Opening Activity Using Word Play (Whole Group) Asking Permission • Ask students to think of things they would ask you for permission for...such as May I sharpen my pencil? May I borrow a pencil? May I go get my book? • Write what students say on the board? • Play Word Play. • Explain that may is a more formal – can less formal. • Ask students if they remember questions from word play. ª Replay Word Play to check answers. Introduce Video 22 - Helping Hands Do one or more of the following activities: • Ask students to explain the title, Helping Hands, in their own words. Have them try to draw or act out their ideas. • Show an overhead of Unit 22 from Crossroads Cafe Photo Stories B - page 141. Have students identify what they see in the picture and predict what the story is about. • Ask students to read the sentences under the picture. • Ask the question under the picture and list student responses. • Pass out an envelope containing sentence strips from Unit 22 Sentences Handout to groups of three or four students. Read one of the sentence strips, and have students select the correct sentence. Repeat until students have listened to all seven sentences. • Have students put the sentences in order. Volunteers from each group read the sentences, and the class decides if the order is correct. • Use an overhead of cut-up sentence strips to help students review and revise the story order. Video 22, Part I 1. Play Unit 22 video until Jamal leaves for his business trip. 2. Ask these questions: Who is going away? Why is the man in the café? (page 145, Crossroads Café Photo Stories B) 1. Continue playing Unit 22 video until the Culture Clip. 2. Ask these questions Who fixes the lights? What is Frank’s job? (page 147, Crossroads Café Photo Stories B)

Photo Stories B : Build Your Vocabulary – Page 157. • Students practice pronouncing and identifying the vocabulary words on the top half of page 157.
Worktext B: Your New Language
•Use the vocabulary words to complete the sentences on the bottom half of page 157.
•Select one student as group leader. At appropriate times have the leader review answers with the group using the answer key on pages 204 and 205.
•Work in groups of three or four to complete pages 118, 119, 120.
• Practice reading and listening to the sentences. Remind students the answer key is at the bottom of the page. Students that finish early may complete the Search Activity on Page 156 and the Picture Dictionary activity on page 158.
Students that finish early may answer the questions about Resumes on page 121.
Closing Activity – Whole Group • • •
Select some of the items listed on Handout 22-A Teacher’s Resource Book B, page 88. Add others appropriate for your students. Write student answers on the board. Yes, but…(please buy gas.) No, but…(be sure to come tomorrow.) Then have students work in pairs or small groups. One student starts the conversation, and the other one finishes it. Remind students that some responses are written on the board.

Crossroads Cafe' Unit 22, Helping Hands - Part II Review Word Play – Asking Permission 1) Ask students what questions they remember from the last class about asking permission. 2) Ask them three ways to ask permission – formal (may), informal (can), and do you mind if…. 2) Play Word Play.
Review Video 22, Part I Do one or more of the following: 1) Have students explain the title, Helping Hands. 2) Have students identify the characters in the story. 3) Show an overhead of Unit 22. Have students explain the picture. 4) Pass out the sentence strips from Unit 22 Sentences Handout to students and have them line up in order to read their sentences. Have class members decide if the story sequence is correct. Introduction Video 22, Part 22 1. Play Video 22 until Word Play. Ask these questions: Why is Jamal upset? Who is the new handyman? Crossroads Cafe Photo Stories B, Page 149. 2. Play the final segment of Video 22. Ask these questions: How does Frank help Jess? What does Jamal want Jihan to do? What was Katherine’s trick when she got nervous at interviews? Crossroads Cafe Photo Stories B, Pages 150. Divide into two groups:

Unit 22 Sentences Handout • Pass out envelopes with sentence strips from Unit 22 to pairs of students. • Ask students to put the sentences in the correct order. • Provide students with a copy of the Unit 22 Sentences Handout to make corrections as needed. • Ask students to copy the sentences on a piece of paper. •Students read their sentences to each other.
Read and Write • Have students complete the writing activity on pages 122 and 123.

Teach Intermediate students the agencies and what they do using Handout 22 - D Pair beginning with Intermediate/Advanced students. Intermediate/advanced students help beginning students match the agencies with the descriptions. Then Intermediate/Advanced students read descriptions to beginning students.

Unit 22 Sentences
One day, a man named Frank comes into the café. Frank is hungry and asks for some food. Everyone thinks that Frank wants to rob the café, so they put up their hands. Then they learn that Frank is not a criminal. He needs a job. Mr. Brashov gives Frank some work while Jamal is on vacation.
Frank is an excellent handyman, so everyone wants to help him get a job. Frank does not do week at his first job interview, but he gets one more chance.
After his second interview, Frank gets a job as a mechanic.
