USB supports three different speeds: • Low-speed devices operate at 1.5 Mbps (megabits per second). Examples include keyboards, mice and serial interfaces such as RS232. USB version 1.0 and 1.1 compliant devices provide enough bandwidth for these applications. • Full-speed devices operate at 12 Mbps. Examples include web-cams and printers. Typically, USB versions 1.0 and 1.1 will provide enough bandwidth to meet these requirements. • High-speed devices operate at 480 Mbps. These devices include external CD-ROM, DVD drives and USB to Ethernet applications. USB version 2.0 is the preferred version for these types of applications. USB 2.0, or high speed USB, is backward compatible with USB versions 1.0 and 1.1.
