Looking Back Two groups of pioneers who lived thousands of years apart looked the Oswego area over and decided to make it their home. The area’s first residents didn’t stay in one place for long, but their distant decendants did, eventually creating villages on the site of what is now the Village of Oswego. The remains of one such village, dating back nearly 1,000 years are on exhibit at the Little White School Museum. The second great wave of Oswego settlement took place starting in the early 1830’s. In the Fall of 1832, John, Walter and Daniel Pearce and their brother in-law, William Smith Wilson, arrived along the banks of the Fox River, impressed by the areas possiblilities. The quartet had walked West from the homes along the Mad River near present-day Dayton, Ohio, prospecting for good cheap land. Slowly working their way up the Fox River from Ottawa, they stood on the bluff overlooking the river and the mouth of Waubonsee Creek and decided they had found their new home. After a month’s hard journey, the extended Pearce family arrived and staked their claims. Daniel and Sarah Pearce staked their claim along the Waubonsee Creek where it today crosses U.S Route 34 at Fox Bend Golf Course. The home located on the site of their first cabin was built in 1873 after their first pioneer home burned to the grounda suriving, concrete reminder of the village’s settlement. William Wilson and his wife, Rebecca Pearce Wilson, drove their claim stakes on a rise overlooking Waubonsee Creek just upstream from it’s mouth on the Fox River. Today their claim is covered by much of downtown Oswego and the busy “five corners” intersection of IL. Route 25, U.S. Route 34 and Jefferson Street. Lewis B. Judson arrived in 1834 and bought out the claims of many of the earliest arrivals, amassing many hundreds of acres of land, including the site of Oswego. In 1835, Judson and business man Levi F. Arnold, laid out a new village north of Waubonsee Creek on Wilson’s old claim and named it Hudson. Two years later, after being granted a post office (given the name Lodi by the U.S. Post Office), eligible voters -male property owners- decided to rename the town Oswego,
Looking Back the name that it has carried ever since. The village’s first unofficial, name is commermorated today by Hudson Crossing Park along the Fox River. Why name the village Oswego? Judson and many of the early settlers were natives of New York State and like other settlers up and down the Fox Valley named their new town after one of the long-established towns in that state. As it turned out, the name was fitting. Oswego is a Mohawk Indian word meaning “mouth of the stream,” which describes Oswego well, given the mouth of the Waubonsee Creek on the Fox River is situated within the village limits. During the next 175 years, Oswego continued to grow. It served a stint from 1845-1864 as the Kendall County seat, saw the first bridge built across the river in 1848, was disappointed when the main line of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad bypassed the village by a couple miles to the west, regained its happiness when its own rail line was built through town in 1870 and welcomed the tracks of the interurban trolley in 1900. After World War II, Oswego began to boom along with the rest of the nation fueled by home loans to returning military personnel under the G.I. Bill and a surge in local industrial construction. The Caterpillar, Inc. plant in Oswego Township was completed in 1959, joining the Western Electric Plant opened by the manufacturing arm of AT&T in the northeastern corner of the township. Those first industries were joined by more in the 19080’s as the Stonehill Industrial Park and the Kendall Point Business Park opened in Oswego. Population growth was steady until the early 1990’s when it surged once again, driven by the economic growth along the U.S Route 34 corridor. Today the highway is lined with shopping centers catering to the influx of new residents who have arrived, driving the population from about 4,000 in 1990 to more than 33,000 today. From a small village serving farmers to a growing suburban municipality, Oswego and its residents have experienced 178 years of rich history and now look forward to new opportunities in the 21st Century.
