What is a Smart Panel? ADLINK's Smart Panel is the first product on the market that combines computing and internet access capability into a display module. It incorporates a highly integrated design, making it easy and ideal to use in building a fully customized system. Using the highly integrated Smart Panel as a building block allows you to achieve a quality design with minimal resources for devices such as medical instruments, POS systems, test instruments, automation devices, tabletop ordering systems, and banking systems, etc.

As a building block, our Smart Panel comes in standard chassis configurations for each display size. Final integration into the target device can be performed by you for smaller volumes or through our OEM/JDM (Joint Development and Manufacturing) services for greater volumes. The Smart Panel product line targets manufacturers who have system integration capability (either in-house or outsourced) and who want to sell their product under their own brand name. ADLINK provides system customization services, providing you with a turn-key panel PC system through cooperative designing and manufacturing. For chassis solutions, ADLINK can provide a standard chassis based on your application requirements to allow quick assembly of the Smart Panel and I/O connector board onto the chassis for rapid prototyping. ADLINK can also provide reference designs (I/O board circuits and 3D model for a fanless HMI chassis) for projects under NDA, which also enables rapid prototyping. With the Smart Panel, unexpected design challenges are minimized and design error workarounds become quite manageable. The integration of a main board, display module, and display cables in the Smart Panel dramatically simplifies design requirements to where only the purchase of a single item is required, rather than a collection of components.

ADLINK's Smart Panel building blocks provide optional support for high brightness and contrast ratios for improved screen performance under direct sunlight. A special optical bonding can also be applied to reduce the reflection between the touch sensor and cell glass to further offer enhanced mechanical strength of a Smart Panel device that will be used in harsh vibration and shock environments.
Designing with Smart Panels allows engineers to focus on their core competence. Smart Panels only require simple passive circuit design for I/O connectors and ADLINK provides reference circuits to help customers to design their I/O boards with minimal effort and low risk. Concurrent engineering is possible as the software engineer can do application program development on the Smart Panel starter kit while the hardware engineer designs the chassis and I/O board.

Limited resources for product design and/or development of final system products can tax engineering resources and constrict time available for product development. The benefits of the reduction of design tasks involved with Smart Panel-equipped devices becomes significant when compared to a system design using a main board and display module. From the concept development stage to product launch, designing with a smart panel will free up resources sooner, making them available earlier for development work on other products which thus increases overall design efficiency. Engineering work can be further streamlined by developing the application on ADLINK's smart panel starter kit (which includes an SDK and BSPs) while your in-house hardware experts work on designing the chassis and I/O board.

Traditional access control systems have long been found to be very segregated (door access is independent of the attendance system, the attendance system is independent of the security office, and the security office is independent of scheduled patrols, etc.). The entire security control system is unable to operate under a single integrated structure, which not only wastes money, but also creates unnecessary consumption. The introduction of integratable products has provided a means for significant reductions in costs while effectively enhancing security control capabilities. Employees, classes, and departments can be directly added through an Internet Explorer web browser, in addition to viewing punch card records and attendance reports. This can even be integrated with human resource’s salary management software to provide even more reports for comprehensive human resources management. Access control systems can even be combined with surveillance systems or linked via triggers. When an event occurs, the administration center can provide real-time images of the occurrence to assess the situation and act accordingly the first time around, in addition to sending e-mail alerts to notify security officers. In most enterprises, a highly integrated system is needed to manage to extensive amount of human resources and requirements. How an organization effectively manages time-consuming personnel, attendance, and salary tasks with only a few people, while allowing such personnel to focus on more meaningful responsibilities has become the new trend in attendance systems.
Use of the Smart Panel in an access control system design allows the time clock to become the system’s front-end device in charge of collecting information and archiving it to the back-end database for further use. In addition, when an employee punches in or out of the time clock system, the electronic form functionality for each person is simultaneously initiated, opened, or closed based on his/her entry and permission settings. Through a single entrance, the attendance system provides all management services so that high-level policies can be monitored at any time and under any circumstances. Alerts for anomalies act as alerts for focused management which simplifies the creation of group processes across organizations and across systems.
Old style access control systems were typically structured around an ATM with an embedded system. The on-screen display only showed functionality and the back of the system still required a computer motherboard and other equipment. The appearance of such system was largely limited to the hardware devices. The benefits of Smart Panel products include high integration with an ultra-slim design and high scalability. This allows customers to reduce time-to-market for their products while reducing development risks and costs, in addition to minimizing the complexities of materials management. The Smart Panel series of products are specifically designed to easily fit in the system and case designed for simpler integration of a customized system while using fewer resources to build a high-quality platform.
ADLINK’s newly released Smart Panel utilizes an Intel high-speed CPU as the core technology of this high performance computing platform. The CPU and connectivity features are integrated on a single display module sporting a touch-screen panel to provide users an embedded HMI which breaks away from the traditional “open gate”, “close gate” control equipment to deliver a truly multifunctional machine.

Access control systems designed with a Smart Panel as the foundation for the core technology integrate the latest in technical trends to deliver a high value-add and high quality product. This new form of access control system is combined with a surveillance system and is integrated with an identification card sensor, fingerprint recognition, and a punch card method. It is also fused with a digital signage feature which can be used to promote activities and inform on benefit policies while providing a complete management cycle on the creation, collection, organization, sharing, and reuse of information.

For this new government access control system, a customized system design needed to be completed within 60 days and needed to meet the requirements of all office locations. Many of the complex electrical components are already designed into the Smart Panel and therefore engineering worked could focus on the I/O expansion and external design requirements of the customer’s system. Design cycles were thus significantly reduced and the customer deadlines and milestones were easily met, resulting in on-time completion of this new form of access control system.
ADLINK’s series of Smart Panels mix a unique blend of features. The full-featured modular design is less than 2 cm thin to support such new forms of attendance systems with half the thickness and width. The high-resolution color interface makes it easy for the user to collect data, display images, and show reports and overviews.
