Projectors, Floodlights and Wall Washers Projectors use special reflectors, lenses, and shutters to shape the beam of light. A floodlight produces a wide and symmetrical beam, which is effective for lighting a large painting or uplighting the ceiling.
Troubleshooting Can you use track anywhere? No. Track is not permitted in damp locations, such as exterior overhangs or near showers, or bathtubs.

TRACK LIGHTING
Can you install track on the wall? A wall washer uses a special kick reflector to produce an asymmetrical beam, trying to light the entire wall from top to bottom.
Yes, provided that it is well anchored. Some spotlights are too heavy for wall installation, however.

Task lighting provides higher levels of illumination on specific tasks, such as reading or cooking.
To highlight textured surfaces, such as brick, stone, or rough wall coverings, light should graze the surface from a steep angle. Here, the track should be located within12" of the wall for the proper aiming. Use one spotlight per foot of wall and lamps with narrow beams of light.

General lighting provides all-around illumination that enables you to find your way around, see and socialize with other people, and clean up.
To wash a wall, locate the track 24" to 30" from the wall. Use one wall washer or flood light for every two or three feet of lighted wall. Space them evenly.

To light artwork and featured objects, spotlights should be aimed at a 30° angle from vertical. In a conventional 8'-9' ceiling, this means that the track should generally be located 24" to 30" from the wall. Use one spotlight for small objects, two or more for larger ones. Choose a lamp whose beam will cover the target object.
No. Track should not be installed “upside down” so debris may fall into it and short the conductors.

Track lighting offers the most flexibility in locating and aiming lights. You can install track vitually anywhere, create runs and patterns of any length, Attach a wide variety of lights to the track, aim them however you want, and move them as required. Track lighting can support all four basic lighting functions: accent (which is most important), wall, ambient, and task. track lighting helps to set the mood of a home, as well as to provide functional illumination.
The Track System A track lighting system consists of track sections, connectors, power feeds, lighting elements (spotlights), and accessories. The track sections plug together with various connectors, forming straight runs or patterns, and are energized by the power feeds.
Diffferent Track Lighting Systems Conventional 120V track systems are the most commonly used. They used standard household current to power the lighting elements. They have most capacity and can support line voltage, low voltage, flourescent, and metal halide lighting elements. Low voltage track systems transform 120Vhousehold current to 12V or 24V, which runs in the track. These compact systems use only low voltage lamps. Variations include track, rail, and cable systems.
Track Sections Track sections come in various standand lengths: 2',4',8', and 12'. They can be plugged together to make longer lengths and cut to any length in the field.

Types of Track Lights
Other Line Voltage Spotlights
How you feed to the track depends on the location of the available electricity (typically a ceiling outlet box).
Line voltage spotlights use voltage lamps, chiefly PAR lamps.
Ring fixtures hold the exposed lamp from a yoke. Cylinders with round or flat backs provide some shielding for the lamp, but they are bulkier than many other styles.
The simplest method is to feed a live end, either directly or though a ceiling outlet box.
Power The Track - 2 When the outlet box falls in the middle of the track, use a saddle canopy feed , which fits over the track at any point ; no live end is required. You can also feed the power at a corner or other connector. Where there is no ceiling outlet, accord and plug attachment ( wired into a live end) will take power from a wall outlet.
Stems Track can be suspended below the ceiling using stems that attach to the back of the track. Stems are a seperate item supplied by each track manufacturer. Stems should be spaced no further than 4' apart. Stems can be shortened in the field and lengthened with the use of extenders.
Low voltage spotlights use low voltage lamps, chiefly MR16 and PAR36 lamps. Each spotlight also includes a transformer. Projectors (line and low voltage) create precisely shaped beams of light.
Decorative types include bell-shaped and theatrically styled spots.
Low Voltage Spotlights Floods and wall washers spread light out to cover a large area.
Universal Line Voltage Spotlights Basic lamp holders that can hold any medium screwbase lamp are often called “Universals” because they are not limited to a particular lamp or wattage. The lamp sticks out of the holder so it is mostly exposed. To enclose the lamp from view, you can attach cowls and shades to many basic lamp holders. Each cowl is sized to a different lamp (typically PAR20, PAR30, or PAR38). When used with a cowl, a basic lamp holder is limited to the lamps that fit with the cowl; it is no longer “universal”.
Low voltage spotlights chiefly use low voltage MR16 or PAR36 lamps. Low voltage lamps offer the best optical control and the most choice of beam spread and intensity.
Types of Low Voltage Spotlights Low voltage spotlights include a transformer, electronic or magnetic, which reduces the 120V current in the track to 12V for the lamp. Most transformers will drive lamps of 2050 watts. Some electronic transformers handle 42-75 watt lamps. Electronic transformers are lightweight and efficient, but vulnerable to heat. Most are housed separately from the lamp, which creates a distinctive appearance. Magnetic transformers are mostly built into the housing, for a more conventionallooking spotlight.
