Thank you for purchasing LearnItFirst’s training course DVDs! To make it easier for you to get started quickly, we’ve put together this guide for how to load and play your videos. This instruction manual is broken into four main sections:      What’s included on the DVDs? How the files on the DVDs are arranged How to watch the videos: Desktop and laptop computers How to watch the videos: Mobile devices Troubleshooting and Support I’d suggest you start out with the “What’s included” section and then go to the instructions for your device. You should be able to start watching videos within just a few minutes. If you run into trouble, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to help! Our phone number is +1 (866) 630-6708 and we are available 8:30AM – 4:30PM Central Standard Time. If email is easier, you can reach us at [email protected]. Hope you enjoy! Scott Whigham (founder of LearnItFirst) 2 What’s included on the DVDs? In the box, there are a number of DVDs – typically 2-3 DVDs for each course. Let’s walk through what each DVD contains and how they are used. All of the DVDs contain the following:      A digital copy of this document is located on the root of each DVD o File name: VideoPlaybackInstructions.PDF) A checklist of every video in the course is also included on every DVD o File name: Course-Videos-.PDF (such as Course-Videos-170.pdf for Course 170). o To help you identify specific videos to watch o To help you track your progress through the course The course videos The course files (exercise instructions, code files, sample databases, report files, PDFs, etc) Several support files that are referenced throughout this document The Orange DVDs The orange DVDs contain the entire course formatted for large screen viewing (such as on a desktop computer or a laptop). You will be directed how to use these in the How to watch the videos: Desktop and laptop computers section of this document. The Blue DVD(s) The blue DVDs contain the entire course formatted for smaller screen viewing (such as on mobile devices, phones, tablets, etc). You will be directed how to use these in the How to watch the videos: Mobile Devices section of this document. Screenshots Some of the instructions in this document will make reference to screenshots that are found on the DVDs. The screenshots help to visually show the information being provided. The screenshots in this document are in bold text and have an icon next to them like this:  /Support/Screenshots/iOS/iPhone/iPhone_Navigation.png For the above file, you would locate that file in this manner: 1. Navigate to the DVD’s contents 2. Navigate the following folder structure until you are in the “iPhone” folder: a. /Support/Screenshots/iOS/iPhone 3 3. Click on the iPhone_Navigation.png file to view the screenshot How the files on the DVDs are arranged On the DVDs, the course videos/files are placed in folders that represent their chapter number: The root of DVD #1 for Course 170 The course starts with Chapter01 – so, if you want to watch the course from the very beginning, go ahead and enter the “Chapter01” folder. Inside the Chapter01 folder, you will see two folders: Inside the "Chapter01" folder The “Chapter videos” folder is where you start so go ahead and enter the “Chapter videos” folder: 4 The videos inside the "Chapter videos" folder The files are arranged so that you can sort by file name to order them by viewing order. In the above example, you would watch them in the following order: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 170_Ch01_01_Intro.avi 170_Ch01_02_HowToUse.avi 170_Ch01_03_HowArranged.avi 170_Ch01_04_Exercises.avi 170_Ch01_05_Versions.avi 170_Ch01_06_ProDev.avi If, for example, you wanted to watch the entire course from start to finish (just like you would in a classroom), you would watch them “back to back” (i.e. watch video #1, then video #2, then #3, and so forth). After you finished video #6, you would navigate to the Chapter02 folder and begin by watching video #1 in Chapter02, etc. Location of the course files The course files (exercise instructions, code files, sample databases, report files, PDFs, etc) are located in each chapter folder under a subfolder titled “Chapter files”: Inside the “/Chapter05/Course files/” folder How to watch specific videos in the course 5 In the root of the DVD is a file titled Course-Videos-.PDF (such as Course-Videos-170.pdf for Course 170). If you open this file with your PDF viewer of choice, you will see every video in the course. To locate a specific video, follow these steps: 1. Locate the title of the video you want a. You can search the PDF for keywords b. Or you can visit the LearnItFirst.com website and search for videos matching your search terms 2. Note which chapter this video belongs to 3. Note the video number 4. Use this to navigate to the proper chapter folder and “Course videos” folder a. Note: some courses will be split across two DVDs so you may need to look on both DVDs to locate the chapter folder In this example, you would browse to the "Chapter11" folder on the DVD, then to the "Course videos" folder, and locate the video with _04_ in the title (or sort by name and select the fourth video) How to view the course: Desktop/laptop computers The high-level overview of how to play our courses on your desktop or laptop computer is as follows:   You can play the videos directly from the ORANGE DVDs ... or you can copy the DVD files to your local machine and play them from this new location All other things being equal, there will not be a quality difference between the two methods so pick whichever is easiest for you. Please note that some of the courses are larger than 6GB in size. If you do plan on copying these files to your local machine, just make sure you select a drive that has enough free space. 6 System Requirements To watch our courses, you’ll need two things: the correct codec/driver installed and a video player. Your OS already has a video player installed (or you can choose from these alternative video players) so really the only thing we need to do is to install the codec. Codec/Driver Installation LearnItFirst’s videos require a specific codec to be installed on your machine prior to viewing. A codec is simply a software algorithm for compressing and decompressing data. After our videos are recorded, we compress them so that they can be more easily downloaded. To play the videos on your computer, you must install the same codec so that your machine can decompress the data into a full-resolution video. The codec must only be installed once on your machine. To install the codec, just follow the set of instructions below that match your operating system: For Microsoft-based PCs:  Install the TSCC codec (included on the DVD in the /Support/Codecs/ folder but also available from http://download2.techsmith.com/tscc/TSCC.exe) For Apple Mac-based computers:  Install the EnSharpen codec (included on the DVD in the /Support/Codecs/ folder but also available from http://www.techsmith.com/download.html) Once the codec is installed, click the video to launch in the default video player. Does it look and sound right? Then you have successfully installed the codec and you may skip to the next! If it doesn’t look right, or you hear no sound, or you receive an error, then it’s likely that your installation was unsuccessful or you may have another problem. Please refer to our Troubleshooting and Support section for help. How to watch the videos Now that you have the codec installed, you can simply navigate to the video you want and watch it with your favorite media/video player. For Microsoft-based PCs:   Insert the ORANGE DVD Navigate to the video you want to watch and double-click it to watch it in your favorite video player 7  If you would like to watch it in a non-default video player, launch that video player first, and then use the video player’s File -> Open menu to navigate to the video For Apple Mac-based computers:    Insert the ORANGE DVD Navigate to the video you want to watch and click it to watch it in your default video player If you would like to watch it in a non-default video player, launch that video player first, and then use the video player’s File -> Open menu to navigate to the video “Can I use another other than QuickTime or Windows Media Player?” Absolutely! Microsoft ships with Windows Media Player and Apple ships with their QuickTime player installed. Both typically work great for watching our videos however, from time to time, we do get reports from users about bugs or glitches. If you think there’s a problem with your video player, we have a few suggested alternative video players that you might want to look over. Helpful Hints Target Screen Resolution/Size LearnItFirst’s videos are recorded using a 1024x768 screen resolution. The videos will look sharpest if the playback environment is set to the same resolution. So, if you want the very best results, view the video in fullscreen at 1024x768. How to watch the videos: Mobile devices There are a countless number of devices on which you can watch mobile videos from LearnItFirst.com. This guide will help you with three things:   Step 1: How to quickly load the videos onto your device Step 2: How to view the videos 8  Troubleshooting If you get stuck or have trouble, we can be reached at for support and guidance at [email protected] About the videos The videos are in .m4v format, which is compatible with iOS, Amazon, Microsoft, Android, Samsung, HP, and Blackberry devices (and more!). Please consult your device documentation if you are unsure whether it is compatible with .m4v videos. Please refer to the section below for specifics on working with iOS, Blackberry, Amazon, and Android devices. Skip to the section below that represents the device type you are loading... Apple iOS users (iPhone/iPad/iPod/iTouch)... Please follow these instructions for loading and viewing videos on your Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod, and iTouch. We have tested these instructions with iPhone 3G3 through iPhone 5, iPad 2 and iPad 3, and iOS versions 4.0 – 6.0. There are, unfortunately, a few “known issues” with iOS devices and .m4v videos. If you have trouble (or find something that is “odd”) after you have followed the instructions on loading the videos and viewing the videos, please refer back to this document and view the “Troubleshooting” section at the end. Step 1: How to load the videos onto your iOS device: As with music and other movies, you will use iTunes as your primary interface for loading your iOS device. Please refer to instructions below for the version of iTunes you have installed. NOTE: you will follow these steps for all iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iTouch, etc).   How do I learn which version of iTunes I have installed? If you do run into a bug or glitch, your options are to either troubleshoot the problem or to switch video players. Each video player seems to have its own “known issues” so switching video players is often an immediate and permanent “fix”. The next section contains a few alternate video players. Here are a few common issues that we can help with: 1) "I can hear audio but I do not see any video" - the most likely error is that the proper codec is either not installed or it is not working properly. Reinstall the codec (see instructions above) and launch the video again. 2) "The video looks blurry or 'not good'" - this is likely due to the default settings of Windows Media Player. Follow the instructions http://www.learnitfirst.com/Troubleshooting.aspx to sharpen the video playback. 3) "The video is choppy" - Many times this is resolved by reinstalling the codec for your operating system. If this does not resolve your issue, the best option, many times, is to change the media/video player. See the last section on this page for suggested alternatives to Windows Media Player and Quicktime. 4) "I am trying to play the videos in Quicktime and am experiencing bad quality" - there are known issues with several versions of Quicktime and how it uses the TSCC and Ensharpen codecs. If you are using Quicktime, you might notice:     The absence of audio Audio with a jitter, frequent drops, or pops The absence of video Video with artifacts or a black tint 14 These issues are most obvious is the newest versions of Quicktime and Quicktime X. Quicktime 7 should play the videos correctly with minor video artifacts. If you are experiencing any of these problems, we suggest that you try a new video player. See the last section on this page for suggested alternatives to QuickTime. Alternative Media/Video Players VLC Media Player is a free media player and has been tested by our team. We suggest it as a great free alternative to both Windows Media Player and QuickTime. We have included it on the DVDs in the /Support/Alternate Video Players/ folder. You can also download it here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html NOTE: The TSCC codec (PC) or Ensharpen codec (MAC) are still needed for the videos to play correctly. Camtasia Player will often work when other video players will not. Camtasia Player is included on the DVD in the /Support/Alternate Video Players/Camtasia Player/ folder. Double-click on CamPlay.exe to launch and then File->Open to navigate to your video files. Troubleshooting – Mobile Devices iOS Devices – Known Issues Our mobile videos have been tested on iOS 4, 5, and 6 and work great on all three OS versions. 1. Chapter title bug: There is a known issue with iOS 5 and the video titles not displaying correctly, and instead displaying “Chapter 1,” “Chapter 2,” “Chapter 3,” etc. This is easily corrected by upgrading to iOS 6. 2. Large file error: There is a known issue with adding large movie files to your device. You may get an error that says "There were ‘x’ item(s) that were not able to be added. Please see iTunes for details." The simple fix for this is to restart your device by following these steps: 1. Hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. 2. Once the device is turned off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. 3. Once the device is running again, add the video file again in iTunes to successfully get the video on your device. 15 How to Navigate to the Support Files Included on Your DVDs On your Windows Desktop/laptop: 1.
