are given releases on vinyl records and older albums are also given reissues as well, sometimes on audiophile grade vinyl with high quality sleeves. 4/9 Totally Guitars - Totally Guitars Generated: 11 September, 2017, 01:47 In the United Kingdom, sales of new vinyl records (particularly 7 inch singles) have increased significantly in recent years, somewhat reversing the downward trend seen during the 1990s. In the United States, annual vinyl sales increased by 85.8% between 2006 and 2007,and by 89% between 2007 and 2008. ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? I only had a couple and those were stolen shortly after I got them so I never really had any. But I did have a copy of Funeral for a Friend and I loved it. Great album. Of course my favorite song was Funeral/Love lies bleeding. Now that I'm older and actually paying attention, I discover so much music does not meet with my approval lyrically. Shame. ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? You know Andy my third purchase was a Jeremy Spencer (ex Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac) album, and I only bought it knowing he was in PG'sFM and not knowing he had left and joined the Children OF God Cult, this album is actually called Jeremy Spencer and the Children of God, duh you'd think I would have clicked, now I really did not like the lyrics but the music was magical and I block out the lyrics and just listen to his magical guitar work ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? I have all of the Beatles on vinyl including an autographed A Hard Days Night. I have them all on display or on frames. Nothing compares to the art work that were on the covers and they add to the room. Not sure my wife approves totally but she lets me have my room anyway. ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums? And my prize is a original" Hard Day's Night" still in the celophane wrapper. I have several "Meet The Beatles" originals. White Album, Sargent Pepper, Abby Road, Let it Be, Revolver, Help!. And I also have several Parlophone releases which were recorded and released the original way the Beatles intended. "With The Beatles", "Beatles For Sale" "Hard Day's Night".;) ============================================================================ Re:Do you still own your original LP's and albums?
