8 Choosing alerting products WAKE UP! Alerting Choosing alerting products 9 systems, depending on whether you need 24-hour or night-time coverage. All our systems provide night-time coverage using a powerful under-pillow pad that vibrates to wake you in the event of a fire. • For portable 24-hour coverage we have the Bellman paging system. You can carry the receiver around with you and be alerted wherever you are. • If you only want night-time coverage, when you might not have your hearing aids in, then our smoke alarm is the most cost-effective option. It comes with a vibrating pad that goes under your pillow. All our alerting devices use amplified sounds, flashing lights or vibration to alert you. Doorbells Some plug in to sockets, while others are battery-powered portable units that you carry around with you, so you can be alerted anywhere in the house or garden. When someone presses the doorbell, it activates a chime and/or a flashing light on either the plug-in or portable receiver to attract your attention. Baby monitors These are portable, so you can be alerted to your baby waking or crying whether you are in the house or garden. We have baby alarm packs that can also be used as part of our paging systems. Alarm clocks Our alarm clocks are louder than standard ones, but they also have vibrating pads that you slip under your pillow to wake you up. Some have bright flashing lights, too. Telephone ringers We have several products that will let you know when your telephone is ringing. Some connect to your telephone socket using a doubler, while others have a microphone that can attach to the telephone ringer. You can increase the volume of your telephone ringer and there are also options to add a vibrating pad so you can be alerted at night. Wristwatch alarms These watches vibrate at your chosen time, so you can’t miss the alert. Some people like to wear the watches in bed and use them as alarm clocks, because the vibration is less likely to wake their partner. Smoke alarms We have smoke alarms that have been designed specifically for people with hearing loss. We have wired or wireless With the smoke alarm and paging systems, we have different detector options to choose from, depending on what you want to be alerted to. • Ionisation detectors are particularly sensitive to free-burning fires, like chip pan fires. They detect these fires before the smoke becomes thick. • Optical detectors are effective at detecting slowburning fires, like overheated electrical wiring, and are less likely to go off accidentally while cooking. • Heat detectors detect heat, rather than smoke. They are normally used as an add-on to an existing system. Paging systems Instead of buying separate alerting devices (and carrying several receivers around) you can buy one integrated system that alerts you to everything on one handy, wireless device. Simply choose the transmitters you want together with a receiver.
