MULTI-CHANNEL ACOUSTIC CALIBRATION SYSTEM The Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system (MCACC) is an automatic sound field adjustment system created by Pioneer experts in co-operation with AIR Studios professional sound engineers. MCACC works just like a professional sound stage right in your living room, but on a smaller scale. The beauty of this automatic adjustment system is that you are able to fine-tune your home system just like a sound professional, but with minimum effort. Using a microphone (included) that plugs into the amplifier, the MCACC system monitors your sound environment and measures the acoustics in the room. It then automatically adjusts various sound parameters on each channel to neutralise characteristics that tarnish the original sound. MCACC on-screen display Automatic Surround Set-up It has never been easier to set up your system, and at the same time, recreate the perfect listening environment. MCACC works by using the included microphone and a series of test tones to measure room acoustics. To start, the microphone checks and tests ambient noise and speaker levels. The system automatically confirms speaker presence and type/size of speaker, and creates a sound stage by equalising the distances between speakers relative to the listener, neutralising differences in sound pressure level, and compensating for timbre variations. Following this surround analysis, the MCACC checks and adjusts the speaker distance (channel delay) and channel level. The amplifier emits a series of timing pulses and frequency sweeps that are read by the microphone and sent to a 9-band digital equaliser for final calibration of up to seven channels. There are two automatic settings that can be selected depending on your needs: All Channel and Front Align. In All Channel mode (flat curve), each speaker is set individually. This setting more closely represents the source material. The Front Align mode (front speaker curve) adjusts all speakers to match in timbre as closely as possible with the main front left and right speakers. You can also manually set each speaker’s frequency balance and memorise it into two user memories – ‘Custom 1’ and ‘Custom 2’. This special DVD-Video disc contains two types of signals in DTS format: one for fine speaker distance adjustment and one for fine speaker angle adjustment. With fine speaker distance adjustment, you can set all your speakers’ distance to an accuracy of less than 1 cm by moving the speakers in turn so that the test tones emanate from precisely between them. The fine speaker angle adjustment uses a voice moving around the listening position in 30-degree steps – like the hours on a clock face – so the speaker angle can be adjusted to the ideal direction that the sound designer aimed for (ITU-R speaker setting standard used for multichannel music monitoring). In addition to THX Cinema and THX Surround EX, THX Ultra2 technology includes two new modes featuring THX ASA (Advanced Speaker Array). THX Ultra2 Cinema allows non-Surround EX-encoded, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 material to be played on a seven-speaker configuration. The idea was to create a new channel for the rear of the cinema auditorium with the same matrix technology of Dolby Pro Logic. The technology was first introduced to the cinemas and soon after adapted to home application. Surround EX is compatible with existing Dolby Digital 5.1 so that a Dolby Digital decoder can decode signals of Surround EX as normal 5.1 signals. FL FC FR SW SL SR SB SB Surround EX DTS NEO:6 SURROUND This mode applies conventional 2-channel signals to the high precision digital matrix decoder used for DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 to achieve 6.1-channel surround playback. High precision input signal detection and matrix processing enable full band reproduction (frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz or greater) for all 6.1 channels, and separation between the different channels is improved to the same level as that of a digital discrete system. DTS-ES DECODING DTS Extended Surround, better known as DTS-ES, has developed another home format in addition to DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 – DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 – for true 3-dimensional surround sound. This format takes advantage of the larger DTS bandwidth to create a subtle centre back channel that restores the original cinematic left surround and right surround channels independently. Moreover, each channel is encoded and decoded individually, enhancing channel separation. The VSA-AX10i-S features a DTS-ES decoder that will allow you to play back discrete 6.1-channel content from DVDs. You will also welcome full compatibility with any DTS-ES or 5.1-channel recording. DTS 96/24 DECODING Heir to the VSA-AX10’s world-first 96 kHz/24-bit decoder, the VSA-AX10i-S reproduces high-quality sound, exactly as recorded on 96 kHz, 24-bit master tapes in the studio. The latest audio format by DTS – the multi-platform DTS 96/24 – was the first compressed surround format technology to support 96 kHz and 24-bit sound resolution and multi-channel capabilities. With its super low audio compression rate, all your discs with DTS-encoded audio soundtracks will sound rich and sophisticated.
