Volkswagen Touareg: Access Start Authorization Page 1 / 25 94 - 10 Access Start Authorization Caution! When disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminals, observe all applicable Notes and torque specifications, as well as instructions on performing OBD program and electrical system function checks as specified in this Repair Manual. 27-4, Battery, disconnecting and reconnecting . Not adhering to proper disconnection sequence will result in deactivation of Main Battery Switch -E74- and subsequent damage to electrical system components. General information The Access/Start Authorization Switch E415 (ignition/starter switch) has electronic terminal control. The Anti-Theft Immobilizer Reading Module D1 and Ignition Switch Key Lock Solenoid N376 are integrated with Access/Start Authorization Switch E415 and cannot be serviced separately. Any malfunctions related to E415 operation are output via the Access/Start Control Module J518 On Board Diagnostic (OBD) program. The ignition key removal lock is released electromagnetically. The ignition key cannot be removed as long as the ignition is switched on and, for vehicles with automatic transmissions, the gear selector lever is not in the "P" position. The ignition key removal lock ensures that the ignition key is secure against being inadvertently pulled out. Ignition key removal lock function can be checked using Access/Start Control Module J518 On Board Diagnostic (OBD) program, "Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)" 94-10, Access/Start Control Module J518 , performing Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) . Note: „ Access/Start Authorization Switch E415 is integrated with the lock cylinder and cannot be serviced separately. In the event E415 malfunctions, replace complete unit. „ In the event that Access/Start Control Module J518 requires replacement 94-10, Access/Start Control Access Start Authorization Module J518 , replacing Before troubleshooting or servicing, technicians must be familiar with the functions and operation specifics of the start/access authorization system. Always read the owners manual and review applicable system functions. Note: „ Additional information: Owners Manual Self Study Program - Course Number 89E303 "The Touareg" Self Study Program - Course Number 89J303 "The Touareg Electrical System Design and Function" Wiring Diagrams Component Locations On Board Diagnostic (OBD), function The Access/Start Control Module J518 is controlled by an internal microprocessor with On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capability. If malfunctions occur in monitored components, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) will be stored in memory. Troubleshoot Access/Start Authorization system malfunctions by performing OBD program using VAS 5051/5052 Tester in operating mode "Guided Fault Finding" . Ignition key, emergency release If the power supply in the vehicle has been interrupted or the battery goes dead, the ignition key can be removed by operating a mechanical emergency release. - Turn ignition key to "OFF" position.
