The guide are both for the heart rate training and power (watt) solution. Instructors and administrative staff should all read through this document carefully before the product is used. The Activio Solution comes in the different versions: ● Activio Premium Solution ● Activio Power Solution ● Activio Laptop/Tablet Solution (with our without Power) All systems can use the extensions: ● myActivio.com - upload, track and analyze heart rate data and share your training ● Activio Virtual Trainer - design profiles of the cardio class and visualize during workout The basic software functionality is the same for all three versions and described together with the extension in this user guide. Overview In the training room (typical a spinning studio) there is a screen where the Activio Gauges (Intensity Meters) are displayed with a projection unit or on large screen display. Each gauge is connected to a member and show the heart rate and/or bike power (optional). The member login using a touch screen computer (Activio Panel PC) or on a laptop/tablet (optimal for smaller groups, schools and PT’s). Up to 80 users can be connected to one system at the same time but over 200+ users can simultaneously transmit heart rate data in the same area (in multiple systems) without interference. The Activio systems use digital radio protocol with a unique radio frequency that is not disturbed by WiFi, Bluetooth, cordless phones etc and is very stable to use. There are no over-hearing or interference between the heart rate transmitters. For the power bike solution an ANT+ bike using the Power Profile or Keiser m3i bike (with the Keiser Receiver Box) is required. User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 4 (42) Heart Rate Intensity Zones The colored zones on the HR gauge corresponds to the table below and is relative the users maximum Heart Rate. Zone Color Zone Interval Training Effect (% of Max HR) White zone 50 - 60 Light Blue zone 60 - 70 Moderate Green zone 70 - 80 Hard Yellow zone 80 - 90 Very hard Red zone 90 - 100 Maximum Power Training Zones The Activio power training zones are based on Allen and Coggan (2010) but simplified to five zones where FTP is the Functional Threshold Power. On the Power Gauge, the lower scale is the heart rate zones as described above. Zone Color Zone Interval Training Effect (% of FTP) White zone 50 - 75 Aerobic endurance Gray zone 76 - 90 Tempo Orange zone 91 - 105 Threshold Purple zone 106 - 120 VO2 max Pink zone 121 - 500+ Maximum effort User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 5 (42) Heart Rate Chest Belt The heart rate chest belt detects the electrical signal from the heart. The heart rate frequency is measured in beats per minute and is digitally transmitted with a unique ID (unlimited users) to a receiver in the studio. The Activio Non-Interference Protocol radio transmission is very stable and resistent against disturbance from other radio transmitters (like WiFi, Bluetooth, cordless phones, instructor headset, wireless audio etc). Even if multiple members are very close to one another there are no disturbance or any risk to “listen to the wrong chest belt” as common with analogue chest belts. Ordinary receivers in wrist heart rate monitors cannot receive the signal from Activio's heart rate chest belt. Activio Standard Belt, CS5 How To Use The heart rate chest belt is put around the chest with solid contact directly against the skin. The chest belt is automatically turned on when the two electrodes on each side detects the heart rate signal and starts to immediately transmit heart rate information to the receiver. After training the chest belt is taken off, cleaned and dried, after 30 seconds the belt will turn off. For correct use the middle module should be centered on the chest with the text “ACTIVIO” facing outward and in readable orientation. In order for the measurement to be as good as User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 6 (42) possible, it is important that the the Activio logo is not upside-down and the belt is not shifted to one or the other side on the chest and that the two contact surfaces on the back side have solid contact with the skin. Here are a few tips of how to wear the belt and improve the functionality: ● The two grooved electrode surfaces on the back side of the chest belt may need to be moisterned before use. Normally the chest belt transmits data with no problems, even if it is not moistened beforehand. When you start to sweat, the contact improves further from moist released by the body. ● Tighten the elastic strap so that the belt sits snugly against the skin. If the chest belt sits too loose on the chest, there will be either poor or absent heart rate detection. It could also cause wrong values and spikes/dips. ● The belt can be placed just below the edge of a bra, or under the band of the bra in order to sit more securely. An underwire bra with metal wires is not recommend while it can disturbe the heart rate detection. Storage and Care The heart rate chest belt consists of a plastic unit and an elastic strap. The plastic unit has two electrodes on the back side to detect the heart rate, as well as a radio transmitter and battery compartment in the middle to transmit the heart rate information to the receiver. Cleaning After each session, clean the belt thoroughly with water and mild soap. Thoroughly clean the two grooved electrode surfaces. N ever use alcohol or other strong detergents. Only use the hands and rinse with water, do not use harsh materials when cleaning, as this could severely damage the chest belt. Avoid immersing the chest belt in water, as liquid may work its way into the battery through the seal on the battery cover. Clean the elastic strap by hand with ordinary laundry detergent (maximum 30ºC), do not use softener and do not tumble dry (this will cause the strap to get loose faster). Storage To extend the chest belts lifetime and also be able to claim any warranty, it’s important that the chest belt is stored correctly: ● Do not expose the chest belt to temperatures outside the 0ºC to 50ºC range. Avoid storing it in direct sunlight. ● Do not pull or bend the plastic part of the chest belt forcefully, as this could damage the electrodes. ● Do not store the chest belt damp, i.e in a bag together with sweaty training clothes. This can causes the belt to shortcut the elctrodes and wrongfully detect a signal and not turn off, which shortens the lifetime of the battery. (It does not damage the belt itself). User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 7 (42) ● We recommend hanging the belts on a long peg on the wall (avoid pegs with a hook in the end as they might damage the plastic fittings when taken on and off) or store them in a basket after being cleaned and dried. We recommend you to buy an Activio Wall Hanger with straight pegs customized for storing the Activio chest belts. Chest Belt Battery The chest belt does not need charging and the lifetime is typically up to 1000 hours when used 1 hour/day indoors at 25ºC. Depending on the environmental conditions the exact lifetime between different belts may vary. The belt is powered by a replaceable 3V lithium cell battery (CR2032). When the battery starts to loose its power, the transmit range of the band gradually decreases. The system gives no warning. The participant experiences the problem as the gauge simply giving no results or updates very slowly, since the heart rate data from the participant does not reach the receiver. First, test if this may be due to other problems; see the section below on troubleshooting. Change of Battery We recommend to only use known battery brands as Sony, Duracell, Maxwell, Volta, Panasonic etc and avoid cheaper brands to guarantee optimal performance of the chest belt. Cheaper batteries are more likely to give an unstable current/voltage or start to leak inside the belt. To change the battery: ● Use a coin of your choice and a plastic tool of choice with a flat head. ● Open the battery lid by turning it a bit to the left. ● Carefully remove the battery and make sure to not damage the rubber sealing (O-ring). Use the plastic tool to remove the rubber sealing out of its notched area. ● Place the new rubber sealing in the notched area and use your thumb in a circling motion to even it out before placing the battery back into the battery compartment and closing the lid carefully. We always recommend you to change the rubber sealing (O-ring). An Activio Battery Replacement Kit (including a new battery and O-ring) can be ordered by your reseller or from Activio. If the sealing is damaged or small dust particles is entering the space between the sealing and the battery lid, water and moisture can enter the battery compartment and damage the chest belt. THIS IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY! User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 8 (42) Chest Belt Troubleshooting If the heart rate chest belt is not working as it should, check the following first before contacting the support: ● Is the chest belt correctly put on the chest? The entire belt should have a solid and snug contact directly against the skin, with the Activio logo right side up and facing outward. ● If a chest belt is not working, test it on another second person. ● Try moistening the electrodes - this improves contact with the skin. ● If a person has a lot of chest hair, this may lead to poor contact. In such cases, a special gel (silica gel/electrode gel, available at pharmacies and sport shops) can be lightly applied to the two belt electrodes in order to improve contact. Thoroughly clean off the gel after the training session and don’t let it dry on the belt. ● Are the electrodes dirty with a surface covering or do they look worn with scratches or marks? Try to clean the electrodes with mild soap and water. ● Is a underwire bra with metal wires used? This could disturbe the heart rate detection. Try a similar brand with plastic wires or a sports bra. ● Has the belt been used close to 1000 hours? If so, the battery may need to be replaced. If the chest belt has been stored in a damp environment, this may have prevented the chest belt from turning off properly, causing the battery to be drained more quickly. User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 9 (42) Receiver Unit The different Activio solutions all use one of two receivers depending on the customer requirement and environment. The larger RTX4- receiver can handle up to 80 users up to 100 m indoors (up to 300 m outdoors). It is connected with a 4.5 m USB cable with a rugged screw-connector for safer operation, at the PC side it use a standard USB A connector. The smaller USBD1 dongle receiver can handle 20 users up to 50 m (indoor) and is connected directly to the computers USB port. Both receivers are powered by the computers USB port and doesn’t need any other external power source. RTX4 receiver (top) and USBD1 dongle (bottom) Installation Most Activio systems is delivered pre-installed and the receiver is already configured for the system. For the Activio Laptop/Tablet Solution the user need to install both the receiver and the Activio software. To install the receiver, simply put the receiver in the USB port and Windows Update will automatically search for the drivers and install the receiver. If this doesn’t work a manual installation may be necessary. The drivers are delivered on the USB stick together with the Activio software. Please contact Activio support for assistance. Best Practice For optimal performance the receiver is located at minimum 1 meter above ground, facing the users with free-sight. Avoid placing the receiver and the USB cable close to other radio transmitters, micro-ovens, wireless phones, ventilation pipes/shafts, electrical equipment, power cables, loudspeakers, amplifiers etc. Also avoid large metal surfaces (note that also mirros contains a large metal surface). User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 10 (42) How to Use the Activio Solution The Activio software is touch-based and optimized for a touch screen. For users not having a touch screen display (which could be the case for the Laptop Solution) can use the mouse pointer instead of touch. Basic Use Before each session the users must login to the system, select a gauge position (with Static mode), connect to a heart rate chest belt (and optionally a power bike). During the login process the user enter the maximum heart rate (and for power the max FTP). The user can choose to login with the standard login and use a borrowed heart rate chest belt from the gym, but then no heart rate or power can be stored and uploaded to myActivio.com. Or the user can choose to login with a registered profile explained later in this User Guide (which allow recording of heart rate/power). After confirmation the selected gauge is turned on and starts to present the heart rate (and power) values with the Activio zones. After the training, the user logout from the system and the borrowed heart rate chest belt is available for the next user. If using a profile, the heart rate (and power) data is uploaded to myActivio.com. If the user forgets to logout, the system will logout all idle users after approximately 5 minutes (this can be disabled in the system settings). Static or Dynamic Gauge View The Activio Solution can be installed with Dynamic or Static gauge view (this does not apply to the Power Solution which is always static). The “Dynamic” mode starts with an empty gauge screen and adds one gauge at the time on the screen, thus maximizing the size of the current visible gauges. The gauges appears in the same order they are logged in by the member. Dynamic mode can not be selected for the Power Solution. The “Static” mode show all gauges (as many as the number of users set in the system) in fixed positions but “turned off”, meaning they are dimmed and not activated before logged in. The user can then select which gauge they want to use on the gauge screen and it is turned on. This is very valuable if the user are positioned in a cycling room with colons or other users in front of him. Static mode is the default and only mode for Power Solution. User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 11 (42) Standard Login The standard login is the basic login process for any user. Symptom What to do? The projector shows a black image. Is the projector powered on? Are the status lamps on the projctor turned on and not flashing? If the TEMP lamp are flashing or red, clean the projector filter and reset the lamp timer. Is the projector lamp broken? The project shows a bright blue image or a manufacturer logo (“Hitachi”, “Viewsonic”, ”Vivitek”, etc.) Is the Activio system (Panel PC or laptop/tablet) turned on and running the Activio software? is the extended desktop configured on the Activio system? Is the VGA/HDMI cable between the Activio system and the projector properly connected? Is the correct input source used on the projector? Use the remote control and press INPUT/SOURCE and try VGA or HDMI as video source. Is the VGA/HDMI cable using an extension or splitter on that is turned off or malfunctioned? No gauges are visible? (You can possibly see a colored background in grey, yellow, orange, green or purple. Sometimes the gauges is on the touch screen instead.) The heart rate value on the gauges is “0” and not updating for ANY user. First make sure the Activio system and projector/screen is powered on. Also make sure the VGA/HDMI cables are connected between the projector/screen and the Activio system. Make sure the projector is turned on. Then restart the Activio system, now the gauge screen should be properly positioned. If this is not the case contact the Activio Support. Is the Activio system (Panel PC or laptop/tablet) turned on and running the Activio software? is the extended desktop configured on the Activio system? Is the heart rate receiver connected to the system? Check the USB connector on both sides. User Guide Activio Solution 2017-02-07 Page 39 (42) Look if the receiver status LED is green? If the green LED is flickering, it indicates that HR values are received. Is anything in the way of the receiver antenna, e.g. a metal surface, whiteboard, mirrors etc.? Also loudspeakers, amplifiers etc. Move any obstacles which interfere with the radio transmission. The heart rate value on the gauge is “0” and not updating for ONE user or a FEW users. Check how the user is wearing the chest belt (see the Chest Belt Troubleshoot section above). Check if it works better standing close (within 1-2 m) to the receiver - this indicates a low battery, replace it. The heart rate values are updating very slowly. Check how the user is wearing the chest belt (see the Chest Belt Troubleshoot section above). If there are slow updates it can also be the instructor headset that interfer with the chest belts. Try to turn off the headset (also in nearby rooms) - if it improves change the headset frequency used. Is anything in the way of the receiver antenna, e.g. a metal surface, whiteboard, mirrors etc.? Also loudspeakers, amplifiers etc. Move any obstacles which interfere with the radio transmission. The Panel PC touch screen does not recognize touches or react on the wrong parts. First restart the system, if the problem is not resolved the touch screen need to be recalibrated. Contact the Activio Support for assistance. Projector filter The projector filter needs to be cleaned regularly. The projector has a timer that give a notice on the screen when the filter need to be cleaned. The filter is easily removed and contained behind a lid on the projector, close the lamp unit. Remove the dust from the filter by blowing air or carefully vacuum clean the filter, then replace it to the projector and reset the timer in the projector menu. See the projectors manual for specific instructions. In Case of a Power Outage The Activio system (Panel PC) and projector/large screen should always be connected and turned on 24/7. The projector should be put in stand-by mode between classes. If there has been a power outage or if the power to the system has been turned off by mistake, it will normally turn on automatically when power returns. In some cases the projector does not turn on in time and the gauge screen is not properly arranged on the secondary screen, in this case just restart the Panel PC while the projector is turned on.
