Though undercounter refrigeration products have been available for years, U-Line
has taken modular refrigeration to the next level. U-Line’s Modular 3000 Series was designed from the ground up to integrate easily into existing cabinetry with a clean, modern, and minimalist aesthetic. Zero clearance and flush installation of the 18, 24, and 36 inch wide products is easily achieved with concealed and covered hinges, front ventilation system, adjustable and integrated toe-kick and door, and a rear leveling system that is adjustable from the front of the unit. What this means is a finished look that is sleek and consistent. Even the overlay-ready toe-kick is adjustable vertically as well as front to back to align with the cabinet toe-kick. (continued on page two)
U-Line (continued from page one) Beyond kitchen design and layout, the new modular refrigeration units feature the latest in sophisticated temperature controls and specialized food zones. Imagine a refrigerator unit that can be set to create the perfect temperature for select food types like; deli items, produce, pantry items, or a virtual root cellar. The same customized temperature setting also allows for perfect storage of beverages, from cold beer and soda to cellaring your prized wine collection. Modular refrigeration units can be placed anywhere in the home, which means they will suit storage and design needs while providing greater convenience. That is why U-Line has focused on versatility as a means of achieving design solutions. An example of this is placing a refrigerator pre-programmed for fruits and vegetables next to the prep sink in the kitchen island. This can be achieved throughout the kitchen with modular units of varying designs and can be installed in areas that previously seemed impossible. The new Modular 3000 Series models make it possible to build a custom undercounter configuration that meets the homeowner’s lifestyle and specific refrigeration needs – be it multiple cooks in the kitchen, entertaining, children in the household, or just additional quick and easy access to the most commonly used items. The 36” Modular 3000 Series models feature U-Line’s first dual-zone/dual-capability units. This is exemplified by the 36” Glass Door Refrigerator/Wine Captain® that puts a refrigerator and a wine preservation unit side-by-side. All of the Modular 3000 Series models integrate easily into existing cabinetry with a clean, modern, and minimalist aesthetic. These appliances fully integrate with overly/face frame cabinets, inset cabinets, and European/frameless cabinet styles, and they install seamlessly into standard 24” depth cabinet bases. All Modular 3000 Series products are available in a stainless steel finish or an overlay option that provides the simplest method of adding custom wood panels or frames for a truly integrated installation. Design features such as an adjustable and overlay-ready toe-kick, black interior with LED theater lighting, full extension storage bins and wine racks, glass shelves, and ergonomic touch controls add to the versatility and universal design capabilities of these appliances. The 3000 Series is exemplified by the U-Select™ Control system that allows users to choose settings that correspond to the types of food and beverages they store – keeping food fresher longer by providing the perfect preservation environments. Each mode comes with a pre-set temperature range and optimal set point that can be adjusted to suit the user’s preferences. The U-Select™ Control Quick Chill feature rapidly chills food and beverages at the lowest temperature setting in each mode for a designated period of time. This feature is available in all modes except Red Wine. Complete service diagnostics are also available via the U-Select™ controls and USB port.
Make Up Air Update -- A Universal Solution! The “leaky home” is a thing of the past; new homes are consistently being built more air tight to make them
more energy efficient. Proper ventilation pairs exhausted air (the range hood) with an equal amount of “compensation air” from the outside (the make up air system). This ensures that any exhausted air is immediately replaced.
Pennsylvania Building code now requires that any exhaust hood (for a venting cooking product) capable of exhausting in excess of 400 CFM shall require a makeup air system equal to the exhaust rate. Many townships are beginning to enforce this requirement during home inspections. Many builders are unaware of this requirement and have had to address this make up air system AFTER construction of the kitchen. This leads to costly retrofitting in order to meet code. It is advantageous to be proactive and plan for these systems before construction. While states across the country were developing their own make up air codes, manufacturers were left without an answer and began scrambling to develop solutions to meet this new requirement. Little by little, companies began to offer CFM reducer kits and Broan introduced their own make up air system that worked exclusively on their hoods. Though these new products did help certain consumers meet code, there still wasn’t a universal make up air system on the market. Not anymore.
Universal Make Up Air Broan has now developed a system that can be installed in any brand of hood and will solve any make up air issues. The MD6TU (a 6” round duct solution) and the MD8TU (an 8” round duct solution for larger CFM motors) are now available. This system is designed to balance pressure between inside and outside, while providing effective ventilation for a cleaner, healthier home. Broan offers a simple solution for automatic and controlled fresh air into the home every time you turn on the range hood! This is an interlocked, synchronized system that installs easily and requires only low voltage wiring to the sensor. This is perfect for new construction or retrofit into an existing home.
How it Works A sensor attaches to your new or existing duct work. The sensor detects when the air pressure changes signaling, that your hood has been turned on. This triggers the make up air damper to open, pulling fresh air into the home while the hood is exhausting smoke and odors outside. This system can be installed in conjunction with any brand hood and will fulfill make up air codes throughout the United States.

s a continuation of last week’s blog on oils, I thought I’d help clear up some confusion about olive oil. Everybody says use more olive oil in cooking, but what to buy? There are so many products in the grocery store with so many different prices. Individual brands are a matter of taste and there is no shortcut to buying, tasting and forming an opinion. And don’t we all LOVE to have an opinion? I happen to like “fruity” olive oil as my EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) and my current favorite is the house brand at Dibruno’s. Virgin olive oil is any olive oil extracted by the use of physical means (cold pressing), not chemical or steam extraction. Extra virgin olive oil is the first press and has an acid content of 1%. The low acid content has a better taste, but makes the smoke point lower. This is also usually the most expensive olive oil. Use this for salad dressings, dipping and finishing. Here’s where you want to splurge. Refined olive oil has been chemically treated to neutralize undesirable tastes and high acidity. It is generally of lower quality than virgin olive oil.

Pure olive oil (or regular olive oil) is usually a blend of refined and virgin oils, of no more than 1.5% acidity. It’s fairly tasteless. Light olive oil is a relatively new kind of olive oil. Through filtration, it’s light in color and flavor. However, the “light” designation does not change the calories or total fats. Light olive oil also has a higher smoke point than regular olive oil, so it can be safer to use in high heat cooking, however you sacrifice lots of flavor with this oil. Domestic olive oil is mostly grown and harvested in California; imported olive oil is generally from Spain, Greece, France or Italy. Look carefully, the bottling country may be prominently featured, but is not necessarily the country where the olives were grown. This will be listed too, but may be found in the fine print, so get out your reading glasses. Don’t buy olive oil sold in clear glass- this oil likes cool, dark places. Light deteriorates the oil. If you do not have a cool dark place for storage, store it in the refrigerator. It will turn cloudy, but as soon as it warms up, the cloudiness will disappear. Don’t stock up on too much during a sale of your favorite oil-shelf life is really no more than 1 year, even under ideal conditions. I learned this the hard way-somewhere out there is a landfill with several unopened $20 bottles of EVOO. Nearing the ideal flavor date was probably why it was on sale in the first place. In short, buy extra virgin olive oil for non-cooked or low heat items where the olive taste is a very important part of the dish. Virgin olive oil is fine for cooking. Buy the other oils at your discretion. For what it’s worth, I, personally, only have EVOO and Virgin oils on hand...but that’s just my opinion.

If I had to sum up BlueStar in one word, that word would be “power”.
BlueStar Ranges are powerful and offer one of the most powerful open burners on the market today, rated at 22,000 BTUs. That’s tons of power to sear a steak, keep a huge pot of pasta boiling nicely, or wok the heck out of a stir fry. Their ovens are some of the largest on the market and can fit a commercial size baking sheet. Not many appliance manufacturers can say that. Style is also important to BlueStar. That’s why in addition to stainless steel, you can get a BlueStar range (or wall oven) in 190 different colors and get a hood to match! If you think BlueStar didn’t “bring it” before (you’d be crazy to think that), they are certainly “bringing it” now with their French Door Range (FDR). Regardless of you purchasing the 30” or 36” range, you’re getting two 22,000 BTU burners. Unlike the traditional BlueStar ranges that rate their other burners at 15k, the FDR ranges have 18k on the other burners. If you are interested in the 36” Range, then you can swap out two of the burners and put in a French top, griddle, or grill. Clearly the most noticeable change to the FDR collection is the French door instead of a pull down door. Just like their walls ovens, these doors are dependent and will open no matter which handle you use (although you’ll want to close it using the left handle). This is ultra-convenient when you’re holding a roast pan or baking sheet in one hand and need access to the oven. Convection? Check. Gas Oven? Check. Super Capacity? Check. Awesome results? Duh, it’s a BlueStar. These ranges are available in some exclusive colors like Infused Copper; Statuary Bronze; Ginger Spice; Enchanted Silver; Enchanted Sand; and Matte Black, but don’t think that those are your only choices. No, no, no. You can still get this range in ANY of the 190 colors that BlueStar offers. Remember that you can get matching color knobs and knob trim on the range too! And just so you know your range was made to your specifications, BlueStar will laser etch your name onto a nameplate under the far right knob. We now have the Infused Copper French Door Range on display. It’s gorgeous!
