Several key revisions were implemented since SAE J306 was first issued in 1991: • Additional new viscosity grades to seize the balance between fuel economy vs. longevity of equipment • Stay-in-grade viscosity requirement applied to oils after severe mechanical shear test, CEC L-45-A-99 (KRL Test, 20 hours), to ensure optimal protection throughout the lifespan of the hardware 4 These changes were implemented to characterize modern lubricant performance for the most current gear design and metallurgy development, adapt to the increasingly stringent OEM fuel economy and CO2 emission requirements, and counter increasingly harsher mechanical environment of modern gears. The new demands pose challenges to lubricant formulation developers, but also present opportunities to improve product robustness and differentiate from competition. Evonik VISCOPLEX® PAMA gear oil VI improver products and our technical experts are dedicated to designing modern gear oil formulations with optimum performance to support our customers. Our VISCOPLEX® gear oil VI improvers offer outstanding performance in thickening efficiency, shear stability and low temperature fluidity with excellent filterability and oxidation stability. Combined with premium DI packages, it helps formulators to design cost-efficient, highly robust multigrade gear oils with broad operating temperature windows for transmissions, transfer cases and differentials. Flexibility in base oil selection is highly desirable in designing lubricant formulation, in order to achieve greater adaptability to supply variation and to establish favorable formulation economics. The proper choice of base oils, however, also dictates viscometric performance of multigrade gear oils, 6 particularly in meeting low temperature standards. Proper selection of a VI improver is essential to accomplish all of these requirements. For example, VISCOPLEX® 0-050 is a robust PAMA VI improver that is capable of satisfying the stringent SAE 75W-90 viscometric demands even in the mostly Group I based formulation. Various SAE J306 viscosity grades of gear oils involve different formulation strategies and may call for different VI improvers. With careful design of VI improver composition, it is possible to develop a single product to fulfill SAE J306 specifications of various viscosity grades. VISCOPLEX® 0-050 demonstrates such versatility by combining appropriate base oils and the use of pour point depressant (PPD) to exceed the requirements in SAE 75W-90, 75W-85, 75W-80 and 80W-140 gear oils. Evonik gear oil VI Improver products enhance gear operating efficiency In addition to excellent viscometric control and formulation flexibility, VISCOPLEX® PAMA VI improvers provide an extra benefit of enhancing transmission efficiency, according to FZG efficiency test (VW PV1456). When comparing with monograde gear oil, the use of PAMAbased multigrade formulations deliver significantly less torque loss over test temperature range, consequently improving gear operating efficiency. These conditions have led to higher operating temperatures inside the gearbox, resulting in higher rate of oxidation, higher wear, shorter oil life and poorer fuel economy. One of the most efficient and rapid tools to predict the operating temperature in gear lubricants is the Axial Groove Ball Bearing test (ARKL, stands for Achsial-Rillen-KugelLager). It was found to correlate well with the vehicle chassis dynamometer test. Our extensive research using the ARKL test demonstrates that multigrade gear oils containing PAMA VI improver can reduce operating temperature considerably compared to monograde oils and multigrade formulations with PIB. The test results from ARKL and FZG efficiency tests clearly demonstrate the benefit of our PAMA VI improver in offering gear efficiency improvement, oil lifespan extension and adequate equipment protection.
