IBM United States Hardware Announcement 116-042, dated May 10, 2016 TS7700 R4.0 delivers faster performance and larger maximum capacity with the new TS7760 offering to support business in the cloud Table of contents 1 2 2 2 5 6 Overview Key prerequisites Planned availability date Description Product positioning Product number 8 9 15 18 22 23 Publications Technical information Terms and conditions Prices Order now Corrections At a glance IBM TS7760 delivers faster performance and larger maximum capacity than the previous TS7720 and TS7740 offerings while maintaining the reliability and availability of the enterprise storage platform to support business in the cloud era. (R) TS7760 extends enterprise storage system leadership for System z virtual tape by combining the capabilities of the former TS7720 and TS7740 into a single offering. TS7760 is comprised of: (R) • TS7760 Server 3957 Model VEC • TS7760 Controller 3956 Model CSA and Cache Module Model XSA • TS7760 Tape Frame 3952 Model F06 TS7760 supports the functionality of the previous TS7720 and TS7740 offerings, while delivering these additional enhancements: • Dynamic Disk Pooling (DDP) for improved reliability and serviceability • Maximum repository capacity of more than 1.3 PB before compression • Support for connections to a TS4500 Tape Library Overview With cloud infrastructures on the rise and data volumes expanding exponentially, organizations need a cost-effective way to manage both primary and backup data that is active, inactive, or even archived. Long-term retention of data is a business priority, as is continuous availability from anywhere at any time, but the storage solution must also fit within today's budget constraints. Storing infrequently accessed data on costly disk storage simply doesn't make sense. At the same time, physical tape libraries can require long access times and high administrative requirements, making the use cost-prohibitive in transactional storage infrastructures. TS7700 virtualized tape storage delivers a solution to all of these issues. TS7700 Release 4.0 introduces the TS7760 offering which combines and replaces the previous TS7720 and TS7740 offerings. IBM United States Hardware Announcement 116-042 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1 IBM POWER8 (R) processor technology TS7760 Model VEC features IBM POWER8 server technology to help support high performance. Model VEC delivers significant performance improvements over POWER7-based TS7720 and TS7740 server models. DDP The TS7760 repository is formatted with DDP. The dynamic RAID functionality of DDP supports higher availability and faster rebuild times than the RAID 5 and RAID 6 protection used on previous TS7700 repositories. Increased capacity TS7760 Tape Controller Model CSA and TS7760 Cache Module Model XSA support an increase of more than 30% of the maximum capacity for a TS7700 cluster, compared to the maximum capacity of the previous TS7720 cluster. TS4500 Tape Library TS7700 R4.0 supports the TS4500 Tape Library as a physical tape automation platform. The TS3500 Tape Library is also supported. When connecting a TS7760 Server Model VEC with a TS3500 or TS4500 Tape Library, 16 Gb Fibre Channel switches are required. Key prerequisites TS7700 servers attach to FICON channels on select IBM System z servers and require the appropriate levels of System z software. (R) TS7700 R4.0 requires a minimum of 32 GB RAM. Memory Upgrade feature number 3462 is required on TS7720 Server Model VEB and TS7740 Server Model V07 before R4.0 machine code can be installed. 16 Gb Fibre Channel switches are required when connecting TS7760 Model VEC with a TS3500 or TS4500 Tape Library. Additional features may be required on the TS7760 components or automation frames. Refer to the Technical information section for details . Planned availability date June 3, 2016: All models and features except feature number 9339 for 3952-F06 August 19, 2016: Feature number 9339 Description TS7700 Release 4.0 introduces the TS7760 offering that combines and replaces the previous TS7720 and TS7740 offerings, building upon and expanding the capabilities of the earlier TS7700 offerings. TS7700 R4.0 offers Model VEC featuring IBM POWER8 server technology to help support high performance. Model VEC delivers significant performance improvements over the POWER7-based TS7720 and TS7740 server models. TS7700 R4.0 may be installed on TS7720 Model VEB and TS7740 Model V07 servers. The 16 GB memory upgrade is required on these servers before R4.0 may be installed. Dual-port 10 Gb long wavelength grid adapters are supported on TS7760 Model VEC, in addition to the dual-port 1 Gb grid adapters supported on TS7700 models IBM United States Hardware Announcement 116-042 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 2 V07 and VEB. The Enable Dual Port Grid Connections feature can now be used with the 10 Gb grid adapter to double the available 10 Gb grid links supported, compared to previous offerings. TS7700 grid support has been expanded to enable R4.0 systems to connect to grids with systems running two other levels of machine code, at R2.1 or higher. 16 Gb Fibre Channel HBAs are supported in TS7760 Model VEC, delivering increased bandwidth for connections to the disk repository and to backend physical tape. TS7700 R4.0 supports the ability to connect a TS4500 or TS3500 library with TS1100 family drives to a TS7760, similar to the support provided since R3.2 on the TS7720T. Enable TS7720/TS7760 Tape Attach and Tape Library Attach are required on TS7700 Server Model VEC to define a TS7760T. Fibre Channel switches must be installed in the tape library to complete the connection between the TS7700 and the tape drives. Model VEC server requires 16 Gb FC switches. These switches are installed in the same TS4500 frame with the tape drives, or in TS3500 Model TR1, and may be used with the TS7720T and TS7740, as well as the TS7760T. See Hardware requirements below for specific features required on the machine type 3584 libraries. Tape-attached TS7760 partitions Up to eight cache partitions, CP0 through CP7, may be defined in a TS7760T or TS7720T. Each partition has a customer configurable capacity associated with it. The capacity or size assignment will determine how much content of the partition will reside in disk cache. Each partition's capacity is managed independently using its own size restraints, and maintains a segregated LRU algorithm taking only into account those volumes assigned to that partition. CP0 will be viewed as the resident-only partition where CP1 through CP7 will be customer-sized tape managed partitions. The amount of capacity which remains within the disk cache after deducting the cumulative assigned capacities of CP1 through CP7 is the resulting size of the disk only residency partition CP0. Both PG0 and PG1 content will target a particular partition CP1 through CP7 and penalize only that partition with respect to capacity. Cache resident partition (CP0) The cache resident partition will always be present with a minimum size of 2 TB and a maximum size of the disk capacity minus the size of any configured tape managed partitions. The size of CP0 is calculated and is not configurable by the customer. The resident-only partition will be treated as a disk-only solution and all content residing within it will have automatic removal policy attributes associated with it. Pinned, retained, prefer keep, and prefer remove will apply to content contained within the resident-only partition. Tape-attached partitions (CP1 through CP7) Tape-attached partitions (CP1 through CP7) are only available when the tape attach feature is installed. CP1 is automatically created with a default capacity of 3 TB when the tape attach feature is installed. The customer can alter the size of CP1 and create optional additional partitions CP2 through CP7. The size of each partition is defined in 1 TB increments. Content landing in CP1 through CP7 will require a preference group assignment of PG1 or PG0 similar to the previous TS7740 offering. Hierarchical storage management manages the content of each partition independently. See IBM Knowledge Center and other product planning documentation for additional information on management and use of TS7760T cache partitions and associated concepts. TS7760T physical tape encryption TS7760T supports encryption of data residing on its physical tape cartridges. The same mechanisms for managing encryption used within the TS7720T and TS7740 are supported on the TS7760T. Feature #9900 is required to enable physical tape IBM United States Hardware Announcement 116-042 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3 encryption. Disk encryption and back-end tape encryption are independent of each other on the TS7760T, as they were on the TS7720T and TS7740. TS7760 disk cache and DDP The TS7760 disk repository is created from the TS7700 Cache Controller Model CSA and optional TS7700 Cache Module Model XSA. Each disk unit contains twelve 4 TB self-encrypting disk drives delivering approximately 31.43 TB of usable capacity (before compression). This disk repository is formatted using Distributed Disk Pools (DDP). The dynamic RAID functionality of DDP supports higher availability and faster rebuild times than the RAID 5 and RAID 6 protection used on previous TS7700 repositories. Disk cache encryption Disk cache encryption may be selected and enabled to deliver protection for data as it resides in the TS7700 disk repository. Options enable the user to choose encryption using externally managed keys, or using local or internally managed keys. All disk units in the entire TS7700 cluster must be encryption capable for encryption to be enabled. Cache Controller models CSA and CS9, and their Cache Module models XSA and XS9 are encryption-capable devices. The Cache Controller maintains the encryption keys when local or internal key management is selected. For external key management, encryption keys are maintained outside of the TS7700, and passed to the TS7700 from an encryption key manager. Only IBM (R) Security Key Lifecycle Manager (SKLM) and its predecessor Tivoli Key Lifecycle Manager will be supported. To enable TS7700 disk-based encryption using externally managed keys, feature #5276 must be installed on the TS7700 server, and feature #7404 must be installed on every 3956 disk model in the TS7700 configuration. For the TS7700 to successfully communicate with the SKLM servers, an X.509 encryption certificate is required. Beginning with this release, every TS7700 system shipped with R3.3 will contain a Public Key Cryptography Standards (PKCS) file using format #12, even if encryption is not initially enabled on the TS7700. Feature #9277, PKCS #12 File - Plant, will be included on each of these systems to indicate the certificate file is installed. To enable external key-managed encryption on TS7700 systems shipped prior to R3.3, feature #5277, PKCS #12 File must be installed before feature #5276, Disk Encrypt - External Key, can be installed. Clients using encryption with internally managed keys may convert to externally managed keys by ordering a feature conversion from feature #5272 to feature #5276. If feature #9277 is not present on the TS7700, then feature #5277 must be ordered when the conversion is ordered. Disk encryption using externally managed keys with SKLM requires software entitlements for every hard disk drive in the TS7700 machine type 3956 disk models installed in the configuration. For more information on SKLM, see the IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager website. TS1150 Prior to Release 3.3, back-end tape drives were required to be all of the same type and model. The TS1150 drive has sunset the ability to write or read Generation 1 or 2 media, including JA, JJ, and JB cartridges. Limited heterogenous tape drive support was included beginning with R3.3 in order to enable the ability to migrate data from those older generation media types to Generation 3 or 4 media, including JC, JK, JD, or JL cartridges. Beginning with R3.3, TS1150 back-end drives have been supported as the only generation tape drives attached to the TS7700 when Generation 3 and 4 media is used exclusively. Because the TS1150 drive cannot read or write Generation 1 and 2 media, the TS7700 will not go online if there is Gen 1 or Gen 2 media in the library with active data and only TS1150 tape drives are attached. One other set of machine type 3592 drive models must be attached along with the TS1150 drives when active data resides on Gen 1 or Gen 2 media. The combined maximum number IBM United States Hardware Announcement 116-042 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 4 of drives remains at 16. A minimum of four TS1150 drives must be present and a minimum of two drives from the previous drive generation must be present. All Gen 1 and Gen 2 media will be marked as read only. All recalls from Gen 1 and Gen 2 media will be directed to the non-TS1150 drives. All recalls from Gen 3 or 4 media will be directed to the TS1150 drives. All writes and appends will be directed to TS1150 drives. Previously written content on Gen 3 media which requires appending will be written by the TS1150 drives in the E07 format.
