User Guide VG-10™ USB Audio Gateway Device 9 Austin Drive Marlborough CT 06447 www.essentialtel.com (860) 295-8100 [email protected] OVERVIEW: The VG-10™ is a single channel USB audio gateway device with balanced, 600 Ohm, analog audio input/output for use in situations where integration between software audio applications and analog (legacy) audio systems is needed The VG-10™ also has the unique feature of a software controllable contact closure for situations where an audio application may need to present an on/off condition to a 3rd party audio system via a contact closure. ETC provides the bits and memory location for control of the contact closure and your programmer can modify the software application to control its status. Connectivity to the VG-10™ is via a standard 8 pin RJ-45 for analog audio/contact closure and a USB ‘B’ style connector. QUICK SETUP: Upon connecting the VG-10 to a PC, via an ‘A’/’B’ style USB cable, a notification should appear from the system tray indicating device drivers are being installed. The VG-10 utilizes existing Windows™ USB audio device drivers, no driver disc is required. Allow the drivers to load, this could take 1-2 minutes, until notification is displayed indicating device is ‘ready for use’ by the OS. In the System Tray (lower right hand corner of start bar) you should see a speaker icon displayed there, right click the icon and a pop up menu should appear. Click either ‘playback’ or ‘recording’ devices and you should get the following window as displayed below. If you have the ‘Playback’ tab selected you should see an audio device labeled ‘ETC VoIP Ch.1’ displayed. Other audio devices may be displayed depending on hardware configuration of the particular PC. Double click the ETC VoIP CH.1 audio device to open the properties window for this audio device. Adjust slider to an appropriate level for your application. It will usually be default set to 100, ETC suggests 80 as a good starting point, it can then be fine tuned as needed. Additionally, be sure the microphone on this window is muted and slider set to 0. If the microphone is not muted in the ‘Playback’ tab of the audio device, the potential exists to experience feedback. Please note this setting has no effect on the recording level you will set in the next step. This simply prevents a loop back from occurring within the OS. When finished making adjustments on this page click OK and you will be returned to the main ‘Sound’ page. Next click the ‘Recording’ tab of the main ‘Sound’ window. You should see a device labeled ‘ETC VoIP CH.1’. Again, other audio devices may be displayed depending on hardware configuration of the particular PC. Double click the ETC VoIP Ch.1 device to open its ‘Properties’ window. Click the ‘Levels’ tab and adjust recording level. Again ETC suggests setting the slider to 80 as a starting point, then fine tune as needed for the application. When finished making adjustments on this page click OK and you will be returned to the main ‘Sound’ page. If no further adjustments are needed you may close the ‘Sound’ window and your new USB audio device is ready for use. Depending on your particular application you may or may not want to set the ETC VoIP CH.1 as the ‘Default’ audio device. Doing so will send all OS sounds to the VG-10. The VG-10 has been designed with a unique PTT feature. This feature provides a software controllable contact closure via the analog port. This contact closure can be used in conjunction with other 3rd party hardware systems needing a contact closure to provide specific functionality. If this feature is desired, ETC will provide a white paper document defining C+ code needed to control this contact closure within your software application.
