Application Aware Image Processing how Veeam backup works
1. Prior to backup the VM is made application consistent (quiesced) using VSS or the hypervisor integration tools. 2. For VMware: a VM snapshot is taken For Hyper-V: an internal and external VSS snapshot is made. At this point a backup can be made.
3. For VMware a SAN snapshot can be used to speed up the backup (BoSS). For Hyper-V the external VSS snapshot can leverage hardware VSS and for Hyper-V 2012 R2 the internal VSS snapshot will use a VM snapshot

Leverage Data use backup to spin up test environments Start VMs from a backup file (SureBackup) or replica, using a virtual lab proxy to separate network traffic. The internal IP address of the virtual lab should be set to the default gateway in production. It is also possible to allow internet traffic through or map an IP address (static mapping) to allow production access to a VM.
