U9-11 Dribbling and Passing Coaches Session #1 With long-term player development (LTPD), this age category is critical in developing soccer players. There are no scores and no standings for leagues at this age. From a club perspective, coaching emphasis must be placed on skill and player development and not game tactics. Games are an opportunity to teach and focus on key aspects from session plans. Most importantly at this age is what the player can do with the ball as apposed to without the ball. To achieve this, a heavy emphasis in session planning should be placed on dribbling, coerver, fakes & feints, 1v1 situations, changing directions, passing & receiving. This builds the necessary confidence. You want kids to be as comfortable as possible with the ball. Always encourage kids to try moves in practices and games. Kids should never be afraid to fail. Failure is only a result from not trying! When teaching 1v1 attacking and changing direction moves it’s always good to start with: 1) No pressure; have the kids work on the fundamentals of the move in their own space to perfect it. Always train both legs, less emphasis on speed and more on completing the move 2) Light pressure; include a defender or static prop in situations to focus on progression of move and to gain more confidence. Defender jockey’s only and doesn’t’ attempt to steal the ball away. Emphasis should be on improving moves with more speed and explosiveness. An important aspect here is to ensure that kids are dribbling around the defender or prop 3) Game pressure; activities that utilize 1v1. Game scenarios where defender will attempt to steal the ball away. Important for player to incorporate speed into move Other key points and observations - - - Sessions should always start with juggling and dribbling touches warm-ups. Kids should be doing at a minimum 600700 touches on the ball every practice If you’re going to enforce one key point, it should be that the first touch is always control. Whenever you receive a pass, it’s very important to control the ball first. Kids can then make a decision to what to do with the ball (pass it, attack a player, change directions, etc…). Too many times kids are just kicking the ball away Having a proper training attitude is extremely important. LTPD does not mean we don’t train and work hard. The one thing I emphasize the most is that kids come to practice and train hard. Developing a good and sound work ethic is the foundation to developing better soccer players Always remember to make it fun! Kids love competition. Relay races are an excellent way to emphasize on activities and introducing a little competition Activity Attacking 1v1 Activity Dribble to and attack the cones (defenders) and use a move to dribble by and accelerate and move to line Opposite lines move in parallel Cones are setup for right foot; rotate for left Moves: Cut move; Outside foot; Lunge (fake) outside foot; Matthews (inside outside); Scissors Attacking 1v1 Activity #2 Two lines with even number players. One line starts with the ball. Player without the ball approaches middles of the field and player with the ball dribbles and uses an attacking move to beat the player who is only jockying. Once they beat the player the player passes the ball to the next person in line. Both players join the end of the line Moves: Cut move; Outside foot; Lunge (fake) outside foot; Matthews (inside outside); Scissors Zone Attacking Gauntlet Three zones with a defender in each zone. Those defenders CAN NOT leave their zone! Attacking player must attack and attempt to make it through each of the zones and out the other side with the ball. Requires controlled dribbling and different moves and fakes! Use a net if needed 1v1 line to line Pair up; each player on opposite ends of the grid facing each other. One person starts with the ball. Objective is to dribble from one end to the other. You score a point by stopping the ball on the line. Can use the entire grid! Changing Directions Warm-up 4 lines, each kid with a ball. First player in line dribbles the ball towards the cone and turns with the ball performing a coerver move to change directions. a) Inside foot turn b) Outside foot (hook) turn c) Pull (sole) back d) Cruyff e) Stepover turn and Rivileno Diagram Defender jockeys Pass Move to end of line Changing Directions Activity #1 Pair up. Each pair has a pair of cones. Player A (circle) starts at one cone and Player B (square) is at the other. Player A dribbles to the cone where Player B is and performs a turn move and dribbles back to Player A’s cone. Pass the ball to Player B and player B does the same. REPEAT Moves: f) Inside foot turn g) Outside foot (hook) turn h) Pull (sole) back i) Cruyff j) Stepover turn and Rivileno Changing Direction 1v1 Activity #2 Attacker (circle) tries to score on either net. Defender (square) tries to defend both nets. Encourage attacker to change directions of the ball to score to beat the defender. Players change lines. Encourage change of directions with one of 5 core change direction moves Progression: Force 3 change directions before player can score Progression #2: Include a second defender 1v1 using Two Goals Attacker (circle) tries to score on either net and Defender (square) defends both goals. Emphasis on using attacking moves and changing directions to trick and beat defender. Progression: Introduce a second defender Passing through cones (Warm-up) Set up a grid with 7-8 pairs of cones. These are marked as goals. Pair up with a ball per pair. Kids move around and must pass the ball through the cones to score. Keep track of how many goals. Dynamic Triangle Passing (creating space) Set up a grid with 4 cones and three players. The objective is that whoever has the ball, there is support on the player’s left and right (ie. Triangle). When a pass is made, the player without the ball and not receiving the pass needs to move to the next cone in order to provide support to the current player with the ball. Progression: Introduce a defender 3v1 Progression: Remove the cones 1. Dribble perform a turn move 2. Pass Creating Space with Goals Create grids, with a triangle in the middle of each grid (cones). 5 players per grid, 4 attacking players (circle), and 1 defender (square). Attacking players try to maintain possession while looking to score goals by passing through the middle triangle to their teammates. The defender is NOT allowed inside the triangle, and must defend by working around the outside of the triangle. Play to points or time, and then rotate accordingly Points: 1 pass through the triangle OR 4 consecutive passes on the outside 4v4 Possession Game Players play in grid and attempt to keep possession. Points are awarded in two ways a) make 4 consecutive passes OR dribble the ball onto the line 1) EMPHASIS: Possession!! Move to space and don’t be afraid to attack
