Terms and conventions The following terms and conventions are used in this user’s manual.

USB-port Acquire by purchase the USB 2.0 cable. (for Windows 2000- or Windows XP-operating systems). the cable should not be longer than 3 meter.

Network port (optional) The printer can also be connected with a Fast Ethernet Print Server to a network (optional). Connect the Fast Ethernet Print Server to the parallel port and connect the print server via Ethernet-network cable to the LAN.

Connect the power supply to the power input socket of the printer.

Unpack print cartridges and peel the pink (colored) protection film off the tricolor print cartridge.

Lift the latch of the print cartridge cradle.
250-sheet paper tray (optional)
The 250-sheet Plain Paper Tray Accessory expands the paper capacity of your printer to 250 sheets. It is useful for high-volume printing and for occasions when you want to use special media such as letterhead paper or plain paper. Please contact your local dealer or KOMDRUCK.
Installation

Attach document input tray to the front of printer by hanging it in the slots positioned at both sides of the document feed. Attach the document output tray to the back of the printer by sliding it under the hooks.
Caution: Do not touch nozzles or copper contacts!

Insert new cartridges with contacts backwards and slide it into the print cartridge cradle. 1.

Push down the print cartridge latch until it snaps in.

Now insert the black print cartridge and close top cover

Insert a plain A4/Letter sized sheet of paper. The printer will start printing a print head calibration pattern.
Note: After each print head exchange the printer calibrates the print heads. Insert a plain A4/Letter sized paper sheet! 14.
Insert the printer driver CD and follow the instructions
Printer driver installation on a Windows XP computer This section will explain the installation process on a Windows XP computer. If you want to install the printer driver in Windows7 please see next section. Note: Connect the printer to the computer AFTER the driver installation!

Insert the driver CD in the CD drive. The CD should boot automatically and the driver installation setup- wizard opens click on “WEITER” button to continue.

The installation setup will begin as soon as you click on the „INSTALLIEREN“ button.

All necessary files will be transferred. This may take a while.

When the installation is complete the following dialog is displayed. Make sure to check „KOMDRUCK IDP Treiberinstallation starten“ and click the “FERTIGSTELLEN” button“.

The following window will open and all available operating systems will be displayed. Chose your operating system and click the applicable button.

After clicking on the „Windows XP“ button, the installation wizard will open. Click „WEITER“ to continue.

If the „Windows Logo Test“ message appears click on the „CONTINUE ANYWAY“ button to continue.

The installation will be started.

The installation will be continued. This may take a while.

The installation will be complete when clicking on the „FINISH“ button. 11.
Click on „OK“ to make the special functions of the KOMDRUCK IDP available.
Note: There will be NOo toolbox on a Windows XP computer installed! To use the special functions you need to open the printer properties.

Connect the printer with the computer. After that the message “Found New Hardware” will pop up.

Note: There is no USB or parallel cable included in the scope of delivery!

Now select „Install software automatically (Recommended)” and click on the “NEXT” button to continue.

The operating system will now notify you that the driver you wish to install was not tested by Microsoft. Click on the “CONTINUE ANYWAY“ button to continue.
After the correct connection of the printer, Windows will notify you that it had found new hardware and the installation wizard for newly recognized hardware will appear. Please continue as follows: Choose an option, e.g. „No, not this time“. Click on the “NEXT” button to continue.

Installation will be started and all necessary files will be copied. This may take a while.
Printer driver installation on a Windows7 computer
Note: Connect the printer to the computer AFTER the driver installation! Insert the printer driver CD into the CD drive. The CD should start automatically. When the „AutoPlay“ message appears please click on „Install or run program from your media“ to begin installation.

Wait until the installation is completed. The following dialog box will appear. Click “FINISH”. You can work with the printer now.

The User Account Control window will open. Click on „YES“ to continue.

To finish the setup wizard click on the „FERTIGSTELLEN“ button. Make sure to tick „KOMDRUCK IDP Treiberinstallation starten“. 7.
After pressing the „Windows7“ button the User Account Control will appear again. Click on the “YES” button to continue.

The Device Driver Installation Wizard will open. Click on the “NEXT” button to continue.

To finish the Device Driver Installation Wizard click on the „FINISH“ button to continue with the toolbox installation.

Windows security message appears. Click on „Install this driver software anyway“ to continue.
Installation of the Toolbox If you followed the installation instructions properly you will now be able to install the toolbox. The toolbox allows you to use the special functions of the printer independently of the printer driver. The toolbox permanently communicates with the printer. All changes or current settings will be displayed in real time on the computer screen.
Note: The toolbox does NOT work with Windows XP.

The toolbox has been installed and is ready to use. Connect the printer with the computer. The “Installing device driver software” message in the taskbar will pop up.

Work with the toolbox The toolbox serves to make printer settings and to use the special functions. The toolbox can be used independently of the printer driver and communicates permanently with the printer. It displays the actual status of the printer. To start the toolbox proceed as indicated below. Note: The toolbox does NOT work with Windows XP.

The printer is ready to use as soon as the message below appears. Click on “CLOSE” to finish the installation process.
Read in the next section how to start and how to work with the toolbox.

Go to „START/ PROGRAMS/STARTUP/KOMDRUCK IDP TOOLBOX“ to start the toolbox.

As soon as you clicked on „KOMDRUCK IDP TOOLBOX“ the KOMDRUCK IDP icon appears in the taskbar (lower left side of the desktop). Depending on your operating system settings, continue as follows: a.
The IDP icon appears in the taskbar. Right-click on the icon and then select „IDP TOOLBOX“

If the IDP icon is not displayed, click on A small window will open where you should see the IDP icon. Right-click on the icon and the select „IDP TOOLBOX“.

The „KOMDRUCK IDP Programmstart“ pops up and the communication with the printer will be established.

The toolbox screen opens. Below is an explanation of what functions are available and what setting can be made:

Select Printer If you are using multiple IDP printer on one computer you may choose the one that you want to configure. Paper feed (safety function to avoid misprinted of documents) With the activated „Secure Feed“ the media will be fed and aligned as usual. After that if the media is moved outside the selected tolerance, the printer will abort the print job and ejects the media without printing. Re-insert the media and press the resume button Paperdump Choose where the printed media should be ejected. If you select „Front“ (the media will be ejected where you have inserted it) you need to set the dry time otherwise the printout will smear because the media will pass the print path. Auto-Alignment-off If you deactivate the auto-alignment sensor you have to position the media at the left edge of the slot. The deactivated sensor won’t scan the media edges. Alignment This function allows you to realign the print positiopn on the media. In case the print out is shifted to the left, enter a value in „left X“ and the printout will be realigned to the right according to the value entered. Default print position is at 0mm (X- and Y-Axis). 31
Send Data to Printer You need to confirm every setting with the „Send Data to Printer“ button. If this is not done the printer still uses the previous settings. Miscellaneous Buttons Default This resets the toolbox to the default settings. Help You will find answers to the toolbox functions Cancel Close the toolbox window. After closing the toolbox you will see the toolbox icon in the task bar (lower right side of screen). This means that the toolbox is still running in the background so that the pop-up are still working. Homepage If your computer is connected to the internet, you may access the KOMDRUCK website by clicking this button. Manual If you have questions regarding the functions of the printer you may open theis user’s manual as a pdf file. You need to download the free Adobe PDF Reader in order to open the file. Pen Cleaning If your printed pages are missing lines or dots, or if they contain ink streaks, the print cartridges may need to be cleaned. You may choose between Normal, Medium and super cleaning. If your printouts are still missing lines or dots after Normal cleaning, please try the medium or Super cleaning
Note: Clean print cartridges only when it is necessary. Unnecessary cleaning wastes ink and shortens the life of the cartridge 9
Pen Calibration The printer automatically calibrates the print cartridges after a new print cartridge is installed. You can also calibrate the print cartridges at other times to ensure optimal print quality. The printer prints an alignment pattern and reads it back with the blue light sensor.
10 Ink Levels Approximate ink level of each print cartridge will be displayed. The ink levels will be monitored permanently.

Exit the Toolbox If you close the toolbox, the toolbox still runs in the background. To exit the toolbox continue as follows: a.
The IDP icon appears in the taskbar.
Overview With the buttons you can turn on/off the printer, cancel a print job, restart a print job or select the print quality. 5

If the IDP icon is not displayed, click on A small window will open where you should see the IDP icon. Right-click on the icon and the select „BEENDEN“.
[1] Power button The printer can be turned on and off with the power button. After pushing the button it will take a couple seconds until the printer is ready. The power-LED starts flashing when the computer processes data. Caution: Always turn on/off the printer with the power button. Switching on and off with a connection plug board, surge protector or a (power outlet switch) can cause damages to the printer and/or the cartridge can clog.

[2] Print quality selector button and –LED Press the Print quality selector button to select a default print quality for the printer. The print quality selector LED indicates the selected print quality.
Printing a document 1. Place the print media on the input tray and gently insert into the manual paper feed until you feel a slight resistance. You can insert the media at any position. 2.
Start the print job.

The printer will align the media before the print.
[3] Resume button and –LED The resume button flashes when a paper jam occurred or the printer is out of paper. After the problem is solved press to resume printing. [4] Print cartridge status symbol and –LED The status-LED is lit or flashes when the cartridges have to be exchanged.

[5] Print cancel button Cancel the current print job by pressing the print cancel button.
The output tray can be extended. Pull out the extension when printing A4/Letter sized paper. Note: A 250-sheet paper tray is optional available for the KOMDRUCK IDP.

Open the printer’s top cover, take the black cartridge out and close top cover again. If LED is off: a problem with this cartridge exists. If LED continues flashing: open the top cover, reinsert black cartridge and take the color cartridge out.
Troubleshooting Printer is not printing Check the following: •
The printer is connected to the power supply.
•
All cables are connected properly.
•
Printer is switched on.
•
Print cartridges are installed correctly.
•
Print quality-LED is on or flashing: By pressing one of the print quality button you can select the print quality.
Paper or other print media is inserted correctly in the tray.
•
•
One icon is lit: The illuminated icon is the selected print quality.
Top cover is closed.
•
One icon is lit and another flashes: The illuminated icon is the selected print quality for the current print job.The flashing icon is the selected print quality for the next print job.
•
One icon flashes: Either FastDraft or Maximum dpi has been selected as the print quality from the printer software.
Manually clean print cartridges. After cleaning the print cartridges, reinsert them into the printer. If print cartridge status-LED still continues flashing replace print cartridge.
Check printer-LEDs The printer LEDs indicate status of the printer and possible problems. •
Power-LED flashes. The printer initializes the print process. LED stops flashing when printer has received all data.
Note: You cannot change the print quality for a document once the document begins printing.
•
Resume-LED flashes. Paper tray may be empty. Refill paper tray. Press the resume button on the front of the printer

Print cartridge status-LED is on or flashing Check ink level. The function DISPLAY THE INK LEVELS on register tab SERVICES checks which print cartridge is low on ink. Please change cartridge that is low on ink. If no print cartridge is low on ink press the resume button. If the print cartidge status-LED is still flashing switch printer off and on again. If print cartridge status-LED is on and flashing Make sure you inserted the correct print cartridges.

The printer may need a restart.
•
Press power button to switch printer off and then to switch it on again.
•
If LED is still flashing switch printer off.
•
Disconnect the printer’s power cord out of the power outlet.
•
Plug power cord back in the power outlet.
•
Press power button to switch printer on.
Despite pressing the power button the printer remains switched off •
Printer is still not printing
The printer may have drawn too much power. Disconnect the printer’s power cord from the power outlet. Wait approx. 10 seconds. Reconnect power cord. Switch printer on. If you still can not switch the printer on try another power outlet or connect directly to the power outlet rather than into a surge protector.
Check printer cable connections Printer connection via USB If the printer cable is connected to a USB hub printing conflicts may occur. Attach USB cable directly to the computer. When printing do not use other USB devices that are connected to the hub.
Paper jam: •
Clear paper jam. Press resume button.
Note: If you print on labels make sure that no label has separated from the liner. Out of paper message Verify the following: •
There is sufficient paper in the paper tray (at least ten sheets).
•
The paper tray is not overly full.
•
The paper stack is touching the back of the paper tray.
Press the Resume button to continue printing.
Paper problems If the printer ejects the paper, do one of the following:

Move the printer away from direct sunlight. The printer may have been placed in direct sunlight which can affect the Automatic Paper-Type Sensor.
•
Select a paper type other than Automatic.

Poor print quality •

Document is misprinted
Streaks and missing lines: If lines or dots on printed pages are missing or streaks appear the print cartridges may be low on ink or need to be cleaned. Print is faded: Make sure that black print cartridge is installed. If the black text and images on the print-outs are faded you maybe print with the tri-color cartridge. In addition to the tri-color cartridge insert a black print cartridge to achieve an optimal print quality. Make sure that no print cartridge is low on ink. If any print cartridge is low on ink you should replace it. Make sure that the protection film has been peeled off the print cartridges. Consider selecting a higher print quality. Blank pages print: May be the pink protection film is still attached to the cartridge. Make sure that the protection film has been peeled off. May be the print cartridges are low on ink. Replace empty cartridges. Too much or little ink appears on the page: Adjust the ink volume: open the PRINTER PROPERTIES. Select the tab BASICS. Click on button ADVANCED FEATURES. Move the ink volume slider toward LIGHT or HEAVY. Click OK.

Text and images are misaligned: If text and images are misaligned on your print-out the calibrate the printer.
•
Parts of the document are missing or not centered: Open dialog box PRINTER PROPERTIES and confirm the following options: tab EFFECTS RESIZING OPTIONS: appropriate paper size SCALE TO FIT: activate this option that text and graphics will be adjusted to the paper format. tab BASICS: ORIENTATION verify the appropriate orientation.
•
Print-out does not reflect new print settings: You can adjust certain print settings, e.g. print sequence/order. The default print settings may differ from the software application’s print settings Select appropriate print settings in the application.
Photos are not printed correctly •

Printer is slow The printer’s performance can be slowed down by a number of variables.
Check printer properties: Open Tab PAPER/QUALITY and check the following Size is: appropriate paper size Ink mixture for paper type: appropriate ink mixture Quality: best or maximum resolution Colors are tinted or incorrect: Calibrate the ink cartridges. Reprint the photo. If colors are still tinted or incorrect clean print cartrides or change cartridges. If colors are still tinted or incorrect, then open the dialog box PRINTER PROPERTIES, select the tab COLOR, then COLOR ATTRIBUTES and then do the following: If colors are too yellow move the slider towards cooler. If colors are too blue move the slider towards warmer. Reprint photo.
•
Multiple software applications are opened The printer does not have sufficient ressources for the printer to print at its optimum speed. Close all unnecessary applications to increase printer speed.
•
Complex documents, graphics or photos are printing Documents containing graphics or photos take longer to print than text documents.
•
Best or maximum dpi mode is selected If the best or maximum dpi mode is selected the printer prints slower. Select a different print quality mode if you want to increase the printer speed.
•
computer does not meet system requirements If your computer does not have enough RAM or free space on the hard drive, the printer processing time will be longer. Check if the computer’s RAM, hard disk space and processor speed meet system requirements. Free up space on the hard drive.
•
Printer is in ink-backup mode In ink-backup mode the printer may print more slowly Use two print cartridges to increase print speed.
If colors are still tinted or incorrect, calibrate the print cartridges.
