INTRODUCTION
Meet Equa, an explorer with unknown origins who awakens in the world of Tevaria. Equa is joined by Celare, a floating wisp familiar with the planet who acts as a companion and guide, and the Preceptor, an artificial life form who provides Equa an augmented view of the world and access to the technology. Together, they explore the world mastering limits, limit laws, continuity, and asymptotes to unlock the power of Manthan technology and save the planet from destruction.

STARTING THE GAME
After Installing the game (refer to the Install Instructions above for support), open the file folder where Variant: Limits was installed then double left-mouse click on the VariantLimits icon , VariantLimits.exe for Windows users or VariantLimits.dmg for Mac users.
CONFIGURATION WINDOW
Double left-mouse click on the VariantLimits icon to open a new window titled “Variant Configuration” with several Graphics options. These options allow for changes to screen resolution, graphics quality, monitor selection, and provide a checkbox to play the game in windowed mode. Any selections made on the Input tab will have no impact on the controls ingame.

Note: It is important to run the game using the settings recommended by the Variant Configuration window for your computer. These recommended settings are pre-populated and will vary based on your computer (they may not match the image above). Changing these settings may impact game performance.
LOGIN
In order to play Variant: Limits, you must login with your Triseum™ Account and verify your classroom. Type your email and password into the labeled fields and click the SUBMIT button. Note: Your Triseum Account is the same email and password you use login to portal.triseum.com. Forgot your password? Visit portal.triseum.com to reset.

CLASSROOM SELECTION
Left-mouse click on the dropdown menu to choose a Classroom. Classrooms on this screen will match those where you have redeemed a Game Key. If you do not remember the name of your Classroom, you can login to portal.trsieum.com to see all Classrooms where you are a participant. To complete the Login process, click the SUBMIT button.

START MENU OPTIONS
Once logged in, you will have five options available: 1. Play Game – Selecting Play Game will allow you to start a new game or continue from an existing saved game, if possible. 2. Settings – Selecting Settings will allow you to change Audio Settings and view the in-game Controls. 3. Classroom – Selecting Classroom will allow you to change the current Classroom. 4. About – Selecting About will allow you to read the Credits and End User Access and License Agreement (EUALA). 5. Exit – Selecting Exit will close the game. Start Menu Options

1. Play Game: i.
To start a new game, left-mouse click on one of the five save slots available. Then, left-mouse click on the same slot with the date and time. Note: Empty slots will appear as blue squares with white plus signs. Saved games will appear as the date and time of the last save. Leftmouse click on the trash can icon then on save slots to delete save games.

To continue a saved game, leftmouse click one of the save slots with a date and time.
iii.
Left-mouse click on the START button to play the game.

2. Settings: From the Settings menu you can adjust Sound options and preview in-game Controls. Graphics and Misc. options are informational only at this time.

Sound controls are manipulated by dragging sliders left or right to adjust volume. The left side of the slider represents no sound, while the right side represents maximum volume.

The Controls and Graphics options display an overview of the in-game controls and graphics information for Variant: Limits.

3. Classroom You can change the selected Classroom using the dropdown menu. Note: The Classroom name should match the classroom listed within portal.triseum.com.
4. About You can view the Variant: Limits Credits or the Triseum End User Access and License Agreement (EUALA).
5. Exit Selecting Exit will close the game.

GAMEPLAY
Each time you start a new game, a video will reveal the introductory narrative. After you have watched the introductory video for the first time, you can elect to skip the video by holding down the Esc key. Once the video completes or you held down the Esc key, you will land in a location called the Centroid. Within the Centroid, you will learn some of the basic in-game controls.
IN GAME CONTROLS To play Variant: Limits, the player can move and interact with the environment using the keyboard.
MOVEMENT Movement is controlled through the use of the following keyboard controls: • W or Up Arrow Key – Move Equa Forward • A or Left Arrow Key – Move Equa Left • S or Down Arrow Key – Move Equa Backwards • D or Right Arrow Key – Move Equa Right
INTERACT Press the E key to trigger an interaction with in-game objects which will open new view modes or travel across great distances. An icon will be displayed above any objects that trigger an interaction, refer to Page 16 for the Icon Reference Sheet.
NAVIGATION PATH Press the SPACEBAR key to reveal or disable the Navigation path.
PAUSE MENU The pause menu can be accessed while playing the game by pressing the Esc key. Left-mouse click to select Pause Menu options.
MATH PUZZLES
Solving calculus Puzzles is a key component to the Variant: Limits Learning objectives and gameplay. 7|Page ©2017 TRISEUM™, VARIANT: LIMITS V1.0.3
TYPES OF PUZZLES There are several types of Math Puzzles found throughout Variant: Limits. Each zone of Variant: Limits focus on different calculus concepts, thus each zone will introduce new Puzzle types. Within this guide, we will walkthrough how to access and use Puzzles involving Limit Orbs, found in Zone 1. This Zone 1 description will provide basic concepts needed to begin playing Variant: Limits. You will learn how to play Zone 2 - 4 while progressing in the game.
STARTING A ZONE 1 PUZZLE A small structure, called an Emitter, will be used to access Puzzle Modes in Zone 1. Using the Panoptica technology, the Preceptor will display an Emitter Icon when you move close enough to activate the Puzzle Mode. When the Emitter Icon becomes active, press the E key to access the Puzzle Mode Menu.

ZONE 1: LIMIT ORB PUZZLES
Zone 1 focuses on identifying types of limits. The player will be presented a series of graphs where they must correctly match corresponding Limit Orbs with Points of Interest. Each Puzzle may contain up to three different graphed functions represented in the Puzzle Mode Menu as; f(x), g(x), and h(x).

Press the E key to activate the Puzzle Mode Note: Left-mouse click to interact with the puzzle interface. Right-mouse click to exit the Puzzle.

When the puzzle opens, left-mouse click to drag and drop Limit Orbs onto Points of Interest

Match all Limit Orbs to corresponding Points of Interest on the graph Once the Puzzle has been solved an event will trigger in-game, such as a bridge extending or a gate opening. The Preceptor will provide additional feedback on the Puzzle or the next gameplay objective at the bottom of the screen.

If you need additional assistance to solve the Puzzle, press the Information Icon bottom of the screen for guidance and in-game symbol explanations.

INTERACTING WITH THE ENVIRONMENT The following section describes how to interact with the environment, puzzles, and items. Using the Panoptica technology, the Preceptor will display Icons above interactable in-game objects and automatically traversable areas.
TRANSMAT PAD Equa can travel great distances and past certain obstacles by using Transmat Pads. The Preceptor will indicate active Transmat Pads by a floating Emitter Icon and the Transmat Pad will glow purple. Emitter Icons are orange and shaped like a tear drop with three lines running through the center
.
Walk toward an active Transmat Pad until the Emitter Icon appears, then press the E key and Equa will teleport to a new location.
Inactive Transmat Pads are dark and have no floating icons.
Active Transmat Pads glow purple and have floating Emitter Icons.
JUMPING The Preceptor will indicate when Equa can cross gaps in the environment using the Auto-Traverse icon. The Auto-Traverse icon is represented by an orange circle with three arrows pointing upwards. The Jump action will trigger as soon as Equa has moved close enough to the icon.

CLIMBING The Preceptor will display the Auto-Traverse icon when Equa is near climbable red vines. To climb on to the vines, move Equa as close to the icon as possible to trigger the climb up action. Once Equa has climbed on to the vines, use the movement keys to navigate vine covered walls.

To exit the vines, move Equa towards the next Auto-Traverse icon until the climb down action triggers.
LIGHT RAILS
Similar to Transmat Pads, Equa can travel great distances and past certain obstacles along beams of light called a Light Rail. Active Light Rails will have an Emitter Icon floating nearby. Walk toward Light Rails until an Emitter Icon appears and press the E key to activate the Light Rail and teleport Equa to a new location.

DISCOVERY MODE
The history of the Manthan civilization can be discovered by narrative content in Lapis Vox audio recordings and additional visual clues (such as books, murals, and statues) found throughout Variant: Limits. The Preceptor will identify these with an Elective Narrative Icon that will float above them. Move toward the elective narrative content until the Elective Narrative Icon becomes active then press the E key to enter Discovery Mode which will change the focus of the visual clue or play any audio recordings. To exit Discovery Mode and return to the game world right-mouse click.

INVENTORY
Equa‘s inventory is limited to a single slot. Inventory is displayed as two white circles located at the top left side of the screen. When an item is collected the icon for that item will appear in the Inventory. If an item is discarded, or used, the Inventory will appear empty.

BATTERIES
Certain doors, objects, and Puzzles in Zone 3 require a Battery to operate. The Battery is represented as a small brown cylinder with a Battery Icon floating above it. Walk towards a Battery until the Battery Icon becomes active then press the E key to add a Battery to the Inventory. Only a single Battery can be collected and stored in the Inventory at a time. Walk towards an Unpowered Node until the Battery Icon becomes active then press the E key to remove the Battery from Inventory and place it into the Unpowered Node. This action will trigger changes in the environment, such as doors opening or platforms moving. Place a Battery in an Unpowered Node to open a door
SPLITTERS
In Zone 4, you must solve Puzzles to obtain Splitters in order to restore power by redirecting a single Emitter Beam throughout a three-level building known as the Archivarium. Splitters come in three distinct shapes which are identified in-game by one of the Splitter Icons.

Move towards a Splitter until the Splitter Icon becomes active then press the E key to place the Splitter into the Inventory. Only one Splitter may be placed in the Inventory at a time.

SPLITTER CONTROLS:
While standing next to a Pedestal, press the E key to access the Splitter Controls. The control view will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen; left-mouse click on one of the Splitter Controls to manipulate the Emitter Beam. The Splitter Controls are: • Top Center o Place a Splitter on the Pedestal o Remove a Splitter and place it back into Inventory o Switch Splitters between the Pedestal and inventory • Bottom Right – Rotate Splitter clockwise on the Pedestal • Bottom Left – Rotate Splitter counter-clockwise on the Pedestal • Bottom Center - Exit Splitter Controls
USING SPLITTERS i. Standing next to a pedestal, press the E key to access the Splitter Controls. Left-mouse click on the Top Center button to place a Splitter.
ii.
When the Splitter has been added to the Pedestal, the Top Center button on the Splitter Controls changes and the Splitter Icon will display on the pedestal and inside the Splitter Controls.

To rotate the Splitter and manipulate the Emitter Beam, left-mouse click on the Bottom Left or Right Splitter Controls. Bottom left will rotate the Splitter counter-clockwise and bottom right will rotate clockwise. Rotate the Splitter as many times as needed in order for the Emitter Beam to create a continuous path.
iv.
When a correct rotation of the Splitter has occurred, the Emitter Beam will indicate the connection by the thickness of the beam. Note: The image below does not display a correct solution (use as an example only).

To remove a Splitter from a Pedestal or switch with another Splitter in inventory, left-mouse click on the Top Center button of the Splitter Controls.

INSTRUCTOR ONLY INFORMATION: Triseum provides additional options for Instructors to access Zones and Puzzles in Variant: Limits. The Zone Picker and Puzzle Picker are accessible from the Pause Menu.
ZONE PICKER Selecting PICK ZONE from the pause menu provides direct access to one of the four main areas of Variant: Limits. Left-mouse click on of the four Zones to load into the entrance of the selected Zone.
PUZZLE PICKER Selecting PICK PUZZLE from the pause menu will display traversable Puzzles in the Zone. Select an available option to load into the start of the selected Puzzle.
Instructors can use a Puzzle Key for a visual guide to each puzzle. If you do not have access to the Puzzle Key contact your Triseum sales representative.

GAME ZONES & LEARNING OBJECTIVES Variant: Limits is divided into four Zones. Each zone covers a specific portion of the limits curriculum.
ZONE 1: The Nature of Points Zone 1 focuses on identifying types of limits and where they appear on a graph. Learning objectives covered within Zone 1 are: • Given the graph of a function, the learner will be able to approximate the limit of the function as x approaches a given value. (Bloom’s: Understand) • Given a function graphically the learner will be able to determine whether or not the function is continuous at a particular point of its domain. (Bloom’s: Apply) • The learner will be able to identify when a function is continuous from the left and from the right at a particular point. (Bloom’s: Remember)
ZONE 2: FUNCTIONS, FUNCTION RELATIONSHIPS TO LIMITS & LIMIT LAWS Zone 2 focuses on the manipulation of function inputs to remove environmental obstacles to advance. Learning objectives within Zone 2 are: • The learner will be able to explain the relationship between graphical and algebraic representations of a function. (Bloom’s: Understand) • The learner will apply the rules and principles of limits to determine the limit of a function. (Bloom’s: Apply)
ZONE 3: RELATING CONTINUITY TO LIMITS Zone 3 focuses on continuity and the intermediate value theorem (IVT). In Zone 3 the player will navigate through multiple sections of puzzles branching out from a central hub. In Zone 3 batteries are introduced; the player must find batteries and deposit them into receptacles to power certain objects, such as doors and light rails. Learning objectives within Zone 3 are: • The learner will be able to explain the notion of continuity and relate it to the notion of limits. (Bloom’s: Understand) • The learner will use the properties of continuity and relate them to corresponding properties of limits. (Bloom’s: Apply) • The learner will be able to apply the Intermediate Value Theorem in various different contexts. (Bloom’s: Evaluate)
ZONE 4: ASYMPTOTES Zone 4 focuses on identifying how graphs and limits behave at positive and negative infinity. Learning objectives within Zone 4 are: • The learner will be able to determine function behaviors as x infinitely increases or decreases. (Bloom’s: Analyze) • The learner will be able to identify vertical asymptotes and oscillating behaviors of functions. (Bloom’s: Analyze)
