THE MIXER
REBORN Best of Both Worlds

he mixer hasn’t really changed a whole lot since its inception. Sure, technology has improved and we’re able to have more and more controls, but the mixers of today don’t differ drastically from those of days past. In fact, as recently as a couple of years ago, it looked as though hardware mixers in studio situations were on the verge of going the way of the dinosaur, forever relegated to being digital reproductions on DAW screens. But the mixer is on the rebound, taking cues from its live sound counterparts while adapting itself to the digital studio. Let’s be clear, the studio world didn’t abandon the form factor of the mixer, as control surfaces have certainly taken their cues from mixers. Plus, virtually every DAW is equipped with a mixer like interface that allows you to insert virtual effects, as well as bus groups of tracks to other virtual processors running on virtual aux sends and returns — just like an analog console. The shift in thinking wasn’t because the mixer was outdated, but rather the hardware was becoming archaic. The recording world had fallen prey to computers, and the traditional analog mixer was a tough fit for this new line of thinking.
For pro-level applications, there have been solid candidates that, while not quite full-on mixers, certainly eclipse what is expected of a control surface. Pro Tools is one of the most widely used DAW software programs out there, so it should come as no surprise that the large-format control surface was perfected by Digidesign. Whether for the studio in the form of ICON-series consoles for studio work or VENUE-series consoles for live sound, these consoles merge the power of Pro Tools with classic console feel. While these aren’t free-standing consoles in the traditional sense, their analog-feel-meets-digital-convenience has triggered a new way of thinking when it comes to controlling sound.
The Times They Are A-Changin’ The birth of computer recording brought about a revolution in the studio. All of a sudden, an entire studio could be replaced by an audio interface, a computer, and plug-ins. The mixer-style control surfaces easily fit into these situations, offering the user the benefits of transport control and faders, to blend the old with the new. For many that grew up with analog tape and big consoles, this new facsimile just wouldn’t do. For years, it seemed the recording world was forever going to be divided between console users and DAW users, and never the twain shall meet —‚ until something magical happened: someone started building consoles that looked, tasted, felt, smelled, and worked just like an analog console, but the output was designed to be connected directly to a computer. It was a stroke of genius!

SWEETWATER’S ESSENTIAL GUIDES
TL Audio Fat Track
The possibilities were nearly endless with this style of setup. In a live environment, these mixers (along with the familiar batch of ins and outs, knobs, faders, and all that jive that we’re used to seeing on an analog board) fit right in and accommodated the connection of external gear, the of setting monitor mixes, etc. But computer connectivity opened up a whole new world, allowing for the addition of digital effects from within a DAW or from within the console itself. This cooperation between the console and the computer was possible because of the capability to run bidirectional audio over a single FireWire cable. This same single cable also opened up a new possibility — a possibility that soon spilled over into the studio world — and that’s multi-channel recording. Unless the traditional analog console was equipped with direct outputs for every channel, a live recording was commonly a 2-track feed coming straight off the board, which frequently yielded a lackluster final mix. The computer-enabled mixer is now a perfect fit in the studio world, especially considering how much the computer has taken hold in this arena. Bringing old-school feel and blending it with the power and fluidity of computer recording, this new breed of mixer is poised to take over the recording world. A typical recording interface has microphone/line level inputs, but there’s no way to control the mix after the fact. Conversely, a typical control surface has the means to control the mix (pan, level, etc.) but isn’t usually equipped with mic pres. But, a computer-enabled mixer serves as a front end (mic pres), a mix engine (faders, sends and returns), and summing box (communicating and passing audio to and from the DAW). A single piece of gear serves as the complete nerve center of your digital studio, just as an analog console did prior to the digital revolution.

final stages of a digital mix. Special mixers — called summing mixers — serve as a vehicle for breathing analog soul into a digital recording. Whether you’re using plug-ins “inside the box” to handle your processing, or you’re patching in outboard analog gear, it’s possible to achieve a more organic sound with improved headroom if you incorporate analog summing into your studio. It’s really quite a simple process: bus audio (either individual tracks or submixed stems) out of your interface into an analog summing box. This analog mixer is specifically designed for combining tracks from the DAW world in the analog realm. Many summing mixers are equipped with insert points, allowing you to bring analog EQs and compressors into the mix, for additional analog sweetness. Even if you don’t use outboard processors, plug-ins can be used on DAW tracks, which can then sent to the summing mixer. Like virtually everything in the pro audio world, there are varying opinions on analog summing, and I certainly won’t attempt to anoint one the winner. Give analog summing a try on your own mixes, and judge the results for yourself!
No Right Way With a properly equipped interface and a console with direct outputs and enough sends and returns to effectively handle the mix down, an analog console can still be used in a digital studio. But this new generation of integrated consoles with computer connectivity simplifies the process dramatically without losing the feel of the traditional console. Add to that the capability of controlling plug-ins (provided your DAW is compatible), and you’ve got everything that makes a console so appealing, along with the power of a computer based-system. And analog summing adds yet another set of sonic possibilities to the mix. No matter which path you choose, if it sounds right, then it can’t be wrong!
Speaking of the digital revolution, a different form of mixer can also be integrated into a digital setup, bringing an analog element to the

The MG124CX X and MG124C are great-priced analog mixers offering six mic preamps plus a wealth of flexible I/O to handle your setup needs. Four buses make it easy for you to group channels quickly — just assign them via a switch by each fader. What’s more, both mixers boast one-knob compression on the first four input channels, a feature normally found only on much more expensive mixers.
For its small format, the MG82cx’s I/O is exceptionally versatile. On the first two channels, you can input either line or mic sources, and a one-knob compressor’s perfect for your vocal sources. Then, on three, four, and five, you have the option of going mic or mono/stereo line — great for keyboards, drum machines, or guitars. RCA inputs add flexibility, and 16 built-in effects let you sculpt the sound.

48-channel, 16-bus Digital Mixing Console
64-channel, 24-bus Digital Mixing Console TASCAM has a knack for coming up with products that address all of the needs of audio professionals and packaging them in convenient single-unit designs. The DM-4800 Digital Mixer is a perfect example. This is the digital console for users who require a flexible 64-input mix platform that configures to fit their needs. There is a “fat channel” strip in the center of the board, which provides instant access to 4-band parametric EQ, dynamics, and aux controls for the first 48 channels. What’s more, 24 studio-grade mic preamps provide enough inputs for a live event, and more can be added using expansion cards with external preamps. The standard complement of analog and digital I/O is more than you’d find on consoles costing three times as much, and a completely configurable 24-bus routing system allows you to re-patch the board at the flick of a switch. The DM-4800 also fits seamlessly into the computer-DAW recording environment. Its remote layer provides 24-fader Mackie HUI or Mackie Control emulation for control of premier workstations, such as Pro Tools, Logic, SONAR, and Nuendo. Other useful features include assignable transport controls, powerful automation with touch-sensitive motorized faders, 4-band EQ, compression, and gating, plus there are two built-in effects processors, each able to run world-class TC Electronic reverb programs. Sanctuary Series S-32 32-channel Mixer S24
Sometimes finding the right gear for your y needs is complicated by the fact that there’s nothing available il bl that h specifi ifically ll addresses dd those h needs. d For example, a mixer that was designed for a rock band might not be what’s needed in a sanctuary. What makes Peavey’s Sanctuary Series mixers such a great find is that they’re built from the ground up by people who truly understand the needs of the sanctuary. Since many worship centers depend on volunteers to run sound, Peavey developed several unique features to simplify operation. The Sanctuary series replaces hands-on mixing with Peavey’s exclusive Automix technology, an automatic mixing function that turns down unused channels to give dominance to the main microphone, minimizing unwanted noise. With the built-in automatic digital feedback elimination system, you can forget about interruptive squeals without sacrificing tonal quality. The 32-channel S-32 features a sophisticated digital effects processing section with a complete library of contemporary effects designed for the Sanctuary. The patent-pending Auto Delay toolset simplifies setting speaker delays for balcony, overflow seating, or nursery areas. A built-in USB output can stream audio directly to a computer. The Sanctuary Series includes the 21-channel S24, which packs many of the S-32’s features and functions into a more compact p and affordable unit. ONLY $111/mo.

If you’re looking for rugged high-quality gear that doesn’t break the bank, then Peavey has what you need. Their compact and incredibly simple-to-use PV series mixers feature low-noise mic preamps that guarantee your sound isn’t compromised. Peavey equipped the 14-channel PV 14 and PV 10 (10-channel) models with built-in DSP effects, to put a little shine on your tracks. The PV series has features you might expect on boards costing much more, such as a master contour EQ and versatile routing options. Do your live sound needs require fewer channels and a smaller footprint? The PV series also includes the even more space-friendly PV 8 and PV 6 models (eight and six channels, respectively). They offer up the right combination of I/O routing and affordability, making them particularly stellar picks for anyone in need of flexible desktop mixing capabilities. The ZED-24 boasts plenty of I/O to handle extensive onstage needs. Yet, it’s also equipped with USB connectivity, so you can get to work in your studio, as well. The ZED-24 offers 16 mic preamps — more than enough to tackle your band’s mics and DIs. Plus, you’ve got four stereo channels for connecting your keyboards, drum machines, and synths via 1/4". All those stereo channels are also equipped with RCA, for hooking up MP3 players or other devices carrying backing tracks. If you need fewer channels, then Allen & Heath offers the 14-channel/6 mic preamp ZED-14. All ZED mixers are equipped with USB connectivity and come with Cakewalk SONAR LE recording software. They also feature Allen & Heath’s latest DuoPre mic preamp technology for excellent sound, as well as a MusEQ section with a swept midfrequency design for the main mic inputs.
British mixer masters Allen & Heath present the next generation of MixWizard. MixWizard3 Series mixers come with upgraded mic preamps that rival big-board sound. Plus, they offer great features not often found on compact mixers, such as 100mm faders, which give the feel of a large-format board while maintaining the MixWizard series’ compact footprint. Each channel has redesigned preamps, individual phantom power, 4-band EQ, switchable highpass filters, and direct out. The mono inputs are equipped with insert points, and six aux sends and a pair of stereo returns manage the integration of external gear. Of course, the key is the distinctive sound of the EQ, with separate controls for sweep and cut/boost on midbands. MixWizard3 mixers also provide 32 digital-effects programs with external MIDI editing and control. You can get a MixWizard in a variety of sizes to meet your needs — it’s available in 16- and 12-channel configurations.

iLive-T112/48 Allen & Heath makes a fantastic large-format digital debut with the iLive-T Series. These brilliant consoles merge A&H’s esteemed mixer-making know-how with the latest in digital technology, all designed to make getting a great onstage sound faster, easier, and totally recallable. In fact, the iLive-T packs in everything you need to get between the microphones and the PA system: Every single input channel has a gate, a parametric EQ, a compressor, a limiter/de-esser, and delay. Every single output has a 1/3-octave graphic EQ, a parametric EQ, a compressor, a limiter, delay, and effects. For added flexibility, four modular panels on the rear of the mixer let you custom-configure additional I/O. Whatever your I/O, programming the iLive’s routing and 64-bit DSP processing is easy — on top of buttons and controls, there’s a full-color touchscreen, so you can quickly take charge of every parameter. Beyond that, remotely controlling the iLive is also no problem, since it comes with iLive System Manager Software that you can run from any PC — one engineer can set up mix processing on the unit while another engineer focuses other setup tasks. With 48 preamps and 28 faders (with four fader layers), the 112-assignable-strip iLive-T112/48 is available. For a 32-preamp setup with the same strip count, there’s the iLive-T112/32. Both mixers’ preamps and DSP come courtesy of included MixRack I/O units that transport audio via Cat 5e cabling. Analog Mixers with Low-noise Preamps
Compact Analog Mixer Mackie demonstrated the durability of their VLZ Series on a recent trip to Sweetwater, by having one of our Sales Engineers jump on the mixer until it caved in — and it still worked! That’s quite a ringing endorsement for the build quality of these mixers, and they’re certain to hold up under the most rigorous of tour conditions or in daily use in the studio or in the rehearsal space. With 16 studio-quality XDR2 mic preamps, an active 3-band EQ, and amazingly low noise, the 4-bus 16-channel 1604-VLZ3 is an ideal compact mixer for recording and live sound applications. All channels on the 1604-VLZ3 feature insert points and line-level inputs. Other features include a multi-input control room/ headphones matrix for flexible monitoring and signal routing, and a unique Rotopod function that allows for different desktop/ rackmount configurations. The 1642-VLZ3 includes 16 channels, each with 10 XDR2 preamps, four stereo inputs, and a 3-band EQ. The 1402-VLZ3 and the 1202-VLZ3 feature 14 and 12 channels, respectively.

PPM1012 Desktop Powered Mixer with Built-in Effects Mackie revolutionized live sound years back with their superaffordable mixers that defied logic when it came to price versus performance. The PPM1012 is a 12-channel version of the PPM1008 (featured below) with eight microphone preamps in the conventional table-top form factor. For the ultimate in convenience, channels seven and eight have DIs built in. Rack ears and top-panel I/O allow the PPM1012 to be mounted on top of a rolling rack that contains other outboard gear. Fifteen faders give you hands-on control over your mix. ONLY $32/mo.
