How to brush your pet’s teeth

Drinking water additive is an easy way to support your pet’s oral care routine...
Gradually follow these steps to brushing your pet’s teeth. Be patient and take your time – some pets may need a day or two at each step.
l Fights plaque and bacteria. l An easy aid to maintain dental health in your pet.
Gently stroke the outside of your pet’s cheeks, with just your fingers (no brush), for about 30 seconds, then slowly lift the top lip to see the teeth. STEP

Repeat as above and also place a small amount of toothpaste on the end of your finger and let your pet taste it.
Lift the top lip, then gently run your finger or finger toothbrush with a small amount of toothpaste over your pet’s teeth for about 30-45 seconds. STEP

Repeat Step 3, extending the time by about 15 seconds.
When your pet is happy with the teeth being rubbed with a finger or finger toothbrush for a minute, start to use a toothbrush for about 30 seconds. STEP

How often do you brush YOUR teeth?

Repeat as Step 5 and increase the time by 30 seconds. By this time you should be aiming to spend at least one minute on each side of the mouth.
If your pet has behaved well, reward with praise and a treat (a dental chew is ideal) at the end of each session.

l Further build up of plaque allows bacteria to infect below the gum line, leading to periodontal disease. l Periodontal disease (inflammation of the tissues supporting the teeth) is very common in pets with poor dental hygiene.
l Periodontal disease causes pain, tooth loss and can possibly cause serious illness. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream through infected gums which may cause systemic disease. l Dental surgery under general anaesthetic is essential to treat periodontal disease. l All these problems and most dental surgery are easily avoided with proper routine oral care.

Brushing
l Toothbrushing with pet toothpaste is the single most effective method of removing plaque. l Frequent plaque removal will prevent the start of periodontal disease.
