InDesign CS6 Adobe® InDesign® CS6 is a versatile desktop publishing application that gives pixel-perfect control over design and typography. You can create elegant and engaging pages for print, tablets, and other screens. Detailed instructions for installing InDesign CS6 are available inside the Adobe InDesign CS6 User Guide.
Installing InDesign CS6 You need the Adobe InDesign installer, which can be obtained from the Adobe website. ■■
■■ ■■ ■■
Before you begin, close all applications currently running on your computer—including other Adobe applications, Microsoft Office applications and web browser windows. Begin the installation by running the downloaded file Select Install if you have already purchased InDesign, or Try if you are doing the 30-day trial Wait until the installation process completes An Adobe ID is required to activate InDesign CS6 software. You can create an Adobe ID during installation or sign in using an existing account created at the Adobe.com Sign In page. Trial versions of InDesign CS6 can be converted into full versions by entering your serial number in the Activation dialog.
After installing Adobe InDesign CS6, the next steps are to configure fonts, plug-ins, scripts and PDF presets.
The InDesign installation window
The following information is designed for system administrators with a focus on configuring InDesign CS6 for use with Typefi Publish.
InDesign CS6 1
Fonts Adobe InDesign supports OpenType, TrueType, PostScript Type 1, Multiple Master and Composite font formats. OpenType fonts use a single font file for both Windows and OS X and may include advanced features such as discretionary ligatures or extended character sets that aren’t available in current PostScript or TrueType fonts. When you install InDesign CS6, fonts are automatically installed into the system Fonts folder: ■■ ■■
Windows: \Windows\Fonts OS X: /Library/Fonts
If the installer finds older versions of these fonts it will move them to a new folder: ■■ ■■
Windows: \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\SavedFonts\current OS X: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/SavedFonts/current
Fonts can also be installed in the user Fonts folder; managed through a third-party application; or even placed within the InDesign application Fonts folder. Fonts installed in the application Fonts folder take priority over equivalent fonts installed in the user or system Fonts folder. In addition, the application Fonts folder on OS X supports PostScript Type 1 (Windows) fonts. Multiple Master fonts must be installed in the Fonts folder within the InDesign application folder. PostScript Type 1 (Windows) fonts are supported on OS X if they are also installed in the application Fonts folder.
See Using Fonts for more detailed information about fonts and InDesign. A complete list of fonts installed with CS6 applications is also available.
Plug-ins Adobe InDesign supports a rich plug-in architecture to extend and enhance its features. In fact, most of the features in InDesign are provided by plug-ins. Plug-ins are installed into the Plug-Ins folder inside the InDesign application folder. Typefi Publish Desktop installs several plug-ins for Adobe InDesign that provide the tools, dialog boxes and panels for creating and working with Typefi documents. The plug-ins installed by Typefi Publish Desktop are: ■■ ■■

For more information about Typefi Publish Desktop, see "Installing Typefi Publish Desktop" on page 6.
Scripts In addition to plug-ins, Adobe InDesign can also be extended and enhanced through scripting. Scripts can be written in AppleScript for OS X, VBScript for Windows, or JavaScript (ExtendScript) for either platform. The Scripts panel (Windows > Utilities > Scripts Panel) is an easy way to interactively run most InDesign scripts. Only scripts placed within the Scripts panel sub-folder are shown in the Scripts panel. The Scripts panel can also be used as a quick way to access the application or user scripts folder by rightclicking on the associated Scripts panel folder icon and selecting Reveal in Finder/Explorer
InDesign scripts are typically installed in one of two locations: application or user. Adobe includes several example scripts in the application Scripts folder to demonstrate possible uses, and Typefi Publish Desktop installs the Typefi Engine script into the application Scripts folder as well.

PDF Presets A PDF preset (.joboptions) is a group of settings that affect the process of exporting a PDF from InDesign. Several predefined PDF presets are installed with Adobe InDesign and are shared across Adobe Creative Suite components. PDF presets can be customised or created to match your production needs, and are installed in two possible locations: common or user.
Common ■■ ■■ ■■
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings Windows 7: \ProgramData\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings OS X: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings
User ■■ ■■ ■■
Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings Windows 7: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Adobe PDF\Settings OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings
For more information on PDF presets, see Exporting to Adobe PDF. Apple hid the user Library folder beginning with OS X Lion (10.7). To make it temporarily visible, hold the Option key while selecting the Finder’s Go menu.
Software updates Adobe releases security and product updates frequently for the entire family of products, including InDesign. Click this link to sign up for Adobe Security Notifications. The Adobe Security Notification Service is a free e-mail notification service that Adobe uses to send information to customers about the security of Adobe products.
Adobe updates The Adobe Application Manager (AAM) provides a straightforward and customizable automatic update mechanism for installed Adobe products. By default, AAM uses an Internet connection to Adobe servers to check for updates via the Adobe Updates service. Adobe Updates are also available as direct downloads through Adobe Downloads.
InDesign CS6 4
Rapid releases Adobe has historically released product updates every four to six months, but the Rapid Release program provides much earlier access every month or two. These rapid releases are made available to quickly deliver time-critical fixes through partners such as Typefi Systems, and while they have been tested there may be other known issues or additional changes before a rapid release build is made available through Adobe Updates. Typefi Systems provides customers with access to the latest Rapid Release build through our FTP site.

Typefi Publish Desktop Typefi® Publish Desktop is the single-user version of the world-class, leading automated composition solution Typefi Publish. Typefi Publish Desktop can fully automate the page composition of content authored in Microsoft® Word using Typefi Writer or in XML using third-party applications.
Installing Typefi Publish Desktop The installation process for Typefi Publish Desktop is similar for both Microsoft Windows and OS X. The following will be installed: ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■
Typefi Publish Desktop Server Typefi Engine for Adobe InDesign CS6 Typefi Designer for Adobe InDesign CS6 Typefi Writer for Microsoft Word (Windows-only) Typefi FileManager
Begin installation Before you begin, close all applications currently running on your computer—including Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Office applications (Windows-only). ■■ ■■
Begin the installation by running the Typefi Publish Desktop Installer After agreeing to the license agreement, choosing a Custom install is recommended to confirm that InDesign CS6 is properly detected—if InDesign is not found, the Typefi Designer and Engine will not be installed.
After installing Typefi Publish Desktop, the next steps are to initialise and setup the Typefi Publish Desktop Server.
Custom Setup ensures all features are installed
Typefi Publish Desktop 6
Initialise Server The Typefi Publish Desktop Server runs as a local web application. ■■
Open your web browser to http://localhost:8080 to view the initial setup screen. Note: Typefi Publish Desktop Server defaults to running on port 8080. If you want to use a different port, edit line 55 in tpss.xml (found at /Typefi/Desktop/Server/bin/tpss.xml), and then restart the Typefi Desktop Server service (Windows) or startup item (OS X).
In the fields provided, enter the locations where you want Typefi Publish Desktop to create its local filestore, database, and where XSL support files should be found. If these folders don’t already exist, the server initialisation process will automatically create them for you. ■■
Next, click Initialise Server
Then log into Typefi Publish Desktop. The default username is admin and the default password is admin.
Admin configuration
Initialising the Typefi Server
Server properties The Server Properties cannot be changed once the Typefi Publish Desktop Server has been initialised. The values displayed for Filestore, XSL Support Files and Database locations are read-only.
Script properties Advanced users can extend Typefi Publish Desktop Server events using scripting. There are three types of event scripts: Asset and Job scripts are command-line shell scripts that can affect files on check-in/out activities or immediately prior to or after completion of page composition, whereas Designer scripts are run within InDesign and can modify page contents during composition. Setting Job or Designer scripts via Admin > Script Properties affects all projects, but Job and Designer event scripts can also be locally overridden within a project’s Job Option. Entering global Script Properties that affect all projects
Typefi Publish Desktop 7
Designer scripts can be run from any location on your computer, but we recommend they be installed in the InDesign application Scripts directory. If they are installed here, enter the name of the script using a relative path. If they are not installed in the application Scripts directory you’ll need to enter a full, absolute path to the script. Note: In previous versions of Typefi Publish, OS X paths were separated by ‘:’ (a colon). That has been replaced by a ‘/’ (a slash) in Typefi Publish 6.
User management As a local server, Typefi Publish Desktop doesn’t require additional user account configuration. However, Typefi Publish Desktop does support multiple user accounts (licensing restrictions prohibit remote access; for true multi-user support upgrade to Typefi Publish Workgroup). Click the Add button to create a new user account. Administrator accounts have automatic access to all projects and cannot be disabled. Non-Administrator accounts have a choice between the simplified or full web interface and must be manually assigned as members of each project.
Engine management
Adding users to the Server
Typefi Publish Desktop ships with a default Engine Type configuration. If you have created custom Adobe PDF Presets you will need to edit the included Generic engine type.
PDF presets A PDF preset (.joboptions) is installed in one of two possible locations: Common or User. If installed in the Common location, it can be found in one of the following directories: ■■ ■■
Windows: \ProgramData\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings OS X: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings
If installed in the User location, it can be found in one of the following directories: ■■ ■■
Click on the Engine name to configure Engines and PDF Presets (Generic in this case)
Windows: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Adobe PDF\Settings OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings
Typefi Publish Desktop 8
PDF Presets must be entered in the Edit Engine Type screen exactly as they appear in InDesign’s Adobe PDF Presets dialog. For example, PDFX4 2008.joboptions is installed as a default (Common) preset and appears as [PDF/X-4:2008] within the PDF Presets dialog, therefore it must be entered as “[PDF/X-4:2008]” for Typefi Publish Desktop.
License management Typefi offers trial, development, and production licenses to match your organisation’s needs. The trial license is limited to output 200 pages.
Click the Add button to create new PDF Presets for existing .joboption files
To install the license: ■■ ■■ ■■
Click the Install License button in the License Management section (see screenshot) Open the provided filename.lic file using a text editor, such as Notepad or Text Wrangler. Copy the entire contents of the file and paste into the Install License text area, then click Save.
You should now see the updated license information under Summary.

Testing the Installation Running a test project is the last step of any configuration to confirm that Typefi Publish is working correctly. The success of a test project will confirm that Typefi Publish Server Console, Typefi Engine, and InDesign are operating normally. Test projects are also useful if doing system troubleshooting.
