Capture from a Video Device Wizard Settings Screen 1 File Name: Choose a file name you will comprehend later. This will be the name of the file on your computer and the collection (see above to move to a project collection). Choose a place to save your file: remember where you’ve saved it! Screen 2 Option 1: This will create a .wmv file. The quality will be less, especially when viewed on Full Screen or a TV. However, the file size will be smaller and easier to work with. Option 2: This will create an .avi file. The quality will be higher and the clip will be available to import to iMovie. However, the file size will be larger and more difficult to work with. Screen 3 If you want all the clips on your tape, select “Capture the Entire Tape Automatically”. The tape will rewind and import from the beginning, dividing your shots into separate clips. If you didn’t fill your tape, at the end, click “Stop Capture” under the preview screen and “Yes” in the pop-up window. If you only want to import parts of the tape, select “Capture Parts of the Tape Manually”. Set the tape to the start spot using the preview controls on the screen, then “Start Importing” when you’re at the right spot. The program will divide your shots into separate clips. Press “Stop Capture” when you’re done and “Finish” to import the clip to your collections.

To split a clip, move the playhead to the place where you want to create a split. Go to the main menu and choose Clip>Split clip. This will cut your clip in two inside your project, but not in the collections or the original. \ To move a clip, drag and drop it to the desired location on your timeline. You cannot drop it in the middle of another clip – if you want to do this, you must split the destination clip first.
WORKING WITH SOUND To work with audio you must be in TIMELINE VIEW. To view a clip’s video and audio track separately, click the [+] beside the word “video” in the left pane of the timeline. Once you see both video and audio tracks, you can change the volume, mute , fade in or out. You cannot cut the audio track only – you can only mute it. To only mute sections of an audio track, split the whole clip, then make separate selections for the audio track of each piece of the clip. To see the menu options for audio, right click on the audio track. You can choose mute, fade in, fade out, or volume (to adjust the volume of that clip). To add narration (voice-over), place the playhead in the location you want your narration to start. This section of the audio/music track must be empty. Make sure your computer has a mic and it is not muted. From the top menu, choose Tools>Narrate Timeline. Test your mic and check your levels. Click Start Narration to begin recording and Stop Narration to end. The sound clip will be stored as a .wmv file inside My Videos>Narration. Another option for adding narration is to borrow the Sound Recorder from the Learning Commons and import the .mp3 file created on that device. To edit audio clips (in the audio/music track), follow the instructions above for editing video clips. Make sure you have the audio clip selected before making changes.
ADDING EFFECTS You can add effects in the Storyboard or Timeline View. To add an effect, click “Collections” in the toolbar and choose “Video Effects”. Drag the effect you want to add over the desired clip. Another method is to right click on the clip and choose “Video Effects”. Select the effect you want and click “Add”. To add multiple effects, repeat above. To change the layering order of your added effects, right click on the clip and choose “Video Effects”. Click on the effect you want to change and click “Move Up” or “Move Down”. To remove an effect, right click on the clip and choose “Video Effects”. To edit transitions, make sure the [+] is clicked beside “Video” in the timeline left panel to show the separate clip audio and transition tracks. Click and drag the red arrow to the spot where you want the clip to start/end.
ADDING TITLES AND CREDITS You can add titles and credits in the Storyboard or Timeline View. However, you can only edit them in the Timeline View. To add titles and credits, choose Tools>Titles and Credits from the top menu. Choose an option from the menu. (Make sure you’re on the correct clip if you want to “Add title on selected clip” or “Add title before selected clip”.) If you want to use custom still images under titles, add the image to your timeline, select it and choose “Add title on selected clip”. Type in your title. Choose “Change Title Animation” to determine how your title will appear onto the clip (fade in, fly in, etc.) Choose “Change title font and color” to customize these aspects of your title.
