D E L I V E R Y A N D I N S P E C T I O N DELIVERY Each wine cabinet is carefully packaged to protect against freight damage. The wine cabinet is shrink-wrapped with corner guards, boxed and strapped to a custom pallet. If you purchase direct from Le Cache: Standard delivery fees include 2 men (3 men for the Model 3800 and 5200), lift gate-equipped truck, inside delivery to 1st floor or any floor accessible to an elevator (within 100 feet of truck), unpacking, debris removal, installation of the crown and base moldings (shipped in a separate box – Euro Series cabinets only) and door alignment with a total site time not to exceed half an hour. Additional delivery fees may be required if you are located outside a regular delivery service area, if additional men are required to safely perform delivery services to your location, or if extra site time is required to provide these services. Extraordinary delivery conditions – such as stairs, distance to truck greater than 100 feet, or difficult access – may also require additional delivery fees. The specialized carrier has been instructed to perform the following tasks upon delivery of your wine cabinet in your presence: • Unpack the wine cabinet; • Place the wine cabinet in your home in the desired location; • Align the doors; • Install crown and base moldings (European Country Series); and • Dispose of the packaging materials if you desire If you purchase from a dealer: Shipping costs, freight carrier and class of service are determined by the dealer unless otherwise specified. -4- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS Please note: the carrier is NOT required to install the door handles on your cabinet. The handles are shipped in an envelope inside the wine cabinet or screwed to the backside of the doors, and are easily installed with a screwdriver into predrilled holes on each door. Tipping the wine cabinet forward, backwards or on its side in order to get the cabinet through a doorway should not cause a problem. NEVER PUSH OR PULL OR LIFT THE CABINET BY ITS DOORS. DOOR REMOVAL If you must remove the doors in order to get the cabinet through a doorway, do the following: DOOR REMOVAL 1. Close the door(s), but do not lock. 2. Stand on a stool or ladder, and remove the top hinge plate by removing the three phillips head screws attached to the wine cabinet. Save these screws! 3. Lift the hinge plate off the cabinet (DON’T LET GO OF THE DOOR!). 4. Grip the edges of the door and lift straight up face of the cabinet until free of the lower load bearing hinge. 5. IMPORTANT! Look for and save any shim washers on the lower hinge brass bushing (used to equalize door heights). DOOR INSTALLATION 1. Check that the brass bushing on the lower hinge plate is still intact. Replace shim washers (if any) onto the brass bushing. 2. Hold the door by edges, square to cabinet, and let the magnetic gasket attract to the metal face strips. 3. Gently slide the door down the face of the cabinet until the bottom pin on the door engages the bushing. Make certain that the bottom hinge pin seats completely into brass bushing, and that the top horizontal run of the gasket has not snagged on the cabinet roof. 4. Re-mount the top hinge plate using the existing screw holes and screws. OPEN THE DOORS When cabinets are shipped in the summer, the rubber gaskets can become tacky and stick to the cabinet because of the heat. NEVER USE FORCE TO OPEN THE DOORS, because it will rip the gaskets off the doors. Instead, starting at one corner, use your fingers or a ruler to slowly separate the gasket from the cabinet. -5- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS INSPECT THE CABINET 1. REMOVE AND RETAIN THE SHOCKWATCH INDICATOR. Located on the front, right edge of the box, the SHOCKWATCH INDICATOR has a unique serial number that should match the bill of lading. If there is no shockwatch indicator or if the shockwatch indicator is red, you must note its absence or condition on the bill of lading. 2. Inspect the packaging BEFORE it is removed from the cabinet. If the cabinet arrived without the straps or without the pallet, please make a note on the bill of lading. 3. Though they may be tipped to enter into a room, our wine cabinets always should be shipped in the upright position. If the cabinet has been shipped in any other position, please make a note the bill of lading. 4. Inspect the packaging of the wine cabinet, looking for tears, holes, marks or other damage which may indicate possible damage to the wine cabinet within. 1. If you find damage to the packaging, please make a note on the bill of lading. 5. Once the packaging has been removed, inspect the wine cabinet for damage. 6. IF YOU FIND DAMAGE TO THE WINE CABINET, FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CLOSELY: 2. Describe the damage on the bill of lading. Be as detailed and descriptive as possible. 3. DO NOT SIGN the paperwork if the delivery men write that there was HIDDEN or CONCEALED damage. 4. Call Le Cache at 1.877.532.2243 or your dealer immediately (BEFORE the delivery men leave.) 5. Obtain and save a copy of all freight documents, including the Shockwatch, making sure that everything is legible FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN A DENIED INSURANCE CLAIM AND/OR BILLING(S) FOR REPAIRS OR RETURNED MERCHANDISE. -6- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS III. P L A C E M E N T O F Y O U R W I N E C A B I N E T WEIGHT LOAD FACTOR After loading your wine cabinet with wine bottles, your wine cabinet will be extremely heavy. When selecting a location for your wine cabinet, make sure that the floor underneath your wine cabinet is strong enough to support the weight of the cabinet. Model # Approximate Weight (lbs) Empty Total – Full Cabinet Bottles Cabinet Contemporary Series 1400 2400 3800 5200 320 385 475 510 516 858 1,374 1,866 836 1,243 1,849 2,375 Euro Series 1400 2400 3800 5200 Credenza 345 415 510 550 350 516 858 1,374 1,866 540 861 1,273 1,884 2,416 890 Modern Series 1400 2400 3800 5200 Credenza 320 385 475 510 300 516 858 1,374 1,866 540 836 1,243 1,849 2,375 840 Wine Vault Series 1400 3100 5200 280 385 460 516 1,104 1,866 796 1,489 2,325 FLOOR SURFACE UNDERNEATH THE CABINET Because of the significant weight of your wine cabinet, it is CRITICAL that your cabinet be placed on a hard surface, so that the cabinet remains level and the doors remain aligned. If you will be placing your cabinet on carpet, you will need to place a carpet board underneath your wine cabinet. You can purchase a carpet board directly from Le Cache, or have your local hardware store cut a 3/4 inch plywood board to the following dimensions (inches): -7- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS Model # Length Contemporary and Euro Series 1400 2400 3100 3800 5200 Euro Credenza Modern Credenza 31 39 48 58 74 71 71 Width 26 26 26 26 26 27 22 IMPORTANT NOTE: Much of the weight of an EMPTY wine cabinet resides in the doors. If your EMPTY wine cabinet is tilting forward when first placed on the carpet board, DO NOT over-compensate by extending the front leveling feet. Instead, load some bottles into the back of the wine cabinet until the weight is more evenly distributed and adjust the leveling feet so that the wine cabinet is properly level. The cabinet no longer should be leaning forward at this point. Additional adjustments may be required to level the wine cabinet front to back as the wine cabinet and carpet board compress the carpet underneath over time. CLEARANCE ABOVE THE CABINET – UPRIGHT CABINETS The heat generated by the cooling unit is ventilated through the top of the cabinet (except credenzas). Consequently, your wine cabinet must have sufficient clearance above the cabinet for the hot air to dissipate. If the hot air generated from the cooling unit cannot be dissipated properly, the cooling unit will be unable to maintain cold temperatures inside the wine cabinet and/or will run all the time. For our Contemporary, Modern and Wine Vault Series upright wine cabinets, you’ll need 18 inches of clearance above the cabinet, and for our European Country Series wine cabinets, you’ll need 13 inches of clearance above the cabinet in order for the hot air to dissipate. The space above the wine cabinet must be unobstructed – i.e., the sides, top and front of the wine cabinet must be open. In addition, the wine cabinet must be placed in a space that is properly ventilated. The cabinet cannot be placed in an alcove, closet or built-in space unless an exhaust system is installed to evacuate the hot air generated by the cooling unit above the top of the wine cabinet. In addition, access to the top of the wine cabinet is necessary to allow for periodic cleaning of the coils. -8- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS Model # Required Clearance Above the Wine Cabinet Minimum Minimum Height (in.) In warm environments, more clearance may be necessary to ensure proper ventilation. WALL OUTLET The cooling unit plugs into a standard wall outlet, and draws 3-4 amps of power. The cord extends 6 ½ feet from the back of the cabinet, approximately one foot below the top and approximately seven inches to the left of the center of the cabinet. If an extension cord is used, it should be at least 14-gauge wire, grounded, and as short as possible. We recommend using a surge protector. NOTE: IF THE WALL OUTLET IS DIRECTLY BEHIND THE WINE CABINET, USE AN EXTENSION CORD AND COIL THE EXCESS AT THE TOP OF THE CABINET SO THAT YOU WON’T NEED TO MOVE THE WINE CABINET IN THE EVENT THAT THE COOLING UNIT NEEDS TO BE UNPLUGGED. AMBIENT TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY The cooling unit can be set to provide a constant temperature between 48ºF and 62ºF; however, the maximum amount that the temperature can be cooled inside the wine cabinet is 25ºF below the ambient temperature where the wine cabinet is located. For example, if the ambient temperature is 80ºF, then the lowest possible temperature inside the wine cabinet will be 55ºF. -9- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS The cooling unit is not designed to generate heat inside the wine cabinet, so it should not be placed in an environment where the temperature drops below your desired wine storage temperature. The cooling unit is designed to reduce excess relative humidity to a suggested 50% to 70% range. While the cooling unit will not add moisture to the enclosed wine cabinet environment, the relative humidity inside the cabinet will rise as the temperature inside the cabinet cools down. For example, if the temperature in the ambient environment is 72ºF and the relative humidity is 30%, then the relative humidity inside the wine cabinet will rise to 60% when the temperature cools down to 55ºF. Ambient Environment Inside the Cabinet Temperature 72ºF 55ºF Relative Humidity 30% 60% If you live in a very dry climate, you can increase the humidity inside the cabinet by placing a sponge in a shallow container at the bottom of the cabinet. NOISE AND VIBRATION The cooling unit is designed to be ultra quiet and vibration-free. We also offer a more powerful cooling unit, which is louder and recommended for placement in extreme conditions, such as commercial establishments, and in remote areas, such as garages or basements. When the cooling unit is on, the sound emitted from the wine cabinet is approximately 52-54 decibels (“dBA”) for wine cabinets with the standard cooling unit, and 62-64 dBA for wine cabinets with the more powerful cooling unit. The following table provides additional points of reference measured in dBA: 40 dBA 50 dBA 52-54 dBA 55 dBA Library Refrigerator Breezaire 1060 Coffee percolator 60 dBA 62-64 dBA 70 dBA Normal conversation Breezaire 2200 Freeway traffic -10- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS IV. S E T – U P I N S T R U C T I O N S CABINET PLACEMENT Follow the instructions in the preceding Chapter to select a proper location to place the cabinet. In particular, make sure your cabinet is placed in a location where: • The floor underneath the wine cabinet can support the weight of the cabinet; • The floor surface underneath the cabinet won’t shift over time; • For Contemporary, Modern and Wine Vault Series wine cabinets, the clearance above the cabinet is 18 inches, and for European Country Series wine cabinets, the clearance above the wine cabinet is 12 inches. For all cabinets, the sides must be open and the room is sufficiently large and ventilated; • For credenzas, the clearance behind the cabinet is 3-4 inches, the sides are open and the room is sufficiently large and ventilated; and • If the electrical outlet will be located directly behind the wine cabinet, use an extension cord (14 gauge) that you can reach so that you won’t need to move the wine cabinet in the event that you need to unplug the cooling unit. LEVELING INSTRUCTIONS The first step in setting up your wine cabinet is to make sure that it is level, with all the leveling feet squarely on the floor and with the doors properly sealed against the cabinet. The wine cabinet can be leveled by turning the leveling feet underneath the cabinet. You can extend the feet of the cabinet by turning the feet CLOCKWISE (assuming you are looking down from the top of the cabinet.) Level the CABINET • Begin with corner feet touching the floor and center feet (if any) raised. • If the cabinet is resting on plush carpet, place a carpet board under the cabinet so that all the leveling feet will remain on the same plane over time. • Side to Side – Place a level on the top of the cabinet (not the door) parallel to the door. Raise or lower either side of the cabinet by rotating the feet by hand. On larger cabinets with six leveling feet, use the four corner feet only for leveling purposes. After leveling, lower the center leveling feet to the floor. • Front to Back – place a level on top of the cabinet (not the door) perpendicular to the door, and follow the same procedure. • If cabinet is level, the lock should work freely without force. Also, the door(s) should be even (within 1/4 inch) with the top edge of the cabinet. Additionally, there should be no gaps between the rubber gasket on the door, and the face of the cabinet. DOOR ALIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS Proper door alignment is vitally important to create and maintain an airtight seal inside the cabinet. Additionally, air leaks caused by improper door alignment will compromise the -11- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS environment inside the cabinet, and may create condensation along the door panels which eventually will lead to warping of the door. Follow the instructions below to properly adjust your door(s). Aligned Doors: Both Doors are on the Same Plane • If your cabinet has only one door, the plane of the top of the door should be parallel to the plane of the cabinet. If the non-hinge (i.e. left) corner of the door is higher than the cabinet, go to the BACK RIGHT CORNER of the cabinet and turn the leveling foot once CLOCKWISE, which will raise the right/back of the cabinet and lower corner of the front door. If the nonhinge corner is lower than the cabinet, go to the BACK LEFT CORNER of the cabinet and turn the leveling foot once CLOCKWISE, which will raise the left/back of the cabinet so that it is even with the corner of the front door. After adjusting the feet, open and shut the door, and check again to see if the door is aligned. • If both doors are not on the same plane (i.e. one door is higher than the other), use the leveling feet to adjust the doors. Start with the door that is too high (in the illustration at right, the left door is too high), and go to the BACK CORNER LEVELING FOOT on the SAME SIDE as the door that’s too high (in the illustration at right, go to the back foot on the left side of the cabinet.) Turn the leveling foot once CLOCKWISE, which will raise the left/back of the cabinet and lower the front left door. After adjusting the feet, open and shut the doors. Repeat the process until the left door is level with the right door. It shouldn’t take more than one or two clockwise turns to get both doors aligned. • If the top corner of a door is sticking out more than 1/8 inch, you have "top torque". If the bottom corner of a door is sticking out more than 1/8 inch, you have "bottom torque". To fix torque, raise the two center leveling feet (larger cabinets only). For top torque, go to the BACK CORNER LEVELING FOOT on the OPPOSITE SIDE of the torqued door and turn CLOCKWISE. For bottom torque, go to the BACK CORNER LEVELING FOOT on the SAME SIDE as the torqued door and turn CLOCKWISE. When the torque has been fixed (tolerances up to 1/8 inch are acceptable), lower the center leveling feet until they touch the ground. Unaligned Doors: Inside corner of Left Door is Too High -12- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS CROWN AND BASE MOLDING INSTRUCTIONS – EURO SERIES WINE CABINETS For European Country wine cabinets, the crown and base molding is shipped in a separate box. To attach the molding, do the following: - - Adjust the leveling feet below the cabinet until it is level and the doors are aligned Place the base molding (3-sided) on the floor in front of the cabinet Align the sides of the base molding with the tracks on the bottom of the wine cabinet, and gently slide the molding back until it comes to a stop. It may be necessary to tilt up the front of the wine cabinet in order to install the base molding.. If the base molding won’t slide into place, you may need to extend all the leveling feet an equal amount to raise the wine cabinet while maintaining the alignment of the doors. Remove the crown molding and place it on the top of the wine cabinet. The hinges should seat in the slots underneath the molding. For European Country Series wine cabinets, you may use the screws (included in the envelope hanging from the racks) to secure the crown molding to the cabinet. The screws should be used to attach the metal brackets on the molding into the top of the cabinet. -13- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS CREDENZA TOP AND BASE MOLDING INSTRUCTIONS – EURO SERIES CREDENZAS For European Country credenzas, the crown and base molding is shipped in a separate box. To attach the molding, do the following: - - Adjust the leveling feet below the credenza until it is level and the doors are aligned Align the sides of the base molding with the tracks on the bottom of the wine cabinet, and gently slide the molding back until it comes to a stop. It may be necessary to tilt up the front of the wine cabinet in order to install the base molding.. If the base molding won’t slide into place, you may need to extend all the leveling feet an equal amount to raise the wine cabinet while maintaining the alignment of the doors. Remove the credenza top and place it on the top of the credenza. The holes in the top should be aligned with the holes in the credenza Place a washer on each bolt, and from inside the credenza, insert the bolts through the holes in the ceiling of the credenza, and use the allen key to fasten the bolts to the credenza top. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. -14- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS V. O P E R A T I N G I N S T R U C T I O N S DOOR INSTRUCTIONS We recommend keeping the doors locked when the cabinet is not in use. By keeping the doors locked, you will ensure that you have a tight seal between the cabinet doors and the cabinet itself, and will help prevent the possibility of the door becoming warped over time. COOLING UNIT You may plug in the cooling unit immediately. On initial start-up, the cooling unit will reduce the temperature inside the wine cabinet slowly. The unit may run constantly or cycle off for short periods. The time required to reach the desired temperature will vary, depending on the ambient environment and the number of bottles placed inside the cabinet. When the cooling unit is first plugged in, the number on the digital display will indicate the ambient temperature inside the cabinet. Within a few minutes, the interior fans should begin running, with air flowing out from the discharge grill located on the left underside of the cooling unit. NOTE: The cooling unit cannot create heat inside the cabinet. The desired temperature can be changed by pressing and holding the “SET” button while at the same time pressing either the “COOLER” or “WARMER” button. When the “SET” button is pressed, the readout will automatically change and display the current set point. Inside Air Intake We recommend that you set the thermostat setting to 60ºF for the first 24 hours. Then, lower the temperature one degree at a time, each time waiting until the cooling unit cycles on and off before lowering the temperature again. Remember to keep the top 3-4 rows (front only) in the column directly below the cold-air discharge free of bottles so that the cold air can circulate freely within the wine cabinet A thermostat is located on the front of the Inside Air Intake (see picture), just behind the grill. During normal operation, the LED readout will display the temperature of the air entering the Inside Air Intake via this intake air sensor. When the optional bottle probe is installed, the intake air sensor is disconnected and the temperature from the probe is displayed. The display temperature is used by the control system to turn the cooling unit on and off. Because heat rises, the top of the cabinet will be the first area inside the cabinet to warm up, so the display temperature will register the warmest part of the sealed cabinet environment. During normal operation, the cooling unit will turn on when the display temperature reaches 2ºF ABOVE your set point, and will turn off when the display temperature reaches 2ºF LOWER than your set point. For example, if your set point is 55ºF, the cooling unit will turn on when the temperature reaches 57ºF, and will turn off when the temperature reaches 53ºF. The fluctuation in AIR temperature, which occurs primarily at the top of the cabinet, results in a LIQUID temperature fluctuation of less than ½ºF. -15- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS If the operation of the cooling unit is interrupted by a power outage or by raising the set point temperature while the unit is running, the cooling unit’s internal delay will be activated and will not restart for approximately three minutes. This delay may also occur on initial power-up. The cooling unit can cool up to a maximum of 25ºF below the temperature of the air entering the coils (located at the top of the wine cabinet). If the cooling unit never turns off or cannot reach the desired set point, you may need to lower the temperature in the ambient environment, increase the air circulation or raise the set-point temperature inside the cabinet. See the chapter on TROUBLESHOOTING below for more information. Once the “SET” button has been released, the digital display will return to displaying the ambient temperature inside the cabinet. In 3 to 5 minutes, the compressor will engage to begin the cooling cycle. The cycle will continue until the “SET” temperature has been achieved, at which time the unit will shut off. COOLING UNIT PROTECTION MECHANISM The cooling unit is equipped with a safety system, which will turn off the compressor if the temperature inside the cabinet exceeds 70°F. The safety system is activated 45 minutes after the unit is plugged in. If the cabinet temperature is not reduced to below 65°F within 45 minutes, the compressor will turn itself off and/or the fan will run but not blow cold air. You may also see a lit decimal point in the lower right corner of the display. If this happen, reset the cooling unit as follows: • Unplug the cooling system, wait 5 minutes and then reconnect it to the outlet; • Change the temperature set-point to 60°F; • Turn the light on and off; • Close the cabinet doors for at least 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, open the cabinet doors and check the temperature on the display. temperature is still above 65°F, you will need to unplug the unit and repeat the procedure. If the OPTIONAL BOTTLE PROBE INSTRUCTIONS If the cabinet will be placed in a non-temperature controlled environment or will be used in a commercial establishment, we recommend using a bottle probe (sold separately) to regulate the cooling unit. To use a bottle probe, start by filling a clean, empty wine bottle with 1/2 water and 1/2 isopropyl alcohol – this is called the control bottle. Insert the probe into the control bottle so that the cork fits snugly with no leaks. Then, place the control bottle near the largest mass of bottles stored, and plug the jack into the marked receptacle on the face of the cooling unit. The cooling unit will now be regulated by the temperature of the liquid in the control bottle. At any time, the cooling unit can be returned to "AIR" sensing by removing the bottle probe jack from the cooling unit. -16- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS VI. BOTTLE STORAGE TIPS To achieve the best results with your Le Cache Premium Wine Cabinet, follow the recommendations below when loading and storing bottles: • LEAVE THE COOLING UNIT UNPLUGGED WHEN YOU FIRST LOAD YOUR BOTTLES. • Start storing bottles in the center of the cabinet, and enlarge the "circle" as you add bottles to the cabinet. This will minimize temperature fluctuations by creating a thermal mass of bottles in the center of the cabinet, and will reduce the number of cooling cycles required by the cooling system. • Once the cabinet is loaded, plug in the cooling unit and set the temperature to 60 degrees. We recommend leaving the temperature setting at 60 degrees until the cooling unit gets in the habit of cycling on and off. Generally, the cooling unit will run 30-40 minutes in a given hour. • Always try to maintain an "airflow path" by keeping the top 3-4 rows empty of bottles in the column directly below the cold-air discharge (front column only), which is located on the left side underneath the cooling system. This will allow cold air to freely circulate inside the cabinet, and will allow your cooling system to operate more efficiently. • Our wine racks are designed to hold bottles “double-deep.” Generally, both bottles should be loaded with the cork facing the door. Most collectors load the same wines together in a slot, so that they know which wines are in the back. • Some wine bottles (e.g. German Rieslings) are extra-long and won’t fit double-deep in our racks. When storing long bottles, they should be loaded with shorter bottles so that the door can close properly. • Split bottles (375ml) are thin and can slip through the racks without additional support. To store split bottles, we recommend using postal tubes in the racks where the splits will be placed. • Most large-format bottles should fit inside our wine cabinet racks. However, some bottles are too big and will need to be stored in the bulk storage area at the top of the racks. Our racks have been designed so that bottles can be stacked on top of each other in the bulk storage area. • Temperature fluctuations inside the wine cabinet vary the LEAST in the bottom two-thirds of the cabinet, and temperatures in the back of the cabinet fluctuate less than in front of the cabinet. Therefore, it is advisable to store the most expensive wine bottles in the back / bottom two-thirds of the wine cabinet. -17- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS V I I. M A I N T E N A N C E I N S T R U C T I O N S FURNITURE FINISH The finish on your wine cabinet is protected by two coats of high-grade sealant. To prevent drying and maintain the finish on your cabinet, use a soft rag and high-quality furniture polish periodically to polish the wine cabinet. If you find white wax reappearing on your wine cabinet, use an ammonia-based cleaner liberally to remove the wax, followed by Pledge to protect the finish. This process may need to be repeated several times to completely eliminate the wax. COOLING UNIT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CLEAN THE FRESH AIR INTAKE GRILLE AND COILS PERIODICALLY, IDEALLY 3-4 TIMES A YEAR. CLEAN MORE OFTEN IN HI-TRAFFIC OR DUSTRY AREAS, OR IF YOU HAVE PETS. The Fresh Air Intake Grille can be accessed from the Top View top of the wine cabinet (beginning in 2005, all upright Le Cache wine cabinets) or behind the wine cabinet (credenza wine cabinets, and most wine cabinets sold before 2005.) Front For best results, use a brush attachment with your vacuum cleaner to remove built up lint and dust on the Back grille. If you need to lie across the top of the cabinet, the wine cabinet will support your weight. After cleaning the grille, follow the same instructions to clean the coils. You’ll need to remove the grille in order to clean the coils. (If your cabinet has two grilles on top of the wine cabinet, the coils can be found behind the grille that runs parallel to the back of the wine cabinet.) -18- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS VIII. TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE SYMPTOM WHAT’S HAPPENING WHAT TO DO My wine cabinet is leaning forward, even when it is placed on a carpet board When the wine cabinet is empty, the door(s) of the wine cabinet represent a disproportionate share of the wine cabinet weight. Thus, when an empty wine cabinet is first placed on carpet, it may lean forward even though the wine cabinet is placed on a carpet board. DO NOT over-compensate by extending the front leveling feet. Instead, load some bottles into the back of the wine cabinet until the weight is more evenly distributed. The cabinet should no longer be leaning forward at this point. Additional adjustments may be required to level the wine cabinet front to back as the cabinet board compresses the carpet underneath over time. My wine cabinet has been delivered, but I can’t open the door(s) When wine cabinets are shipped in the summer and/or through hot climates, the heat can cause the rubber gaskets to become tacky and the doors will stick to the cabinet. DO NOT USE FORCE TO OPEN THE DOORS, because it will rip the gaskets off the doors. Instead, starting at one corner, use your fingers or a ruler to slowly separate the gasket from the wine cabinet. My cabinet door(s) are not aligned with each other, and/or the corner(s) are sticking out The leveling feet need to be adjusted to balance the doors and “untorque” the wine cabinet. Please follow the leveling instructions detailed in Chapter IV I can't insert my key into the lock because the notches aren't lined up. To insert the key into the lock, the tab on the key requires the inner notch to be lined up with one of the two outer notches. If the inner and outer notches in the lock become misaligned, you'll need to file off the tab on the key. Once the tab is filed off, you'll be able to insert the key into the lock. The cooling unit is blowing cold air, but the digital display reads “88” degrees. When the fluorescent light is “on”, the digital display appears to read “88” degrees. Read the digital display with the fluorescent light off. -19- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS SYMPTOM My wine cabinet doors aren't sealing properly WHAT’S HAPPENING WHAT TO DO If the wine cabinet is not level and/or the doors are not aligned, the doors will not seal properly against the cabinet. The best way to check the door seals is by placing a flashlight inside the cabinet and aiming it at the door. Then, close the door. If there are any gaps and the light shines through, the door is not sealing properly. Another way to check the seals is by closing each door on a dollar bill around the perimeter of each door. It should be difficult to slide the bill along the edge of the door without pulling out the bill. 1. Make sure the cabinet is level and the doors are aligned (refer to Chapter IV) 2. Check to see that the hinges aren't bent. The hinge pins (attached to the top and bottom of each door) should be perfectly upright, and the hinge plates (attached to the top and the bottom of the wine cabinet) should be perfectly parallel to the floor. 3. Check to see if the door(s) are bowed using a long straightedged object (e.g. a yardstick), 4. If there is a kink in the rubber gasket on the door, use a hair dryer for several minutes and stretch the gasket into the proper shape. Then, close the doors for several hours to allow the gasket to regain its proper shape. If your hinges are bent or your door(s) are bowed, please call Le Cache at 1.877.532.2243 for further assistance. -20- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS SYMPTOM My cooling unit won’t turn on and/or My cooling unit turns off after 45 minutes. Because liquid temperatures change more slowly, the bottle probe will help override the protection mechanism during hot weather conditions. 4. If the cabinet doors have glass windows and the wine cabinet is located in a garage or an "extreme" environment, consider placing insulation on the cabinet windows during hot weather conditions to reduce the transfer of heat through the windows. If you continue to have problems, please submit the Breezaire Inquiry Form on our website -21- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS SYMPTOM WHAT’S HAPPENING The cooling unit is running too much, either because the coils haven’t been cleaned or because the ambient and/or environment is too warm My cooling unit won’t and/or the temperature setting on the cooling unit is too low, get below 59/60/61 which may create condensation degrees on the center post and/or locks of the wine cabinet. and/or Condensation also can occur In Water is condensing warm, humid environments. on the center post and/or lock of my wine cabinet, and/or My cooling unit is running all the time WHAT TO DO 1. Raise the temperature setpoint to 59 degrees or above. 2. Build the thermal mass inside the cabinet to reduce the cycle time spent cooling empty space. If you don't have enough wine bottles, use soda cans, water bottles. 3. Clean your condenser coils. 4. Keep the first 3-4 rows clear in the column directly below the cold-air discharge (front column only). This will stop the cold air from "splashing" against the center post. 5. Remove the grills atop the cabinet. 6. Check the seals between the door(s) and the cabinet to ensure there aren't any leaks in the seals. 7. If possible, cool down the ambient environment (but if using a fan, avoid blowing air at the wine cabinet, which will worsen the problem). 8. If you're using a bottle probe, discontinue use until the temperature cools down. 9. If the condensation is coming into contact with wood, wipe it away frequently to prevent damage to wood surfaces and warping of the door(s) If you continue to have problems, please contact Le Cache at 1.877.532.2243 and we'll send to you a strip of insulation for the post and a sleeve for the lock (these won’t work unless the steps above are implemented). -22- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS SYMPTOM WHAT’S HAPPENING WHAT TO DO My wine cabinet is having condensation on the glass. Condensation usually occurs in warm, humid locales, especially when the cooling unit is running a high percentage of the time. However, condensation on the glass may indicate a break in the seal that should be addressed. 1. Raise the temperature setpoint to 59 degrees or above. 2. Keep the first 3-4 rows clear in the column directly below the cold-air discharge (front column only). This will stop the cold air from "splashing" against the center post. 3. Check the seals between the door(s) and the cabinet to ensure there aren't any leaks in the seals. If you continue to have condensation on the glass, please contact Le Cache at 1.877.532.2243 for further assistance. The cooling unit isn’t producing cold air The cooling unit cannot produce air that is 25°F colder than the ambient temperature. Therefore, if the ambient temperature is 80 - 85°F, your cooling unit will not be able to blow colder than 55 - 60°F. Good airflow through the condenser coils is essential to the performance of the cooling unit. The coils have fins, with small gaps between them. The gaps, over time, can become clogged with airborne dust and lint. This condition will impede heat transfer through the coils, which will result in the unit running for long periods to reach the desired temperature. If the ambient environment is too warm, you’ll need to move your wine cabinet to a cooler location Otherwise, unplug the cooling unit, remove the grill that covers the top of the cooling unit (some cabinets do not have grills), and use a stiff brush, a vacuum brush attachment or compressed air to remove all visible dust and dirt in the coils of the cooling unit. Also, clean the grill before reattaching to the cabinet. Plug the unit back into the wall. If the cooling unit still cannot produce cool air after cleaning the coils, it is likely that the cooling system has lost its refrigerant. In this event, contact us to have your cooling unit serviced or replaced. -23- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS SYMPTOM My cooling unit is icing up and/or My cooling unit makes a loud clattering noise WHAT’S HAPPENING WHAT TO DO 1. Lower the temperature incrementally over the next few days until the desired cabinet temperature is reached. If the cooling unit continues to ice up, the cooling unit is losing its refrigerant. In this event, contact us at 1.877.532.2243 for further assistance. -24- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS SYMPTOM My cooling unit is dripping onto my bottles. WHAT’S HAPPENING WHAT TO DO The cooling unit removes excess moisture inside the cabinet, which collects in the drip pan of the cooling unit, and may need to be drained. Excess moisture can occur when the cooling unit runs constantly, when the temperature setting is too low relative to the ambient environment, and/or when a bad seal exists between the cabinet and the door(s). 1. Unplug the cooling unit. 2. On the underside of the cooling unit is a black drain plug, about 3” back and 4” over from the right hand corner. Rest a shallow dish or pie tin on the racks below the cooling unit, pull the drain plug, and drain out the water. 3. Return drain-plug and restore power to the unit. 4. Raise the temperature setpoint of the cooling unit. 5. Check the seals to make sure that the doors are sealing properly against the wine cabinet. 6. Read our troubleshooting guide to see why the cooling unit is running constantly, and for instructions how to reduce cycle times. If the cooling unit continues to drip, contact us at 1.877.532.2243 for further assistance. The display on my cooling unit is showing very low (01 or 03) or very high (98 or 99) numbers, even though the cooling unit is blowing cold air. The software in the control panel may need to be reset, or replaced. To reset the control panel, unplug the cooling unit and leave off for half an hour, and then plug the cooling unit back into the outlet. If the control panel does not operate properly after being reset, please call Le Cache at 1.877.532.2243 to arrange for the replacement of your control panel. -25- LE CACHE PREMIUM WINE CABINETS IX.
