PLATINUM II : DESIGN GOALS
DESIGN GOALS ?
•
Smoother High frequency delivery – whilst maintaining clarity and detail
•
Mid / High Frequency drivers closer together to improve integration and off-axis listening
•
Improve power handling and reliability – particularly High Frequency
•
Reduce distortion levels across entire frequency range
•
Improve bass driver technology, consistency and pair matching
•
Better bass damping, whilst improving extension
•
Higher impedance - improving system matching
•
Reduce effects of grille - on or off
•
Create new IP and take control of whole design to ensure everything is unique and bespoke to Monitor Audio
•
Flat, uniform and natural sound – un influenced by competitors.
•
Smoother aesthetics – screw-less front
PLATINUM II : MODEL LINE-UP
PLATINUM II : SOLUTIONS
HOW DID WE ACHIEVE OUR GOALS ?
1. MPD (MICRO PLEATED DIAPHRAGM) HIGH FREQUENCY TRANSDUCER 2. BASS / MID-RANGE DRIVERS 3. SYSTEM DESIGN
PLATINUM II : FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES
1. MPD (MICRO PLEATED DIAPHRAGM) HIGH FREQUENCY TRANSDUCER
PLATINUM II : FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES MPD (MICRO PLEATED DIAPHRAGM) HIGH FREQUENCY TRANSDUCER NEW PLATINUM MPD RADIATING SURFACE AREA
=
8 x LARGER THAN A DOME TWEETER
• Radiating surface area area is over 8 times larger than a dome tweeter Higher efficiency and lower distortion • No break up peak with output to over 60KHz Smoother sound signature throughout the whole audio band and beyond Increased power handling and reliability, plus better consistency and pair matching • No Optimised Diaphragm Geometry Use of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to design out ‘issues’ seen in other AMT style high frequency drivers related to large dips in frequency response Typical traits in all other speakers using AMT Monitor Audio design is unique, designed in house and built exclusively • Flat impedance Easier to drive and less amplifier partnering considerations
PLATINUM II : FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES
2. BASS / MID RANGE DRIVERS
PLATINUM II : FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES BASS / MID-RANGE DRIVERS Dynamic Coupling Filter (DCF) – Patented
• 2nd Generation RDT diaphragm Developed and precision made in Germany and utilising a carbon rear skin
improved damping of break up modes, smoother roll off and cleaner sound overall
• Optimised suspension geometry Use of FEA to design a more integrated surround-cone coupling and new adhesives • Dynamic Coupling Filter (DCF) – Patented mechanism Provides improved venting and acts like a shock absorber
reduction in distortion of 6dB in the sensitive audible presence region of 1-4KHz
Lowers distortion and adds further damping to provide higher order, natural roll off
• Under hung voice coils on all drivers Voice coil always remains in the magnetic gap Significant reduction in distortion and linearity Lower mass due to less copper outside the magnet gap Secondary benefit of less inertia, so faster transient response • Copper ‘eddy’ shorting rings All drivers benefit from copper coated poles lower ‘hysteresis’ and reduction in non linear distortion Also reduces impedance rise with frequency to provide a flatter impedance and easier drive.
PLATINUM II : FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES BASS / MID-RANGE DRIVERS
• Edge-wound voice coil No gaps in winding density ensure a higher copper mass /mm is within the magnetic gap Less air means more force and dynamic capability • Thermal Optimisation All parts are black CED coated to absorb and sink infra-red (heat) radiation from the voice coil Chassis design to sink heat transfer efficiently Multiple thermal optimisation techniques employed higher power handling and lower distortion. • Special die-cast clamping mechanism Provides bolt through driver as well as rear pole venting Better thermal cooling, negligible power compression and low internal air pressure • Up-scaled magnet and voice coil sizes More magnetic force and better power capability
better transients and clean deliver, even at high SPL
PLATINUM II : FEATURES AND ADVANTAGE
3. SYSTEM DESIGN
PLATINUM II : FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES SYSTEM DESIGN
• Introducing single bolt through driver technology on the whole range Better clamping force Additional cabinet bracing • ‘Matrix’ style cabinet bracing employed Better structural bracing all round • Single ‘over driver’ grilles Very low interaction on the sound through no diffraction and low levels of reflection • Bespoke solid-body terminals Unique terminal design by MA using Rhodium plated contacts and ‘slip ring’ Improve clamping force and contact resistance • Crossovers Upscale wire grades lower resistance and improve efficiency. Higher order design topology improved off-axis uniformity, driver integration and lower distortion • ARC Anti-resonance composite material utilised again for mid-range enclosures and critical parts that require high rigidity and good acoustic damping

PLATINUM II : SONIC CHARACTERISTICS
SONIC CHARACTERISTICS
•
High Frequency exhibits clarity without any harshness or obvious edges
•
Bass is taught and works better that the previous series when place closer to a wall
•
Doesn’t get ragged at high Sound Pressure Level and maintains composure
•
Because of the above – it will play almost any material without sounding over the top.
•
If bass is there it will play it – Larger contrast in the dynamic range
•
Efforts to lower distortion can clearly be heard, encompassed within the above
•
Very fine integration between drivers – Sounds consistent in character throughout the range
