Overview The new VN-DECODER-2, a 2-channel video decoder designed for use in conjunction with Vicon’s VMDC, provides added flexibility for ViconNet system topology. The device provides a cost-effective means to support remote or add-on viewing stations that require only live video display, such as the view of building entrances from a reception desk. Each VN-DECODER-2 supports up to two monitors, each with the ability to display up to 64 video streams on each monitor (see chart on following page). When used at an edge location, such as a public view monitor or a guard shack, the video can be controlled and driven by a programmable logic controller (PLC) and IP keypad, without the need for a traditional keyboard, mouse and monitor. The VN-DECODER-2 provides superior processing power and image quality than the KRX-3 for the same price.

Installation and Configuration The VN-DECODER-2 must be connected to a VMDC in order to direct specific video streams to the device for decoding and display. Remote management and control of the device allows for the decoder to be located where the monitors are, while allowing the location of cameras, switches and the control center to reside at a different site or sites. The VN-DECODER-2 offers both a DVI and HDMI output; an adapter allows the DVI output to connect to a VGA monitor input.

General Performance The following chart displays the approximate number of cameras the VN-DECODER 2 can support, based upon the decoding frame rate, the cameras’ resolutions, compression formats and other system parameters, including whether it is using only Vicon cameras or open platform models. These numbers will vary depending on the specifics of each system.
