Using Google Maps To Extend Your Curricula Using an Internet Browser, type in “maps.google.ca” into the address bar to access Canadian maps, or “maps.google.com” for world maps. Click on „Sign in‟ in the top right corner of the window. Sign in at the upper right corner. If you do have an existing account, you will be asked to provide your email address and password. If you don‟t have an account select the „Create an account now‟ link. Accounts are free with no downloads necessary. Creating a Google account also provides you with a gmail email address, access to google docs, spreadsheets, as well as customize your home page on the Internet. Once you have logged in, select „My Maps‟. This will take you to maps that you have already created, or gives you the option to create a new map by selecting „Get Started‟. At this time you must give your map a name, have the option of providing information about the map, and determining whether the map will be available to the public, or have restricted access. „Save‟ when all is done. „Save‟ once you have completed these details. Navigation On Your Map You may select between „Map‟ view and „Satellite‟ view. Select from the top right corner of the Google Map window. As you use the zoom and scrolling feature, you will notice that the scale changes. You can add place marks, lines and shapes on to your map. Select the icon to drag and drop to the desired location on your map. Once you have added a place marker, you will be asked to add a title and provide information about that point. If you wish to add pictures or links to the place marker, you will need to switch into „Rich text‟ mode. Hi-lite the text you wish to link, select the hyperlink symbol, and provide the URL. Once entered, select OK to make the link active. You may also insert a picture into your place mark. Please take care to only use images where you have permission to use. Creative Commons sources may be good source for images. To add an image, select the image icon and when prompted, add in the image‟s URL. To find the URL, right click on the image and go to properties. Copy and paste into the Script Prompt. Select OK Save and select „Done‟ when you are finished the edit mode. When you select the place mark, the information identified at the place marker will be displayed. Select „Edit‟ if you wish to make changes, additions or deletions to your map. If you wish to provide a link so that others can see the map, Google Map provides the map‟s URL in the top right corner of the window. Select „Link‟ to obtain the necessary URL. You may also access the HTML necessary to embed the map in a website. Click here to see a working copy of this map.
