SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 3 RECOMMENDED DSE PROCEDURE ★ Make sure both grids are properly attached to the unit and Temperature Selector is in OFF position before cord is plugged into a standard household outlet. ★ This is a 1200 watt appliance. To avoid a circuit overload, an other high wattage appliance should not be operated on the same circuit. ★ Before removing grids to reverse or wash them, make sure the unit is cool and cord is unplugged from electrical outlet. ★ Avoid spilling or dropping solids or liquids inside the unit when grids are removed. ★ Avoid touching hot metal surfaces of the appliance during or following its use. ★ The grids of this appliance are not suitable for placing in a self cleaning oven for cleaning. ★ When first used, the unit may smoke slightly. This will stop after it has been used a few times. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NON-STICK COATING (M odel G44T) The non-stick coating on each side of the grids minimizes sticking of food and provides easy cleaning. Some appearance changes in the coating can be expected during use, however, these will not appreciably affect performance. Metal utensils may be used dur ing grilling, however, exercise care to minimize scratching into the coating and do not cut foods on the grids using a knife. Nylon utensils may be preferred for turning and removing foods. Staining of the non-stick coating may eventually cause some sticking of foods. Refer to “ How to Clean” section for both routine cleaning directions and special cleaning procedures for the non-stick coating. 4 HOW TO REMOVE OR REVERSE GRIDS The grids are designed with a waffle-patterned surface on one side and a flat grilling surface on the other side. 1. Before removing grid, make sure the unit is unplugged from electrical outlet and the grid is at room temperature. Open unit to open grilling position by lifting top section upward until the hinged stops are cleared, then lower section (A). 2. Press downward on metal clip at back of one grid section (B) until clip clears edge of grid. Lift back of grid (next to hinges) slightly upward, then toward the hinge to release metal tab on underside of grid from slot along front chrome edge. Turn grid over for use of reverse side. 3. To replace grid, hold it slightly forward of the front edge of unit. The metal tab on underside of grid should be slipped into slot from the outside of chrome exterior (C). With tab inserted, align grid, making sure it is completely lowered against edges of unit. Lift metal clip up and over edge of grid to lock it in place. 4. Reverse other grid by the same procedure. 5 HOW TO OIL GRIDS BEFORE OIKIRG WIFFLES Before using for the first time, be sure to wash and thoroughly dry the grids with the unit opened flat, treat the grids as follows: A. Metal Grids: Place grids in waffle baker with waffle sides up. Pour V4 tea spoon salad oil or melted unsalted shortening into each of the four sections of each grid. Thoroughly brush oil onto all grid surfaces. Close waffle baker. Plug cord into a standard household wall outlet. Slide Tempera ture Control to MED. Heat until Signal Light goes out. Slide Temperature Control to OFF. Open waffle baker. Cool to room temperature. Wipe off any ex cess oil with paper towels. This treatment is necessary before first use and after severe scrubbing. However, it does serve as a protective measure if done prior to each use. B. Non-Stick Coated Grids: Lightly grease the non-stick coating on the waffle side of grids, using oil or melted shortening. The oil seals the pores in the surface so food will not stick. Heavy greasing will cause the first foods prepared to absorb the excess grease. This light greasing procedure should be followed after washing the grids with detergent or using reverse side of the grids as these procedures remove the protective coating of oil. HOW TO USE FOR WAFFLE BAKING 1. Make sure grids are positioned with waffle side upward and you have lightly greased the grids as described in the previous sec tion. Light greasing is important even if your grids have the non stick coating. 6 2. Plug cord into a standard wall outlet. Close unit and preheat at MED setting. (Approximately 8 minutes.) The unit is preheated when the signal light goes out. 3. Prepare your favorite waffle recipe or use a packaged mix. 4. When signal light goes out, open unit and pour one cup of bat ter from end to end along center of lower grid. Quickly close unit. 5. After a minute or two, the signal light will glow. When the light goes out again, the waffle is baked (about 5 minutes). Never open unit before signal light goes out as this may cause stick ing and improper baking of the waffle. Open unit and gently lift out waffle. Immediately pour batter on lower grid for next waffle. 6. Due to differences in personal preference, you may wish to use a sljghtly darker or lighter setting to achieve the brownness desired. 7. When all waffles are baked, slide Temperature Selector to OFF and unplug cord from outlet. Cool with unit open to prevent any food particles and grease from burning on grids. Then remove grids and wash them. HOW TO USE FOR GRILLING 1. Position grids with smooth side upward. (NOTE: If your Grill and Waffle Baker has non-stick grids, follow this procedure before each use for grilling. Lightly brush oil or melted shortening over the grids to seal the pores in the grid surface so foods will not stick. After this first greasing, foods may be prepared without additional oil or grease during each complete cooking period. However, you may prefer to use some butter, margarine, oil, etc. to improve browning and enhance food flavor.) 2. When grilling foods which contain fat, place a small container, such as a custard cup, under the grease spouts at the corner 7 of grids. Melted grease will be channelled into the groove around the edge of grids and will drain into the container. 3. OPEN GRILLING — Open grill flat (See A). Plug cord into outlet and preheat at setting indicated in Grilling Guide. Food may be cooked on either or both grid surfaces, but if using only one, it is recommended that you use the grid nearest the control. 4. CLOSED GRILLING — Close unit and plug cord into outlet. Preheat at setting indicated in Grilling Guide until signal light goes out. Place food on lower grid, then close unit to cook both sides of food at once. 5. Use the LIGHT setting of the Temperature Selector with the unit in Open Grilling position for keeping foods warm before or dur ing serving. 6. When finished grilling, slide Temperature Selector to OFF and unplug cord from outlet. Cool with unit open, then remove grids for washing. HOW 10 CIRE FOR GRILL «HR W1FFLE HIKER Routine Care: It is important to thoroughly wash the grids after waffle baking or grilling to prevent a build-up of residue. This residue on the non stick grids may not be evident to the eye, but if not removed, will cause staining and/or sticking when the unit is next used. 1. When grids are cool and the unit is unplugged from electrical outlet, remove grids from unit and wash in fresh, hot, sudsy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry before replacing grids in unit. If soaking fails to remove stubborn spots, clean as follows: a. Non-Stick coated grids — scrub only with a non-abrasive plastic bristle brush or mesh or nylon net scouring pad. These grids may be washed in a dishwasher. Exercise care 8 when positioning them in a dishwasher to avoid scrapes and chips from contact with other dishes during washing. b. Metal grids — scrub with a stiff brush. These grids are sili cone treated and should not be washed in a dishwasher as such would remove the silicone and cause discoloration of the aluminum. 2. Before using grids again after they have been washed, refer to previous sections discussing procedures for oiling before pre paring waffles or using the unit for grilling. 3. Wipe handles, Temperature Selector area and exterior of unit with a soft, damp cloth, then polish with a soft, dry cloth. Re move stubborn spots from chrome using a mild, liquid house hold cleaner or chrome cleaner, then polish. Clean unit after each use to prevent grease from burning on the chrome. Special Cleaning for Non-Stick Grids The grids will darken after continued use. Since severe staining will affect non-stick characteristics of the cooking surfaces, you may wish to clean the grids periodically using a commercial cleaner specifically formulated for non-stick surfaces. Such clean ers may be purchased in most grocery, hardware or department stores. Do not use a household bleach to clean the grids as it will affect the appearance and will not properly clean the surface. Use a large container (avoid aluminum container) or the kitchen sink (porcelain or stainless steel) to immerse and soak grids in the non-stick cleaning solution. Follow instructions on container of non-stick cleaner for recommended proportion of cleaner and water. Boil enough water so grids will be immersed in solution. Pour boiling water into container or sink, add cleaner and stir until dissolved. Immerse grids in solution and soak 30 minutes. Wash grids thoroughly in fresh, hot, sudsy water, rinse and dry. 9 GRILLING GUIDE The cooking temperatures and times indicated are approximate and may require some adjustment depending on food size, quan tity, temperature and personal taste. When grease or fat is sug gested, you may use butter, margarine, oil, shortening, drippings, etc., depending on personal taste. OPEN 6RILLIN6: Open grill flat and preheat unless otherwise indicated. Place food on both grids. If only one grid is needed, use grid section with Temperature Selector. Turn food as needed. Use grill for open grilling to prepare a quantity of food at once and for keeping food warm during serving. CLOSED GRILLIN6: Unless otherwise indicated, preheat closed grill. Open grill and place food on lower grid, then close grill. Use grill for closed grill ing of meat, sandwiches, etc., when preparing small quantities, for some faster cooking of both sides of food at once, and to minimize spatter.
