TURNTABLES
Overview
T
he latest generation of turntables from Origin Live are the result of continuous development to ensure the realism and pleasure of your listening experience.
Reviewers and dealers welcome the decks as a significant advance over previous references. The public also voted the Origin Live Resolution turntable and Encounter tonearm “best sound at the show” at the prestigious and well attended KlangBilder show in Vienna. This was against very stiff competition from other high end turntables, not to mention all the other new format players. The “best sound at the show award” represents a tremendous body of opinion from an impartial and unbiased source. Highlights from magazine reviews include: The Aurora turntable awarded “group test winner” in What Hi Fi magazine. The Aurora Gold turntable won the coveted “Most
wanted component of 2004” award by Stereo Times magazine. This confirms the opinion among a growing number of reviewers who state that Origin Live products are simply the best in their class, or the best they’ve ever heard, period. The Resolution turntable reviewed in Strereophile
compared favourably to the editors reference deck which cost 4 times the price. The Sovereign turntable reviewed by Image Hi Fi
equalled the editors reference deck which cost twice the price. Too many people make the mistake of purchasing well known decks simply on looks or previous reputation without realizing the huge gulf that now exists in the sound quality of these decks compared to Origin Live decks. Reasons for investing in vinyl Origin Live believe, as do many experts, that vinyl records still represent the ultimate format for sound quality. This situation will continue for many years to come in spite of all the new “super” formats which continue to exhibit flaws. Not only is vinyl the best format available but you may have a decent collection of priceless records that you wish to appreciate to the full. The ultimate format deserves the ultimate player and this is what Origin Live offer at various market levels. We trust that you will be delighted to enjoy the benefits of ownership.

TURNTABLES
Overview of models Turntable Models Sovereign Top of the range, beyond compare, high end design. Extremely well specified - with utterly fantastic sound. Simply the ultimate deck.
Resolution One of the highest performing decks on the market regardless of price. The Resolution is radical, both in performance and fabulous appearance. So much so that it featured in a number of style magazines for it’s eye catching finish and sheer good looks.
Resolution Classic The Classic version of the Resolution is for those who prefer a more traditional appearance. The plinth is beautifully crafted from solid cherry wood. Performance is nearly to the standard of the Resolution.
Aurora Gold The Aurora Gold is really a slimmed down version of the Resolution using the same semi-suspended sub-chassis to deliver a much higher level of performance than the Aurora. This deck delivers world beating performance at a fraction of it’s true value.
Aurora A highly functional design that delivers unrivalled performance in the mid-market.

Aurora
“Swish looks; clear precise presentation; realistic vocals; full-bodied attack; thrilling dynamics.... A stellar performer with a wonderfully realistic presentation: if you can’t afford a £3000 CD player try this instead... The moment you spin some vinyl, the sound stuns. The Aurora gives vocals great solidity and excellent detail. This is what vinyl’s all about - close your eyes and you’ll believe the singers are in your room... delivers realism of the highest order. And tonal balance is spot on: the bass bounds along but never obscures the midrange or treble. Switch to Nirvana’s attack on the higher frequencies and the turntable remains unruffled and there’s no evidence of harshness. There is however proof of superb attack and rigid bass....dynamics are excellent, which means continually engrossing performances and edge of the seat listening. You also get a vast, room filling sound stage .. the sonic news couldn’t be better ... It looks like a star and sounds like heaven - a class leader in every respect”.
A
superb looking deck with performance to match.
As a slimmed down version of Origin Live’s award winning Aurora Gold, it represents unrivalled performance at this price point. The strengths of the Aurora lie in its superb transparency, coupled with tangible sound staging and imaging. It is very neutral and will suit most systems exceptionally well.

Aurora Gold “T
his is one of the few turntables I could listen to for days at a time with no hint of listening fatigue. It presents the music as it was recorded.... Pace is second to none along with precision and an extremely believable sound stage. Even with the least expensive pick up arm, this turntable projects an image that is frighteningly realistic.... Overall an extremely fine piece of engineering with factory support of the highest order. I can recommend this record deck with complete confidence.” HI FI WORLD 2004

inner of Stereo Times “most wanted component of the year Award 2004” in combination with the Illustrious tonearm.
“Simply stated, the Origin Live Illustrious tonearm/Aurora Gold turntable produce the best musical results of any turntable I’ve ever heard, regardless of price. Since I’ve been listening for turntables professionally for 32 years and am aware of the pitfalls of ultimate proclamations, I hesitate somewhat to make this statement. Nevertheless, it is true. The level of musical communication available from the Illustrious/Aurora Gold is in a class by itself. It sets a new reference. The overall preoccupation with stereoscopy and with sonic special effects of most High End record players pays too little attention to the core values of musical communication. Consequently I find these tables turgid, dissecting, prosaic and unable to dance: you hear everything about the sonic event except what the music means.....The most obvious aspect of the Illustrious/Aurora Gold is the utter coherence of rhythm, timing, dynamic variation, and musical phrasing. It’s articulation in the bass is simply unequalled. My long time reference for these qualities has been the Linn LP12. It is my reference no more. The OL combination outperformed it in every aspect of sonic and musical values, including the famed boogie factor” STEREO TIMES

to the $20,000+ version .....“The Resolution Modern works brilliantly, is well-built, and its price is right. But regardless of price, this is one of the truly special products I’ve reviewed in the past 18 years.” ($4,465 is for Encounter tonearm & Resolution. $20,000 reference is Michael’s Simon Yorke S7, Kuzma Air Tracking Arm, Sounds of Silence platform). “T
he trio (Sovereign – Conqueror – Lyra Olympos) made me forget the walls of my listening room. Fed by well produced records…you felt immediately transported into the recording location. But the three excel not only in spatial recreation. No matter if you play old blues records, grooving Jazz or big orchestras, the music goes straight under your skin. Even with the most exacting test records it was absolutely impossible, not to get caught up emotionally and to only analyse the sound reproduction. If there is program material the Origin Live loves most, it is fast and percussive music. Here the combination could present their speed best. In terms of speed, the combination not only gets from zero to one hundred in record time, but also gets back to standing in the same time. So much detail, so much speed, so much space and such a full presentation should be hard to get anywhere else at this price. For me ORIGIN LIVE in the analog sector is the discovery of the year!” REVIEW IMAGE HI-FI JULY/AUGUST 2004 NR.58, DIRK SOMMER:

Turntable design philosophy Introduction
M
ost experts agree that vinyl is still the world’s most satisfying medium for the reproduction of music. It reigns supreme in natural evocative music - and unlike CD, there seems to be no limit to the musical information that can be laid down on vinyl.
Much of the design philosophy and reasons behind the superiority of Origin Live tonearms is discussed in our brochure “System Philosophy & upgrading”. To save repetition, please refer to this first as it is an important introduction.
Concepts in design The priority of source signal purity
A
s records are played, the stylus undergoes tremendous accelerations in the record groove, being subjected to forces measured in tons per square inch! The movement of the stylus also creates vibrations that can cause unwanted resonances in the arm and the deck if they are not controlled. Controlling vibration is key to turntable design. It is hard to appreciate the significance of unimaginably small movements on the stylus needle. Because the movements of the stylus are so small, the output must be amplified around a 8,000 times to produce a suitable output at the speakers. This means that the slightest source of unwanted resonance is amplified thousands of times, resulting in distortion and coloration. It is the successful elimination of this unwanted vibration that results in the vast difference between mediocre decks and star performers.
Vibration is a highly complex area. Put simply, the following are the most relevant parameters from an audio point of view: Speed of energy transmission Speed of energy absorption - storage
of vibrational energy (resonance) vs vibration absorption (damping).
3. Resonant frequency of the material (how does it behave within the audio band?)
Performance objectives
P
erformance objectives may be simply stated as follows:
The turntable must rotate the record at a constant speed of 33 or 45 rpm, free from vibration
It must also support the tonearm in a
position relative to the platter, free from vibration
Controlling Vibration
O
rigin Live turntables overcome vibration by:
Minimising resonance within
components Reducing and isolating vibration
created by the motor before it reaches the platter or arm Excluding environmental vibration.
This can be caused by anything from loudspeaker feedback (groundborne and airborne) to underground pumps and road traffic. For example, the belt is decoupled from the platter by means of the sub-platter. A sub-chassis of some form has been found to be beneficial to performance, as it provides additional isolation for the arm and platter from external vibration.
Design of components
W
hat is the secret of the superb performance displayed by Origin Live decks? The answer lies in countless hours of research and development into the main variables governing sonic performance. Every design detail contributes to the sonic character of a deck. Meticulous attention has been paid to innumerable design choices such as:
Shape and form of components - solid, hollow, plate, flanged, tube, etc Sub-chassis decoupling methods,
- springs, spikes, elastic bands, rubber, foam, air cushion, etc Motor positioning and
method of mounting These critical areas and many others have been exhaustively tested to produce the outstanding performance of the Origin Live turntable range. The results are well documented in the many excellent reports we consistently receive from owners and reviewers.
Motor drive and power supply
T
he reasons why superior power supplies have such an audible effect on performance have been well documented - they reduce vibration and variation in motor speed - both of which have a huge effect on the signal generated by the “all sensing” stylus. What may not be so generally appreciated is that platters suffer a momentary slowing under load which is so small it can hardly be measured. Since, as we have shown, the cartridge amplifies this effect 8,000 times, it results in an appreciable loss of dynamic impact, especially in the bass region. To overcome this, some decks use a very high mass platter but this “solution” has its own drawbacks, producing a thick, clinical and lifeless sound. A better solution is to make the motor capable of responding powerfully and instantaneously to any increase in the dynamic load on the drive. This fully addressed by the ingenious circuit design of the Origin Live motor controller. The results are obvious with each listen.
