1. General Information
USB PC Reader
1.4 Functional principle The USB PC Reader is an ID card reader that transmits ID data read from the card to a PC application. All variants are based around a contactless reader. The USB PC Reader will read data from an ID card that is within range of the antenna. This requires that the ID card is held over the printed antenna symbol on the reader housing at a
minimum distance of 4 cm* for a period of approximately one second. The data read from the ID card is always transmitted as a 16 character value. If the ID data is shorter, additional padding characters will be added as required.
1.5 Read procedure The type of read procedure supported is indicated by the type code on the nameplate. The nameplate is located on the underside of the housing.

2. Connection
2.1 Connecting the USB PC Reader The USB PC Reader's USB cable connects to a PC's USB port. The operating system's original virtual COM port driver is used. This should be installed when you first plug in the USB PC Reader. The first time you plug in the USB PC Reader, a search is done for an available COM port. This reader then always occupies the COM port number that is found. (Please note: The driver is not signed although it is from Microsoft and is part of the operating system.)
If possible, set the following parameters in the operating system's control panel (on the PC): Transfer rate: 9600 Bits/s Data bits: 8 Parity: even Stop bits: 1
(The setting is only made for compatibility with the old system and is of minor importance because the setting is ignored from this point onwards.)

3. Commissioning
3.1 Reader software Description: The supplied software is used to read in ID card numbers via an ID card reader. Every ID card number that is read without error will be entered into an interface file (ASCII format). Please note that the interface file only stores the most recently read ID card number. Installation Copy the PC reader software into the desired working directory: ID card reader application: 'pcauswl.exe' Configuration file: 'pcawl.ini' Configuration: Configure the PC reader software via the
menu by selecting menu option . • Starting the ID card reader automatically when the application is opened The connection to the ID card reader is automatically created when the PC software is started. • PC ID card reader interface Specifies which of the PC's COM ports the reader is connected to. • Transfer file for ID card number Directory: Name of directory in which the ID card number transfer file should be created (leave empty: the reader software's current working directory) File name: the file name of the ID card number transfer file • ID card number definition The PC reader always outputs the full ID card number as read out from each ID card. Use this setting to specify which portion of the card number read should be recorded in the ID card number transfer file. Start position: The position of the character in the ID card number that should be used as the first character in the transfer file. Number of characters: Number of characters from the start position that should be recorded. The configuration data is saved in the 'pcawl.ini' INI file in the PC reader software's working directory.

3.2 Reading in ID card data 3.2.1 Starting the reader software
3.2.2 Using the 'Connect PC to reader' button Start the communication with the PC ID card reader (if it does not start automatically when the application is started).
3.2.3 Present an ID card.
3.2.4 The transfer file containing the ID card number will be created and can be evaluated. The ID card information recorded in the transfer file will be displayed in the 'ID card number' field.
3.3 Other software Further functionality is provided by the application software for the various time and access systems. Please refer to the appropriate online help or manual for information on the functionality offered by these systems and how to use them.
