The player will view many pitches and make a splitsecond decision on to the type of pitch coming towards them. The game simulates a situation where a player is “sitting on a pitch. ” When the player sees the pitch they are “sitting on” he/she will quickly make decision to swing (tapping the screen) or when the pitch is not what he/she was expecting to not swing. The instructions are shown to the player before each session (Fig. 25). Each pitch trial has three components: 1. Cue and Countdown 2. Pitch 3. Feedback For each trial, the first component is the CUE and COUNTDOWN (Fig. 26). The CUE is a text box box with “FASTBALL”, “CURVEBALL”, or “SLIDER” written inside. The CUE informs the player about what pitch type to expect to see in the upcoming pitch trajectory. The COUNTDOWN is a circle below the CUE and is supposed to mimic the pitcher’s wind-up. The COUNTDOWN bar will shrink and when it finally disappears the pitch will be thrown. The PITCH will then occur. A baseball will be thrown towards the player (Fig. 27). The player will then have to make a decision on whether the PITCH trajectory matches the given CUE. If the CUE was “FASTBALL” and the PITCH has a “FASTBALL” trajectory the player should swing by tapping the screen. If the CUE was “FASTBALL” but the PITCH has a “CURVEBALL” trajectory the player should not swing or tap the screen. Players should perform this task as fast and as accurately as possible. Finally, the player will receive FEEDBACK on his/her FIGURE 25: PITCH RECOGNITION INSTRUCTIONS. uHIT User Manual 17 December 19, 2016 FIGURE 26: PITCH RECOGNITION COUNTDOWN AND CUE EXAMPLE. FIGURE 27: PITCH RECOGNITION EXAMPLE OF BALL IN THE AIR. performance for that trial (Fig. 28). A text box indicating “Correct”, “Incorrect”, “Correct, but late”, and “Incorrect, but on time” will be displayed given the players performance (accuracy and response time). It is important for the player to respond as fast and as accurately as possible. 13 STRIKE RECOGNITION GAME The Strike Recognition Game tests the player’s ability to call balls and strikes on Major League Pitchers. The pitch trajectories are simulations of real pitches thrown in an MLB game. Similar to the PR Game the player will tap the screen when they believe the pitch will be a strike and will not tap the screen when they believe the pitch will be a ball. Again the player is instructed to decide as fast and as accurately as possible. The instructions are shown to the player before uHIT User Manual 18 December 19, 2016 FIGURE 28: PITCH RECOGNITION EXAMPLE OF ”CORRECT” FEEDBACK. FIGURE 29: STRIKE RECOGNITION INSTRUCTIONS. each session (Fig.29). Like the Pitch Recognition Game, the Strike Recognition Game has three components: 1. Countdown and Strike Zone Display 2. Pitch 3. Feedback For each trial, the first component is the COUNTDOWN and STRIKEZONE display. Similar to the Pitch Recognition Game there will be a COUNTDOWN circle to simulate the pitcher’s wind-up. During the COUNTDOWN, a transparent rectangle simulating the strikezone will appear (Fig. 30). If a pitch ends within the rectangle it is considered a strike. If the pitch ends outside of the markers it is considered a ball. These markers will disappear when the pitch is thrown. uHIT User Manual 19 December 19, 2016 FIGURE 30: STRIKE RECOGNITION COUNTDOWN AND STRIKEZONE EXAMPLE. FIGURE 31: STRIKE RECOGNITION FEEDBACK EXAMPLE. Once the COUNTDOWN bar has disappeared along with the strikezone the PITCH will be thrown. At this point the player has to make a decision on whether the PITCH will be a strike (tap the screen) or a ball (don’t tap the screen). Again like Pitch Recognition, the player must respond as fast and as accurately as possible. After the PITCH, the player will receive FEEDBACK on their performance similar to the Pitch Recognition Game (Fig. 31). uHIT User Manual 20
