Intended use
• Injury may occur if you do not follow these instructions. • The freestanding nature of this carrier is intended to be used only when putting a child into or taking them out of the carrier. Under no circumstances should a child be left in the carrier unattended. • When carrying a child in the carrier, the child’s head may be above your own. Be aware of overhead hazards such as low doorways or branches • Carrying a child in the carrier will affect your balance. Be careful when moving over uneven or slippery ground. • Both the adult and child harnesses have contrast-coloured safety stitching at critical points. Inspect these regularly to ensure the carrier is safe. • If the carrier becomes damaged, do not attempt to repair it yourself return it to a Kathmandu store. • Please follow these instructions and consult our in-store pack fitting specialists if you need further assistance.
Your Kathmandu child carrier is designed to safely and comfortably carry a child that can hold their head up independently and is not more than 100cm tall or heavier than 19kg. The harness and the child’s seat and harness need to be adjusted to suit each user to ensure safe and comfortable use.
Features • There is a mirror inside the righthand hip fin pocket. This is to aid in seeing your child when the carrier is on your back. • Inside the left-hand pocket is a pull-out mesh bottle pocket with shock cord bottle retainer. • Inside the main compartment there is a removable change pad and two hanging pockets that can hold a drink reservoir. There are also two side mesh pockets for nappies, etc. 1
Adjusting the adult harness The adult harness on the Kathmandu child carrier is very easily adjusted to fit different users. The main adjustment is back length. 1. Loosen the top stabiliser straps (Fig.2) and shoulder straps, then put the carrier on your back. Do up the hip belt with the top of the belt sitting on the top of your hipbones. Tension the hip belt so it is very snug and comfortable on your hips. 2. Now check the shoulder strap position. The top of your shoulder should be 5cm above where the shoulder straps bend away from the harness back panel. (Fig. 2) Note: On shorter users this point may be below the top of the back panel. Adjust the shoulder strap position using the central grey webbing found behind the lumbar pad. The pad is hinged at the bottom and held in place with Velcro and a stiffened tongue that tucks behind the back panel (Fig.1). Note: It may be easier to do this adjustment the first time wearing the carrier with the lumbar pad hanging open. 3. Once the shoulder straps have been adjusted to one user, mark the position of the buckle on the printed label (Fig 1). By marking each users buckle position, the harness can be quickly re-adjusted to suit each person. 4. Now start the final adjustments by tensioning the hip belt. It should be tightened so it is very snug on your hips and cannot move around. Note: If it is not tight enough, too much weight will be transferred to the shoulder pads. If it is too tight your circulation may be compromised and/or uncomfortable on your hipbones. 5. Check and tension the hipbelt side adjusters until the carrier feels stable against your hips.

6. Once the hip belt is adjusted the shoulder pads can be tensioned; stand up straight and tighten the shoulder straps. The shoulder straps should be snug and taking some of the load. Note: If they are too tight the hip fins will rise off your hips. If they are too loose the carrier will not sit against your back. 7. Once the shoulder straps are adjusted, move the sliding buckle (Fig. 2) on the top of the shoulder straps until they are on top of your shoulders. Tension the top stabiliser so the carrier is drawn against your body. 8. The last adjustment is the Sternum Strap (Fig 2). Clip the buckle together and adjust the height of the sternum strap by sliding both sides up or down. The sliding buckles that attach the sternum strap to the shoulder straps have a split in them. This enables them to be removed and repositioned in the upper or lower part of the slide webbing to suit the user. The Sternum Strap is properly positioned when the strap crosses your chest just below your collarbones. Note: Adjustment while in use may be required to alleviate any soreness. This adjustment sequence will give the optimum carrying comfort. To easily swap between users, loosen the top stabiliser straps and shoulder straps, then adjust the shoulder strap height as described above. Use the markings on the label behind the lumbar pad as your guide. Put the carrier back on, then re-tension the top stabiliser straps and shoulder straps to suit. 3
Adjusting the child seat and harness The child seat and harness need to be adjusted as your child grows or if another child uses carrier. Always make sure the child seat and harness are properly adjusted before securing your child into the carrier. Before putting your child in this carrier, remember that they must be able to hold their head up independently, be less than 100cm tall and not be heavier than 19kg.
1. With someone else to help stabilise the child carrier and hold your child, place your child in the child carrier. 2. Start by adjusting the seat height. Release the seat side straps (Fig. 4). Adjust the seat height using the seat height adjustment strap (Fig. 3). Pull the strap up through the adjuster buckle to raise the seat. To lower the seat, pull the edge of the adjuster buckle away from the strap to release it. For younger children, the saddle is set at the correct height when your child’s is resting against the headrest.

3. Once the seat height adjustment is complete, adjust the shoulder straps. Loosen both shoulder straps at the quick-release buckles on the sides (Fig 5). Clip the chest strap buckle together. Slide the webbing up or down and adjust the tension on the chest strap until the shoulder straps are comfortably held over your child’s shoulders.
Fig.3
Note: If the chest strap is set too low and loose, the straps can fall off their shoulders and your child can climb out of the harness. If the strap is set too high and tight, it may cause your child some discomfort. 4. Tighten the shoulder straps at the quick-release side buckles. The shoulder harness should be snug to provide a secure fit.
Seat Side Straps
5. The last adjustment is the seat side straps (Fig.5). Pull them in to adjust the position of the padded side fins. Your child’s arms should be inside the fins.

The padded cushions and head rest are all removable for washing. Clean in warm water with a mild detergent. Do not use bleach. Ensure that the cushions are completely dry before storing the carrier as mildew can develop. We recommend the pads are placed in a protective wash bag if going in a machine as the Velcro patches may damage other clothing.

Loading and lifting the carrier
Sunshade
Never leave a child in the carrier unattended as the carrier could fall over if on uneven ground or if the child moves. Always load your child with the carrier on flat level ground or on a floor. Place your foot on one of the webbing loops on the side of the carrier base to hold the carrier stable. They are designed for this purpose.
This carrier has a built-in sun shade inside a zip pocket behind the child headrest. The shade is fitted to a flexible plastic rod that twists in a loop to fold it away. Open the zip and pull the shade out. Untwist the shade, taking care that it does not flick your child in the face. Pull the shade tapes forward one at a time and hook the loops on the ends over the small plastic hooks situated by the top stabiliser strap buckles (Fig. 6). Use the small buckles on the edge of the sunshade to adjust the tension. Folding the shade away is a reversal of the above procedure. Once again, be careful not to flick your child in the face.
Either loosen the shoulder straps, or unclip one or both of the quick-release shoulder strap buckles. Lift your child into the carrier. Once your child is seated into the carrier, clip the chest together and tighten the chest strap webbing as described earlier. Re-attach and tighten the shoulder straps snugly. Never leave a child in the carrier unrestrained. Once the child is secure adjust the padded side fin straps so the child is as close as possible to the back of the wearers harness. This will bring the load closer to your back making the loaded carrier more stable on your back and easier to carry. Once the child is loaded and secure and the side straps adjusted lift the carrier onto your back. This can be initially difficult. There are several ways to make it easier: you can lift the loaded carrier onto a higher surface such as bench, table or chair and then turn around and put the carrier onto your back. Another option is to crouch beside the carrier and with one knee on the ground lift the loaded carrier onto your other knee. Pivot your torso to get one shoulder (same side as the knee that has the carrier on it) under the shoulder strap. Lean forward so the carrier is on your back and put your other arm under the other shoulder strap. You can now stand and secure the hip belt. If there is someone to help you, the front and rear carry handles can be used to lift the carrier up to a comfortable height with the child sitting in place.
Care Instructions:
The sunshade is removable for cleaning by unclipping the two quick-release buckles inside the shade zip pocket. Hand wash separately in warm water. Do not wash in a machine and do not remove the plastic rod. The sunshade is re-fitted by inserting the rod ends back in the sleeves in side the zip pocket. The ends of the sleeves are high-lighted with a contrast colour to assist this. Please note that the sunshade will not provide complete sun protection. Always make sure your child is well protected from harmful UV rays.
Fig.6
We do not recommend that you lift the loaded carrier by only one handle to put it on your back. It may not be stable enough. When the child is in the carrier, only lift it using both handles together.
