HBS ENCODING AND EDITING STANDARDS Below are Harvard Business School’s file format standards for digital media files. When working with outside venders to edit and deliver materials to HBS, please use the following standards. Any questions regarding the standards should be directed to Jenny Frazier in HBS Marketing & Communications at [email protected]. Technical Encoding Requirements Standard Size: 16:9 Recommend shooting in 1280x720 (for archival purposes) Video Format & Specifications: H.264 Obtain video asset in H.264 (mp4 or other file extension) to utilize on HBS websites & the HBS YouTube Channel) 16:9 ratio 700K bitrate 30 frames per second Variable bitrate encoding (VBR) Two-pass encoding Audio Specifications: 44100 Hz Stereo CBR 96K bit rate File Naming Convention:  All lowercase  Use descriptive word or words  Use _ rather than spaces or dashes  No more than 25 characters  No unusual characters (use only abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789) e.g., dean_light.mp4 Note: All videos should be encoded for streaming. Design Requirements & Samples (for reference only) Format: 16:9 Embedded Design: 480X270 Example: http://www.hbs.edu/mba/academics/ (Embedded videos will generally follow this aspect ratio, but HBS YouTube will resize to fit design) Modal Design: 640X360 (Standard size for videos used on HBS web properties) Example: http://www.hbs.edu/recruiting/mba/the-hbs-advantage/our-students.html (For 4:3 encoded videos, YouTube will automatically letterbox videos so that they display correctly without cropping or stretching) Image Still: YouTube will automatically choose a selection of video stills for the default video presentation. If a custom image is desired, HBS Marketing & Communications (M&C) can upload a unique image to YouTube. Please provide M&C as large an image as possible (suggested: 1280x720) since the image will also be used as the preview image when your video is embedded on other HBS websites. Accepted image formats are JPG, GIF or PNG file. Maximum file size is 2 MB.
