T MER by Carrier WHERE & WHEN ? • Only TV Explorer II+ (firmware v1.20 or higher) • Only for DVB‐T (COFDM) signals • Signal must be LOCKED (like BER, MER,…)
TOOLS MENU Key nº8 MER BY CARRIER
TV Explorer II
T MER by Carrier WHAT IS IT ? • MER measurement is an average value of the Modulation Error Rate in the Channel, which is normally good enough to quantify the quality of the signal • However, it can happen: The average MER is good while the MER of some carriers is bad. amplitude
‐ 2K system : 1705 carriers ‐ 8K system : 6817 carriers fc
7 or 8 MHz

TV Explorer II
T MER by Carrier APPLICATION : Detecting analogue interferences
TV Explorer II
T MER by Carrier MER by Carrier
This interference could not be detected in any other way for it can not be seen on the spectrum analyser and it is not strong enough to degrade the average MER, CBER or VBER readings substantially.

SPECTROGRAM
& MERGRAM
Two new functions exclusive to TV EXPLORER II+
TV Explorer II
T Spectrogram & Mergram WHERE ? • Only TV Explorer II+ (firmware v1.24 or higher)
WHAT IS IT ? • The Spectrogram function is a 2D‐plot of Frequency vs. Time, where the signal level is represented by colours. • It allows to easily monitor the spectrum and detect short perturbations, in a graphical way.
TV Explorer II
T Spectrogram & Mergram First, we choose the spectrum we want to monitor…

T Spectrogram & Mergram Frequency (MHz)
Using the encoder, you can place the Marker in any particular point of the spectrogram and read the level measurement stored.

T Spectrogram & Mergram Another example :
SPECTRUM (at t=0s) There was a signal break of approx. 6 seconds 16 seconds ago
SPECTROGRAM
TV Explorer II
T Spectrogram & Mergram HOW TO MAKE A SPECTROGRAM ? 1. Setup the SPECTRUM you want to monitor (Band, Freq, Span, Ref. level) 2. Go to SPECTROGRAM screen : TOOLS MENU
SPECTROGRAM
Key nº8
3. Go to the Configuration Menu to setup the monitoring :
SAVE AS : Name of the file where the measurements will be stored ACQUISITION MODE : Continuous / Bounded / Circular SPECTROGRAM TIME : duration in minutes (only for Bounded and Circular)
4. Select START on the Configuration Menu to start monitoring.
TV Explorer II
T Spectrogram & Mergram HOW TO RECALL A STORED SPECTROGRAM ?
From the Tools Menu, select the menu RECALL SPECTROGRAM and choose the desired file.
OR
Use the PC software NetUpdate v2 (Resource Manager) and transfer it to the computer in text format (CSV)
TV Explorer II
T Spectrogram & Mergram APPLICATIONS 1. “Low cost” spectrum monitoring Æ detecting short time interferences. 2. Making multiple spectrum captures in a period of time. EXAMPLE : Freq : 788 Æ 810 MHz (in steps of 0,20 Mhz) Time : 0Æ 6min30s (in steps of 6 seconds)
Sampling (for time and frequency) will depend on the SPAN selected in the Spectrum
TV Explorer II
T Spectrogram & Mergram And then... what is a MERGRAM ? It is the same as a SPECTROGRAM but using the MER by Carrier plot instead of the Spectrum ! COFDM Carrier
COLOUR = MER value
time
T Impulse response Detecting DTT echoes SOURCES OF ECHOES ¾ MFN : ‐ Reflections in buildings, mountains, hills,… ¾ SFN : ‐ Reflections in buildings, mountains, hills,… ‐ Transmitters not correctly synchronised
